Chapter 16: The Man Who Knew Marcus's Secret

I kept staring at my phone long after the call ended.

Daniel Bennett.

The name from the photograph.

The little boy my mother had held before I was born.

The man Marcus had supposedly been searching for.

"Claire?"" Andrea said gently.

"Are you all right?""

I shook my head.

"He said he knows who really owns Hale Development.""

Andrea immediately reached for her notebook.

"Did he explain anything else?""

"No. He just said we needed to meet.""

Aunt Patricia looked between us.

"I remember your mother mentioning Daniel once. She said he was a brave little boy who deserved a better life.""

I turned toward her.

"Did she ever say why he was separated from his family?""

Aunt Patricia shook her head.

"No. But I remember one thing. Margaret used to receive letters addressed to someone named Daniel. She kept them in a locked drawer.""

"Where?""

"In the old house. Your father might have kept them.""

Andrea checked her phone.

"We need to verify Daniel's identity before arranging anything. Given what's happening with Marcus, we cannot assume this is harmless.""

I nodded.

A few minutes later, Daniel sent another message.

I know you're with Andrea Bennett. I have documents proving who I am. I also have something your mother left for me.

I typed back.

Why has Marcus been looking for you?

His response came immediately.

Because I'm the person who can stop him from selling the company.

Andrea read the message.

"He's making a significant claim.""

"Can we meet him?""

"Yes, but somewhere secure. I'll arrange it.""

The meeting took place that afternoon in a private conference room at a hotel near downtown Savannah.

Daniel arrived carrying a brown leather briefcase.

He was in his late thirties, with dark hair, a close-trimmed beard, and a noticeable scar above his left eyebrow.

The same scar from the photograph.

He stopped when he saw me.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he smiled sadly.

"You look like Margaret.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"You knew my mother?""

"She saved my life.""

He sat across from us.

Andrea introduced herself and explained that the conversation would be documented.

Daniel nodded.

"That's fine. I expected that.""

He opened his briefcase and removed several documents.

The first was a birth certificate.

The second was an adoption record.

The third was a photograph of my mother holding him as a baby.

I looked at the papers.

His birth mother was listed as a woman named Evelyn Bennett.

His biological father was listed as Richard Hale.

I looked up.

"Richard was your father?""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

The room became completely silent.

"Then Marcus...""

"Is my half-brother.""

I stared at him.

Marcus had never mentioned having a brother.

Not once during our three years of marriage.

Daniel continued.

"Richard had a relationship with my mother before he married Eleanor. When she became pregnant, Richard wanted to take responsibility. But his family was already facing a major financial crisis, and the situation became complicated.""

Andrea examined the documents.

"Was the adoption legally completed?""

"Yes. My mother was struggling financially, and Margaret helped arrange for me to be raised by another family. Richard remained involved, but only privately.""

I looked at the photograph.

"Why did my mother help you?""

"Because she believed I deserved a childhood without being used as leverage in a family dispute.""

He removed another letter.

"She sent me birthday cards every year until she died.""

I carefully unfolded it.

Daniel,

You are loved more than you know. Never allow anyone to convince you that your birth makes you less deserving of a family.

One day, you may need to understand why certain people kept your identity private. Until then, build a life that belongs to you.

I pressed the letter against the table.

My mother had protected this man.

She had loved him.

And she had somehow made sure I would one day find him.

"Why is Marcus searching for you?"" I asked.

Daniel leaned back.

"Because Richard never transferred his original controlling shares to Marcus.""

I looked at Andrea.

She immediately opened her laptop.

Daniel continued.

"Richard placed those shares into a protected arrangement. He intended for me to become a trustee when I reached adulthood. I was never supposed to inherit everything personally, but I was supposed to help protect the company.""

"Then why didn't you?""

"Because I didn't know the full arrangement until recently.""

He removed a document from his briefcase.

It was a copy of the original shareholder agreement.

"Marcus discovered my existence about a year ago. He contacted me through an attorney and offered me money to sign away my rights.""

"How much?""

"Two million dollars.""

Andrea looked up.

"Did you accept?""

"No.""

"Why not?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Because the offer came with a condition.""

"What condition?""

"That I acknowledge Marcus as the sole rightful successor and agree not to challenge any future transfer of the company.""

I stared.

"He wanted you to sign away your own rights.""

"Yes.""

Daniel placed another document on the table.

"This is the original shareholder register.""

Andrea examined it.

The names were clearly visible.

Richard Hale.

Thomas Bennett.

Margaret Bennett.

And beneath them was a separate entry.

Daniel Bennett — protected successor.

I felt my pulse quicken.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel answered quietly.

"It means Richard wanted the company protected by all three family branches. Your mother's interest, your father's contribution, and my father's original controlling shares.""

Andrea began comparing the register with the existing trust documents.

Then she stopped.

"Wait.""

She enlarged a paragraph.

"This agreement requires the consent of three parties before a controlling sale can occur.""

Daniel nodded.

"Richard, Margaret, and Thomas established that rule.""

"Who holds the rights now?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Margaret's rights passed to you. Thomas's rights passed through his estate. Richard's controlling rights were placed under the protected successor arrangement.""

Andrea slowly leaned back.

"So the proposed sale cannot legally proceed without Claire's authorization and Daniel's consent.""

"Correct.""

I looked down.

Marcus had been trying to sell something he didn't have the authority to sell.

He had forged my signature because he needed my consent.

And he had been searching for Daniel because he needed Daniel's.

"Can he still complete the sale?"" I asked.

"Not legally," Daniel replied.

"But he might try to conceal the restrictions until the transaction closes.""

Andrea closed her laptop.

"We need to notify Meridian immediately.""

Daniel nodded.

"I have copies of the proposed agreement.""

He removed another document.

Then he looked directly at me.

"There's one more thing.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What?""

"Richard left a separate letter for Amelia.""

I stared.

"My daughter?""

"Yes.""

"Why would he write to her before she was born?""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Because the original agreement anticipated the possibility that the next generation would inherit the company during a family crisis.""

He handed me a sealed envelope.

My daughter's name was written across the front.

To Amelia Hale, when her mother is ready.

I held it carefully.

Then Daniel spoke again.

"Claire, there's something else you need to know about Marcus.""

I looked up.

"What?""

"He contacted me last week. He told me if I didn't sign the agreement, he would make sure I never had a chance to claim my rights.""

"How?""

Daniel hesitated.

"He said he had proof that I was never legally adopted.""

Andrea immediately looked at the adoption records.

Daniel continued.

"And he said he knew where my biological mother was buried.""

I felt a chill.

"Your mother?""

He nodded.

"She died when I was young. But Marcus somehow found a document suggesting she had left behind another child.""

I stared at him.

"Another child?""

May you like

Daniel leaned forward.

"Yes. And according to the document, that child may still be alive.""
