Chapter 12: The Betrayal Came From Someone I Trusted
The two names on the emergency resolution belonged to men I had known for years.
Edward Blake had been my grandmother's financial adviser.
Thomas Reed had served as a director of Hayes Strategic Holdings since before I was born.
Both men had attended my wedding.
Edward had even given a speech about how much my grandmother would have loved seeing me happy.
Now their signatures appeared on a document designed to remove me from control of my own inheritance.
I stared at the paper.
“Why would they do this?””
My father looked at Amanda.
“Have the signatures been verified?””
“Not yet.””
Major Brooks added:
“The document was submitted electronically through an account associated with the company's administrative office.””
I looked at Dad.
“Could they have been forced?””
“Possibly.””
“Or paid?””
He didn't answer.
Amanda placed the resolution inside her briefcase.
“We need to speak with both individuals before drawing conclusions.””
My father nodded.
“Arrange separate interviews.””
I looked down at Emma.
She was sleeping peacefully, unaware that adults were arguing over a future she hadn't even begun to live.
I felt a sudden wave of anger.
“I'm tired of people deciding what happens to my daughter and my family.””
Dad looked at me.
“Then it's time you make your own decision.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
He pulled a chair closer.
“Your grandmother left you the controlling interest in Hayes Strategic Holdings. You have every right to participate in its governance.””
“But I've never managed a company.””
“You don't need to run the daily operations. You need to decide who you trust to do it.””
I looked at Amanda.
“Can I remove people who are acting without my authorization?””
“Depending on the governing documents and applicable procedures, you may have options. But we need to review the company's bylaws and the trust structure first.””
I nodded.
“Then I want everything reviewed.””
Dad smiled faintly.
“That's a good start.””
At 10:30 the next morning, Edward Blake agreed to speak with the investigators.
His interview took place in a conference room at the company's headquarters.
I joined through a secure video connection from the hospital.
My father sat beside me.
Amanda was on the other side of the room.
Edward appeared on the screen wearing a navy suit and a striped tie.
He looked older than I remembered.
“Rebecca,” he said, “I'm glad you're recovering.””
I stared at him.
“Did you sign the emergency resolution?””
He adjusted his glasses.
“I did.””
My heart sank.
“Why?””
“Because I believed it was necessary to protect the company.””
“From whom?””
“From instability.””
I felt my face grow hot.
“What instability?””
He hesitated.
“Your medical condition. The situation with the pregnancy. Your husband explained that you were struggling.””
I couldn't believe it.
“My husband told you I was unstable?””
“He said you were overwhelmed and that temporary administrative support would help.””
I leaned closer to the screen.
“Did he tell you I was bleeding on my kitchen floor while he went to his mother's birthday party?””
Edward looked down.
“No.””
“Did he tell you our daughter was delivered through emergency surgery?””
“No.””
“Did he tell you I nearly died?””
He didn't answer.
I swallowed.
“Then you had no right to sign anything in my name.””
Edward sighed.
“I understand that now.””
I shook my head.
“Do you?””
Amanda interrupted.
“Mr. Blake, did you personally verify Rebecca's consent before signing?””
He hesitated.
“No.””
“Did you speak with her?””
“No.””
“Did you review the original trust documents?””
“Not fully.””
Amanda wrote something down.
“Then why did you sign?””
Edward looked toward someone outside the camera's view.
Then he answered quietly.
“Because Mr. Langford told me the transfer had already been approved.””
My father leaned forward.
“Approved by whom?””
Edward looked directly at him.
“By the chairman.””
“Victor Langford?””
“Yes.””
I stared at the screen.
“Victor isn't the chairman of my company.””
Edward looked uncomfortable.
“He said he had authority through an existing agreement.””
My father immediately asked:
“What agreement?””
Edward shook his head.
“I never saw the original.””
Amanda looked up.
“Did you receive payment?””
Edward's expression changed.
“No.””
“Did anyone offer you money?””
He hesitated.
Then he said:
“Mr. Langford offered to protect my position on the board.””
Silence filled the room.
I looked at him.
“So you signed away my authority to protect your job?””
