Chapter 3: His Mother Came Looking for a Baby—Not a Daughter-in-Law
Patricia Carter arrived at my hospital room wearing a cream designer coat, oversized sunglasses, and the same pearl necklace she had worn to her birthday celebration.
She didn't knock.
She pushed the door open and stepped inside.
“Rebecca, finally.””
I stared at her.
My father stood beside the window.
Major Brooks was near the door.
Patricia barely acknowledged either of them.
She removed her sunglasses and looked around the room.
“Where is the baby?””
Not How are you?
Not Are you recovering?
Not even Thank God you're alive.
Just one question.
Where was the baby?
“In the NICU,” I answered quietly.
Patricia frowned.
“Why?””
“Because she was born prematurely and needed medical attention.””
“Premature?”” She looked offended.
“You're thirty-eight weeks. That's practically full term.””
My father turned around.
“Mrs. Carter, the doctors will determine what is medically appropriate.””
Patricia looked him up and down.
“And you are?””
“Robert Hayes. Rebecca's father.””
“Oh.””
She gave him a dismissive smile.
“I'm Ethan's mother. I'm sure you've heard plenty about me.””
Dad's expression didn't change.
“I have.””
Patricia pulled a chair closer to my bed.
“Now, Rebecca, we need to settle a few things before Ethan arrives.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Settle what?””
She opened her handbag and removed a folder.
“Family matters.””
She placed it on my blanket.
I looked down.
The first page was a hospital authorization form.
The second was a document granting temporary guardianship.
The third appeared to be a consent form allowing Patricia to make medical decisions for Emma.
I stared at the papers.
“What is this?””
Patricia sighed.
“Don't make this difficult.””
“You want me to sign away medical decisions for my daughter?””
“Only temporarily.””
“Why?””
“Because you clearly aren't in a position to make sensible decisions.””
I looked at her.
“I nearly died.””
She shrugged.
“Ethan said you exaggerated everything.””
My father's hand curled into a fist.
Patricia continued as if she hadn't noticed.
“He also said you created a scene at home, called an ambulance unnecessarily, and embarrassed the entire family.””
I felt tears burning behind my eyes.
“Your son left me bleeding on the kitchen floor.””
Patricia waved a hand.
“He had an important commitment.””
“He left me alone while I was in labor.””
“Women give birth every day.””
I looked at her.
“Do you hear yourself?””
She leaned forward.
“Rebecca, listen carefully. Ethan is under enormous pressure. His company has been struggling, and your behavior has made things worse. He doesn't need another problem right now.””
I glanced at the guardianship document.
“Why do you need control over Emma?””
Patricia's expression hardened.
“Because Ethan and I have already discussed it.””
“Without me?””
“Obviously. You were unconscious.””
My father stepped closer.
“Mrs. Carter, you should leave.””
She turned sharply.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
Patricia laughed.
“This is a private family matter.””
“No,” Dad replied.
“It became a medical and legal matter when your son abandoned his pregnant wife during a life-threatening emergency.””
Patricia's cheeks flushed.
“Ethan would never abandon his family.””
I looked at her.
“He did.””
She turned toward me.
“Enough. You need to stop poisoning everyone against my son.””
Then she reached for the folder.
“Sign the documents.””
I pushed them away.
“No.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“Rebecca.””
“I said no.””
Patricia stood so quickly that the chair scraped against the floor.
“You ungrateful little girl. My son gave you a beautiful home, a comfortable life, and his family name. The least you can do is stop making trouble.””
I stared at her.
“Your son gave me a home where I wasn't safe.””
For the first time, she seemed to have no immediate answer.
Then she leaned down and whispered:
“You should be careful. Ethan has friends in very important places. If you make this ugly, you could lose more than your marriage.””
My father moved between us.
“That's enough.””
Patricia straightened.
She looked at Major Brooks.
“And who is this woman? Why is there a military officer standing in my daughter-in-law's hospital room?””
Major Brooks answered calmly.
“I'm here to ensure Rebecca's safety.””
Patricia scoffed.
“From whom? Her own husband?””
Nobody answered.
