Chapter 11: The Four Million Dollar Lie
By the following morning, the family trust had been placed under emergency review.
Marcus was temporarily restricted from making certain financial decisions involving the protected assets.
But that wasn't enough for me.
I wanted to know where my father's money had gone.
Andrea arrived at Eleanor's house carrying two thick folders and a laptop.
She placed everything on the dining table.
"Claire, we have the preliminary bank records.""
I sat down carefully.
Eleanor poured me a glass of water.
"Take your time, sweetheart.""
Andrea opened the first folder.
"Your original inheritance was held in a savings and investment account. After you married Marcus, you transferred part of it to help his business.""
"I remember.""
"The transfer was recorded as a secured investment, not an unrestricted contribution.""
She placed a statement in front of me.
I recognized the amount.
Two hundred and eighty thousand dollars.
It had been transferred to Hale Development three years earlier.
Marcus had told me the money would help complete a major commercial project.
"What happened to it?""
Andrea turned the page.
"Some of it was used for legitimate company expenses. The rest was transferred through several accounts.""
"How much?""
"Approximately two hundred thousand dollars remains unaccounted for in the records we've reviewed so far.""
I stared at the statement.
"Two hundred thousand?""
Andrea nodded.
"We're still tracing the money.""
Eleanor sat across from me.
"Your father worked very hard to leave you that money.""
"I know.""
I remembered the day he gave me the account information.
He had been sitting in his favorite leather chair, wearing his old gray sweater.
"Claire, this isn't money to impress people," he'd said.
"It's money to make sure you always have choices.""
I'd promised him I would be careful.
Then I had fallen in love with Marcus and believed I could trust him with everything.
I wiped my eyes.
"Find every dollar.""
Andrea nodded.
"There is another issue. The four-million-dollar transfer was not entirely connected to your inheritance. Some of the money came from company funds and some from accounts linked to the family trust.""
"How could Marcus move that much without approval?""
"He couldn't do it directly. That's why he created multiple transactions.""
Eleanor looked furious.
"Richard designed the company to prevent exactly this.""
Andrea opened her laptop.
"There's an additional account we haven't discussed.""
She turned the screen toward us.
It showed a business account registered to Cross Family Holdings.
The account balance was listed at just over four million dollars.
I stared.
"Is that the money he tried to transfer?""
"Partly. But we believe some funds were deposited earlier.""
"How much?""
"Approximately one million dollars was transferred into that account over the last six months.""
Eleanor leaned closer.
"Where did that money come from?""
Andrea opened another document.
"The company records show payments authorized by Marcus.""
I looked at the dates.
They matched the months when Marcus had been telling me business was struggling.
I remembered him refusing to buy a new car because he wanted to save money.
I remembered canceling a weekend trip.
I remembered him telling me that we needed to be responsible before Amelia arrived.
Meanwhile, he had been transferring money to Vivian.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Marcus.
We need to talk alone. I want to fix this.
I showed Eleanor.
She shook her head.
"Don't meet him alone.""
Andrea agreed.
"If you choose to communicate, keep it documented.""
I typed a response.
Anything you have to say can be said through the attorneys.
I sent it.
A few minutes later, Marcus called.
I declined.
Then another message appeared.
Vivian is lying to you. She has been manipulating the entire situation.
I stared at the screen.
It was almost funny.
The man who had spent months lying to me was suddenly desperate to convince me that another liar was worse.
I didn't respond.
Instead, I asked Andrea about the original trust.
"Can Marcus still claim Amelia isn't his daughter?""
"He can make an allegation, but he would need evidence. The trust cannot simply remove her because of an accusation.""
"And the test?""
"We've requested the laboratory records. If the consent was forged, that could become important evidence of misconduct.""
Eleanor reached across the table.
"Claire, I want you to know something. Whatever the outcome, Amelia will never be abandoned.""
I nodded.
But there was another question I couldn't ignore.
"Why did Marcus keep saying he needed the money?""
Andrea looked at the second folder.
"Because he may have been hiding personal debts.""
She opened a credit report obtained through the ongoing investigation.
There were several large loans connected to Marcus.
One was secured against the Westlake property.
Another was connected to a private investment company.
A third had been issued against shares in Hale Development.
Eleanor stared at the figures.
"Richard's company is being used as collateral?""
"Apparently.""
I looked at her.
"Could the company lose everything?""
"Not necessarily," Andrea replied.
"But if the debts aren't resolved, creditors may attempt to enforce their claims.""
Eleanor closed the folder.
"Then we need to know who the lenders are.""
Andrea nodded.
"We've already identified one.""
She turned the laptop toward me.
The lender's name was Meridian Capital Partners.
I recognized it.
Marcus had mentioned the company several times during our marriage.
He said they were potential investors who might help expand Hale Development.
"Who owns it?""
Andrea clicked another page.
The company was registered through a private holding structure.
But one of its directors was listed as Vivian Cross.
I stared.
"She's lending Marcus money too?""
"That's what the records suggest.""
Eleanor shook her head.
"This is more complicated than an affair.""
Andrea nodded.
"There's evidence that Vivian may have been acting as both a recipient of company funds and a creditor.""
I looked at the documents.
"Why would she lend him money if he was already giving her money?""
Andrea paused.
"One possibility is that the transactions were designed to disguise the movement of assets.""
The room went quiet.
Then Eleanor's phone rang.
She answered.
"Yes?""
Her expression changed.
"What do you mean the original share certificates are missing?""
She listened.
"Who had access?""
Another pause.
Then she looked at me.
"Don't allow anyone to leave the office until the records are secured.""
She ended the call.
I stood carefully.
"What happened?""
"Someone entered Richard's old office last night.""
"Who?""
"The office manager says Marcus was there.""
Andrea closed her laptop.
"What was taken?""
Eleanor's voice dropped.
"The original share certificates. The documents establishing Amelia's protected ownership. And a sealed envelope containing the instructions for the family trust.""
I felt cold.
"Can he sell the shares?""
"Not legally without the necessary approvals.""
"But he might try.""
Eleanor nodded.
Andrea gathered the folders.
"We need to move quickly.""
Then my phone rang.
A text appeared from an unknown number.
Marcus isn't trying to save the company.
Another message followed.
He's trying to sell it before the trust investigation is completed.
I looked at Eleanor.
"Who is this?""
Before I could reply, the sender sent a photograph.
It showed Marcus sitting across from two men in a private restaurant.
A document lay on the table between them.
At the top was the name of Hale Development.