Edward lowered his eyes.
“I'm sorry, Rebecca.””
I ended the video connection.
My hands were shaking.
Dad sat quietly beside me.
After a moment, he said:
“That's one.””
“What?””
“One person who has admitted making a decision without your consent.””
I looked at him.
“And Thomas?””
“We'll hear his explanation.””
At 1:45 p.m., Thomas Reed refused to attend his scheduled interview.
Instead, he sent a written statement claiming he had been traveling and had no knowledge of the emergency resolution.
Amanda read it twice.
“That's interesting.””
“Why?”” I asked.
“The electronic submission was made using credentials assigned to Mr. Reed's office.””
My father looked at Major Brooks.
“Can we establish where the login originated?””
“Investigators are working on that.””
Then Olivia called.
She sounded frightened.
“Rebecca, I found something.””
“What?””
“I went back through the old company emails. There was a meeting scheduled between Ethan, Thomas Reed, and Victor Langford two days before your baby shower.””
I stared.
“Why didn't you tell me earlier?””
“I didn't know what it was about until I found the attachment.””
“What attachment?””
She sent it.
The document appeared on my screen.
It was a proposed agreement titled:
*PROJECT NEW BEGINNING — BOARD TRANSITION AND FAMILY BENEFICIARY CONTROL.*
I opened it.
The first page described a restructuring of Hayes Strategic Holdings.
The second page listed several proposed appointments.
And the third page contained a section that made my blood run cold.
*Proposed temporary family representative: Patricia Carter.*
I read it again.
Patricia.
My mother-in-law.
The woman who had stood beside my hospital bed demanding control over Emma.
They had planned to give her authority over the family assets.
Amanda took the phone and examined the document.
“This is important.””
My father looked at the date.
“Two days before the baby shower.””
I nodded.
I remembered that day.
Patricia had arrived carrying a beautiful pink gift basket.
She had kissed my cheek and told me she couldn't wait to become a grandmother.
Then she had spent the afternoon telling everyone how lucky Ethan was to have a wife who would give him an heir.
I had believed she was simply being overbearing.
Now I wondered whether every compliment had been part of a performance.
Another message arrived from Olivia.
There's one more page.
I opened it.
At the bottom was a list of names connected to the proposed restructuring.
Ethan Carter.
Victor Langford.
Michael Rourke.
Daniel Mercer.
Patricia Carter.
And one final name.
*Thomas Reed.*
I looked at my father.
“Thomas was part of it.””
Dad nodded slowly.
“That's what it appears to show.””
Then Amanda received a call.
She listened, her face becoming increasingly serious.
When she ended it, she turned toward us.
“The investigators have located Thomas Reed.””
“Where?”” Dad asked.
“At the Carter residence.””
I frowned.
“Why would he be there?””
Amanda glanced at her notes.
“Because he has been helping Ethan move company records.””
My father stood.
“Have they secured the property?””
“Yes. Investigators are on their way.””
Then Amanda added:
“There's something else. Thomas has requested protection in exchange for providing information.””
I stared.
“Protection from whom?””
She hesitated.
“Victor Langford.””
My father looked toward the window.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he turned back.
“Now we're getting somewhere.””
I looked at Emma.
“Daddy, what happens if Victor is dangerous?””
Dad took my hand.
“Then we let the authorities handle him. Nobody is going to solve this by taking the law into their own hands.””
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
You think you've won because your father has soldiers? You haven't seen what Victor can do.
A second message appeared.
Ask him about the Blackridge incident.
I looked up.
“Daddy?””
He had already seen the screen.
His face went pale.
Not with fear.
With recognition.
“Where did you hear that name?”” he whispered.
I showed him the message.
He read it.
Then he slowly sat down.
“Rebecca, there are things about my military career I never wanted you to know.””
I stared at him.
“What happened at Blackridge?””
He looked toward Major Brooks.
She closed the door.
Then my father said five words that changed the direction of everything.
May you like
“Victor Langford was there that night.””
And judging by his expression, the man my husband had chosen as his partner was connected to a secret my father had spent years trying to bury.
