Chapter 2: The Folder His Mother Brought

Eleanor didn't raise her voice.

She didn't need to.

The entire hotel entrance had gone silent.

"Marcus," she said, "step away from Vivian.""

He gave a nervous laugh.

"Mother, you're misunderstanding the situation.""

"Am I?""

"Claire is upset. She's been under a lot of stress because of the pregnancy.""

Eleanor looked at my cheek again.

"Pregnancy doesn't put fingerprints on someone's face.""

Vivian folded her arms.

"With all due respect, Eleanor, you weren't here. You don't know what happened.""

Eleanor took one step toward her.

"And you apparently don't know when to stop talking.""

Marcus moved between them.

"That's enough. We need to discuss this somewhere private.""

"Wonderful," Eleanor replied.

"I've arranged a private room.""

She turned toward me.

"Claire, sweetheart, can you walk?""

I nodded.

"Are you feeling any pain?""

"My stomach tightened when she hit me, but I think the baby is okay.""

Eleanor's expression changed immediately.

"Then we're going to the hospital.""

Marcus shook his head.

"Mother, that's ridiculous. She wasn't hit in the stomach.""

Eleanor looked at him as though she hadn't heard correctly.

"Your pregnant wife has just been assaulted, and you're arguing about whether she deserves medical attention?""

"She's exaggerating.""

I felt something inside me go completely still.

For months, I had tried to find explanations for Marcus's behavior.

His absences. His coldness. His excuses.

But standing there, listening to him dismiss my fear, I finally understood that the man I had married was willing to sacrifice almost anything to protect himself.

Eleanor took my arm.

"Come with me.""

Vivian suddenly stepped forward.

"Marcus, are you going to let her do this?""

He looked torn between the two women.

"Mother, we have business to discuss.""

"Not today.""

"Vivian and I have made plans.""

Eleanor stopped walking.

Slowly, she turned around.

"Vivian and you?""

Marcus swallowed.

"We're together.""

"I see.""

"And Claire and I are getting divorced.""

Eleanor's eyes narrowed.

"While she's seven months pregnant?""

"I have my reasons.""

"Do those reasons include the fact that you have been using company funds to pay for Vivian's apartment?""

Marcus went pale.

Vivian's fingers tightened around her purse.

I looked from one to the other.

"What apartment?""

Nobody answered.

Eleanor opened her leather folder and removed several printed pages.

"Before we discuss that, I want to know why my son told his wife that I requested this meeting.""

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Because I wanted everyone together.""

"No. You wanted witnesses.""

She placed the papers on the counter.

"These are transaction records from Hale Development. Over the past eleven months, substantial payments have been transferred from the company to a consulting firm owned by Vivian Cross.""

Vivian laughed nervously.

"Those are legitimate consulting fees.""

"Then you'll have no difficulty explaining why the company paid the rent on your private penthouse, your vehicle lease, and your personal travel expenses.""

Marcus grabbed the papers.

"Where did you get these?""

"From the company records.""

"Those records are confidential.""

"So is fraud, Marcus. Yet here we are.""

The word landed like a stone.

Fraud.

I had known Marcus's business was struggling.

Two years earlier, his construction company had nearly collapsed after a major commercial project fell through. My father had died leaving me a modest inheritance, and I had used part of it to help Marcus keep the company alive.

He had cried when I signed the documents.

"Claire, I swear I'll spend the rest of my life making this up to you.""

Now I wondered what exactly I had helped him save.

Eleanor turned toward me.

"Did Marcus ever ask you to sign anything related to the company?""

I hesitated.

"Last spring, he brought me some documents. He said they were needed to update our family assets after the pregnancy.""

Marcus immediately interrupted.

"That's irrelevant.""

Eleanor ignored him.

"Did you sign them?""

"Yes.""

"What did he tell you they were?""

"Routine paperwork. He said it would make everything easier for the baby.""

Eleanor closed her eyes briefly.

Then she looked at Marcus.

"What did you put in front of her?""

"Nothing improper.""

"Answer me.""

He stepped closer.

"Mother, you don't understand how complicated the company has become.""

"Then explain it.""

Vivian touched his arm.

"Marcus, don't.""

That tiny movement caught my attention.

She wasn't simply standing beside him anymore.

She was trying to stop him from speaking.

Eleanor noticed it too.

"Interesting," she murmured.

Marcus turned toward her.

"You called this meeting because you wanted to humiliate me.""

"No. I called this meeting because I received information suggesting that company assets were being transferred without authorization.""

She removed another document.

"And because I discovered that someone had attempted to change the beneficiary arrangements connected to the Hale family trust.""

My stomach tightened.

"What beneficiary arrangements?""

Eleanor looked at me.

"Your husband submitted a request to remove you as the primary beneficiary.""

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

"Why?""

Marcus looked away.

Eleanor continued.

"The request also attempted to establish a new family-benefit account.""

Vivian's face lost its color.

I stared at her.

"With your name?""

She said nothing.

Marcus suddenly snatched the document from his mother's hand.

"That's enough!""

A hotel security officer approached.

"Sir, is everything all right?""

Eleanor didn't look away from her son.

"No. But it will be.""

Marcus threw the papers onto the counter.

"You're making a mistake, Mother. Vivian and I are building a future together. Claire and I are finished.""

Eleanor's expression became colder.

"Your personal relationships are your own business. Your financial dishonesty is mine.""

She turned to me.

"Claire, there's something else you need to know.""

I stepped closer.

"What?""

Eleanor hesitated.

For the first time since arriving, she looked genuinely uncertain.

"Your late father-in-law left instructions concerning the family trust. Those instructions become especially important when an heir is expecting a child.""

Marcus immediately stiffened.

"Mother, don't.""

Eleanor opened the folder again.

"The original agreement was never supposed to be changed without the consent of the child's mother.""

I looked at Marcus.

"What agreement?""

Before Eleanor could answer, his phone began vibrating.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

Then he walked several feet away and answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice was faintly audible through the phone.

Marcus listened.

"What do you mean the bank froze it?""

His eyes shifted toward Eleanor.

"No. That's impossible.""

He lowered his voice.

"Who authorized that?""

Eleanor closed her folder.

"I did.""

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

And Vivian, who had been confidently standing beside him only minutes earlier, suddenly whispered something that made my blood run cold.

"Marcus, you promised me the baby wouldn't matter.""

I turned toward her.

"What did you just say?""

She looked at me.

May you like

Then at Marcus.

And for the first time, she seemed to realize she'd said too much.