Then Patricia's phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
“It's Ethan.””
She answered immediately.
“Darling, I'm here with Rebecca.””
A pause.
Then her expression changed.
“What do you mean?””
She looked at me.
“Yes, the baby is here.””
Another pause.
“No, I haven't signed anything yet.””
Her voice dropped.
“I'm trying.””
I watched her face.
She turned away from us and spoke more quietly.
“Ethan, listen. Your father-in-law is here. Yes, Robert Hayes. I don't know who he is, but he's acting like he owns the hospital.””
My father looked at Major Brooks.
Major Brooks raised an eyebrow.
Patricia continued.
“Just come tomorrow. Bring the paperwork you mentioned.””
Then she ended the call.
I stared at her.
“What paperwork?””
She slipped her phone into her handbag.
“Nothing you need to worry about.””
My father walked to the bedside table and picked up the guardianship papers.
“Who prepared these?””
Patricia looked uncomfortable.
“Ethan's attorney.””
“What's the attorney's name?””
“That's none of your business.””
Dad examined the signature section.
Then he looked at me.
“Rebecca, have you ever authorized anyone to represent you in legal matters?””
“No.””
He nodded.
“Major Brooks?””
She stepped forward.
“Already documented.””
Patricia frowned.
“What are you two talking about?””
Major Brooks took out her phone.
“Mrs. Carter, I'm going to ask you to remain here while we verify the origin of these documents.””
Patricia laughed nervously.
“You can't detain me.””
“No one said anything about detaining you.””
“Then I'm leaving.””
She reached for her handbag.
Before she could move, Dad spoke.
“Mrs. Carter, one more question.””
She turned.
“What?””
“Why did your son ask the hospital whether anyone from Rebecca's family had arrived before asking whether his wife was alive?””
Patricia froze.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
Dad nodded slowly.
“That's interesting.””
He placed the papers back on the table.
“Because we have the hospital's call records.””
Patricia's face lost its color.
I looked at my father.
“What call records?””
He turned toward me.
“Your husband called this hospital three times before your father was even notified. He wanted to know whether you had survived, whether Emma had been born, and whether your family was present.””
Patricia swallowed.
“Ethan was worried.””
Dad's voice remained calm.
“Then why did he ask whether Rebecca's father had arrived before asking about her condition?””
Silence.
Patricia looked toward the door.
Major Brooks quietly moved aside, leaving the exit unobstructed.
My mother-in-law grabbed her handbag.
“This conversation is over.””
She walked out.
But as she reached the hallway, her phone slipped from her hand.
It landed screen-up on the floor.
I caught a glimpse of the message displayed on it.
A message from Ethan.
Make sure she signs before tomorrow. If the baby is already here, we need to secure the documents immediately.
Patricia snatched up the phone.
But it was too late.
My father had seen it.
So had Major Brooks.
And so had I.
Dad slowly turned toward the door.
“Major, I want that message documented.””
“Already done, General.””
I looked at them.
“What does Ethan want?””
My father returned to my bedside.
He sat down and took my hand.
“Sweetheart, I think your husband has been planning something for a long time.””
I felt a chill travel through my body.
“What?””
Dad hesitated.
Then he opened the leather folder and showed me a photograph.
It was Ethan.
Standing outside a building I recognized as his company's headquarters.
Beside him was another man.
A man holding a document.
My name was printed across the top.
And underneath it was a signature that looked almost exactly like mine.
Except I had never signed it.
My father spoke quietly.
“Your husband has been trying to gain control of your family's trust. And the documents suggest he may have been preparing to do it before Emma was even born.””
I stared at the photograph.
Then my phone vibrated again.
This time, it was an unknown number.
The message contained only one sentence.
Rebecca, don't let Ethan take the baby. He already has a plan for what happens when you refuse.
A second message appeared before I could respond.
And your mother-in-law knows exactly what he did.
My blood ran cold.
Because the sender had attached a photograph.
It showed Ethan sitting at a restaurant with his mother.
The date was three weeks earlier.
Between them lay a folder.

On its cover were three words:
*PROJECT EMMA CUSTODY.*
