Chapter 12: The Eighteen Million Dollar Deal

The photograph was taken from across the restaurant.

Marcus sat at a corner table, wearing a charcoal suit and the silver watch I had given him on our second anniversary.

Two men sat opposite him.

One was older, with gray hair and a dark leather portfolio.

The other appeared to be in his forties and wore a red tie.

Between them lay a document with the Hale Development logo.

Eleanor studied the photograph.

"That's not a routine business meeting.""

Andrea enlarged it.

"The older man is probably a representative from Meridian Capital Partners.""

I looked at the figure.

"Eighteen million dollars.""

"That may be the proposed sale price," Andrea said.

"Can Marcus sell the company?""

"Not without violating the trust restrictions. But he may be attempting to transfer his interests or enter into an agreement that creates the appearance of a sale.""

Eleanor picked up her phone.

"I'm calling the board.""

Andrea stopped her.

"Before you do, we need to know who sent this photograph and whether the transaction is already underway.""

I looked at the message.

The unknown number was still active.

I typed:

Who are you?

The response came almost immediately.

Someone who worked for your husband.

I stared at the screen.

Why are you helping me?

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Finally, a message arrived.

Because I signed something I shouldn't have.

Andrea leaned closer.

"Ask them to identify themselves.""

I typed:

What is your name?

The answer came back.

Robert Hayes.

I looked at Andrea.

"He's the accountant who spoke to you.""

She nodded.

"Apparently, he's decided to disclose more.""

Another message arrived.

Marcus is meeting Meridian's people tomorrow. He wants to sign before Eleanor can stop him.

Andrea immediately called Robert.

He answered after several rings.

"Andrea?""

"This is Andrea Bennett. I received the photograph you sent to Claire.""

There was a pause.

"Then you know.""

"Tell us exactly what Marcus is planning.""

Robert exhaled.

"He's trying to sell a controlling interest in Hale Development. He's telling Meridian that he has authority to restructure the company.""

"Does he?""

"No.""

Eleanor took the phone.

"Robert, this is Eleanor Hale.""

"Mrs. Hale.""

"How long have you known about this?""

"About three weeks.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Marcus threatened to report me for misconduct. He said I had approved the transfers.""

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"Did you?""

"I signed some accounting entries under pressure. I shouldn't have.""

Andrea interrupted.

"Do you have the original instructions?""

"Yes. I kept copies.""

"Can you provide them?""

"I can.""

"Then send everything to our office.""

Robert hesitated.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

"Marcus has been using the Westlake property as collateral for the proposed deal.""

Eleanor looked at me.

"That's impossible. The property is already connected to the trust restrictions.""

Robert continued.

"He told Meridian that the house was owned outright by Cross Family Holdings.""

Andrea immediately began writing.

"Was that representation accurate?""

"No. There's an outstanding loan against it.""

"Who signed the loan documents?""

Robert hesitated again.

"Marcus.""

"Only Marcus?""

Another pause.

"No. There's a second signature.""

"Whose?""

Robert lowered his voice.

"Claire Hale.""

My blood went cold.

I looked at Andrea.

"I never signed a loan.""

Robert continued.

"The documents contain your electronic signature. The lender's file says you personally guaranteed part of the debt.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"That's another forgery.""

Andrea nodded.

"Preserve everything, Robert. Do not confront Marcus. We will arrange a formal review.""

After the call, Eleanor stood.

"He's using Claire's name to borrow money and selling assets he doesn't own.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"Why would Meridian agree to this?""

"Because Marcus may have misrepresented the ownership structure," Andrea said.

"They may not know about the restrictions.""

"Then tell them.""

"We will. But we need to do it properly.""

I looked at Eleanor.

"What happens if the sale goes through?""

She answered carefully.

"Even if Marcus signs an agreement, the transfer may be challengeable. But it could create serious complications.""

I shook my head.

"He doesn't care.""

"No," Eleanor said quietly.

"I don't believe he does.""

That afternoon, Andrea filed emergency notices with the relevant financial institutions and contacted the trustee.

She also arranged for the forged loan documents to be preserved.

But the situation became more complicated when Marcus's attorney called.

He wanted a meeting.

Not with Eleanor.

Not with Andrea.

With me.

I initially refused.

Then Andrea explained that there might be a strategic reason to hear what he had to say, provided the meeting took place with counsel present and all communication was documented.

The meeting was scheduled for the following morning at Andrea's office.

Marcus arrived twenty minutes late.

He wore a dark blue suit and looked exhausted.

His attorney, a tall man named Gregory Shaw, carried a thick briefcase.

Marcus didn't greet me.

He sat across the table.

"Claire, you look well.""

I stared at him.

"You wanted to see me.""

He nodded.

Gregory opened his briefcase.

"My client would like to discuss a possible settlement.""

Andrea folded her hands.

"Please explain.""

Gregory placed a document on the table.

"Marcus is prepared to offer Claire a substantial financial settlement in exchange for resolving the marital and trust-related disputes.""

I glanced at the first page.

The proposed payment was five hundred thousand dollars.

I looked up.

"That's it?""

Marcus leaned forward.

"It's a generous offer.""

"You used my inheritance to buy a house for Vivian. You forged my signature on loan documents. You tried to remove me from the trust. And now you're offering me five hundred thousand dollars?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Claire, I don't have unlimited money.""

I almost laughed.

"You were negotiating an eighteen-million-dollar sale yesterday.""

His expression changed.

"How do you know about that?""

I said nothing.

Andrea answered.

"That's not relevant to the settlement proposal.""

Gregory cleared his throat.

"My client is also prepared to withdraw the disputed paternity concerns.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Withdraw them?""

Marcus looked at me.

"I don't want to fight about Amelia.""

"You already did.""

"Claire, I made mistakes.""

"Did you forge my signature?""

He looked down.

"I didn't personally prepare every document.""

"That's not what I asked.""

Gregory intervened.

"We're not here to discuss allegations.""

I pushed the settlement paper away.

"Then we're finished.""

Marcus's face hardened.

"You should think carefully before rejecting this.""

"Why?""

"Because the trust investigation could become ugly. People will start asking questions about your father's money, your mother's estate, and everything connected to the family.""

I froze.

"My mother's estate?""

Marcus realized what he had said.

Eleanor wasn't in the room.

But Andrea was.

"What does Claire's mother have to do with this?"" she asked.

Marcus leaned back.

"Nothing.""

"Then why did you mention her estate?""

He looked at Gregory.

His attorney immediately closed the briefcase.

"We're done for today.""

Marcus stood.

I remained seated.

"Wait.""

He stopped.

"How do you know about my mother's estate?""

He stared at me for several seconds.

Then he said quietly:

"Because your mother left something behind that your father never told you about.""

I felt my heartbeat accelerate.

"My mother died when I was twelve.""

"I know.""

"What did she leave?""

Marcus looked toward the door.

"Ask Eleanor.""

Then he walked out.

Andrea remained still for several seconds.

Finally, she turned toward me.

"Claire, did you know your mother had any connection to the Hale family?""

"No.""

"Did your father ever mention an inheritance from her?""

I shook my head.

"Never.""

Andrea opened her laptop and searched through the documents from the original trust.

Then she stopped.

"That's strange.""

"What?""

She turned the screen toward me.

There was a reference to a separate family asset agreement.

The date was two years before my mother died.

And beside the name of the original beneficiary was a line that made my breath catch.

*Margaret Bennett — surviving daughter: Claire Bennett.*

I stared at my mother's maiden name.

Bennett.

The same surname as Andrea.

But before I could ask anything, Andrea looked at me and spoke carefully.

"Claire, I think your mother may have been connected to this family long before your father ever met Richard Hale.""

May you like

Then she opened the next page.

And what I saw there made me question whether I had ever truly known my own family.
