Chapter 18: The Witness Who Never Came Home

My father didn't look at me when he said the name.

“James Whitaker was a civilian auditor assigned to review the contractor payments during Blackridge. He discovered that several companies had received money for equipment that was never delivered.””

I listened without moving.

“Was he working for Victor?””

“No. He was working for the government.””

“Then why did he disappear?””

Dad folded his hands.

“He was scheduled to testify about the missing funds. The night before his interview, he vanished.””

I stared at him.

“Was he kidnapped?””

“We never established that. His vehicle was found abandoned outside a service station. There was no evidence of a struggle.””

“Did you investigate?””

“Of course.””

“Then what happened?””

“The case was transferred to civilian authorities. They followed several leads, but none produced enough evidence to establish what happened to him.””

I looked at the folder on the table.

“And Victor?””

“He denied meeting Whitaker that evening.””

“Did you believe him?””

My father sighed.

“I believed there was something he wasn't telling us.””

Major Brooks stood near the door.

“General, the investigators have requested the original Blackridge records.””

Dad nodded.

“Give them the reference numbers and the official reports. Nothing classified should be transferred outside the approved process.””

“Yes, sir.””

I looked between them.

“Could James Whitaker still be alive?””

Neither answered immediately.

Then Major Brooks said:

“There's a possibility.””

My father turned toward her.

“What have you found?””

She placed a printed report on the table.

“Thomas Reed mentioned that Victor had been receiving payments from a company registered under the name Whitaker Research Services.””

My heart began beating faster.

“Whitaker?””

“It's a common surname,” Dad said.

“We shouldn't assume a connection.””

Major Brooks nodded.

“Agreed. But the registration documents list a director with the initials J.W.””

Amanda entered the room just then.

She had heard the last part.

“That's interesting,” she said.

“Because the company received a payment from Northbridge Consulting three weeks before Emma was born.””

I looked at her.

“Could it be James?””

“Possibly. The investigators are checking.””

My father stood.

“Don't contact anyone associated with that company until the authorities establish who controls it.””

Amanda nodded.

Then she placed another document beside the report.

“This came from Thomas.””

It was a printed email.

The subject line read:

*BLACKRIDGE — FINAL SETTLEMENT.*

The sender was Victor Langford.

The recipient was an address belonging to Ethan.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Ethan received an email about Blackridge?””

“Apparently,” Amanda replied.

She read the message.

The old matter must remain closed. The same principle applies to the current arrangement. Your wife does not need to understand the history. She only needs to sign the necessary documents.

I stared at the screen.

“He knew.””

My father looked at me.

“He knew enough to be concerned.””

Amanda scrolled down.

There was a second paragraph.

If the auditor's records ever surface, the entire structure becomes vulnerable. Ensure Reed understands the consequences of disclosure.

I looked at my father.

“James Whitaker's records?””

“That's what it suggests.””

I felt a chill.

“Why would Ethan care about an old military investigation?””

Dad answered quietly.

“Because the same financial structure may have been used again.””

The room fell silent.

Then my phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

Amanda glanced at my father.

He nodded.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man's voice spoke.

“Is this Rebecca Hayes Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is James Whitaker.””

I stopped breathing.

My father looked up.

Major Brooks immediately moved closer.

“Who is this?”” I whispered.

“I'm the man your father has been looking for.””

I stared at the phone.

“Are you really James Whitaker?””

“I can prove it.””

My father reached for the phone.

“Mr. Whitaker, this is Robert Hayes.””

There was a pause.

Then the man laughed bitterly.

“I wondered when you'd hear from me.””

“Where have you been?””

“Somewhere I couldn't safely speak.””

“Are you in danger?””

“I've been in danger for twenty years.””

My father closed his eyes.

“Why contact my daughter?””

“Because Victor has made the same mistake twice.””

“What mistake?””

“He believes he can use a family to conceal a financial crime.””

My heart pounded.

“What does that have to do with me?””

The voice softened.

“Your grandmother tried to stop him before. She refused to let her company become a channel for money that had disappeared during Blackridge.””

I stared at my father.

He looked stunned.

“Did you know my grandmother?”” I asked.

“Yes. She was one of the few people who believed me.””

I felt tears forming.

“My grandmother knew about Blackridge?””

“She knew enough to understand that Victor's company was involved in something dangerous. She helped preserve records when the official investigation started losing evidence.””

My father stepped closer.

“James, where are you?””

“I can't tell you over the phone.””

“Then tell me what you need.””

“I need protection, and I need to deliver the original records.””

My father nodded.

“Contact the civilian investigators. We'll make sure the appropriate authorities know you're willing to cooperate.””

The man hesitated.

“Robert, there's something else.””

“What?””

“Your son-in-law has a copy of the original Blackridge ledger.””

I felt the room tilt.

“Ethan?””

“Yes. Victor gave it to him.””

My father looked at Amanda.

“Where is it?””

“I don't know. But Ethan mentioned a storage facility in one of his emails.””

Amanda immediately began searching the records.

She found an address.

“It's a private storage facility outside the city.””

Major Brooks contacted the investigators.

They confirmed that a warrant application could be submitted based on the new evidence.

I looked at my father.

“Why would Ethan keep that ledger?””

“Because it may contain the names of people who were involved in the original transfers.””

“And Victor wants it hidden.””

My father nodded.

The voice on the phone returned.

“Rebecca, listen carefully. Your husband isn't the only person who has been promised money.””

“Who else?””

“Someone inside the company.””

I looked at Amanda.

“Who?””

The man took a breath.

“Edward Blake.””

My stomach dropped.

“Edward signed the resolution.””

“Yes. But he wasn't just misled. He received a payment from a company connected to Victor.””

Amanda immediately opened the financial records.

She searched the transaction history.

Then her expression changed.

“There's a transfer.””

My father looked at her.

“How much?””

“Four hundred and fifty thousand dollars.””

I stared at the screen.

“Edward said he was fooled.””

Amanda nodded slowly.

“He may have been. But this payment needs explaining.””

My father returned to the phone.

“James, can you provide evidence?””

“I have copies. And I have the original ledger.””

“Then we need to get you somewhere safe.””

“There's one more thing.””

“What?””

“Victor knows I contacted Rebecca.””

My blood ran cold.

“How?””

The man whispered:

“Because I received a message five minutes ago.””

“What did it say?””

A pause.

Then he read the words.

You have made a serious mistake. The girl is still in the hospital, and the family is not as protected as you think.

My father stood immediately.

Major Brooks called hospital security.

Amanda grabbed my hand.

I looked at Emma.

“Does he know where we are?””

“We're checking,” Major Brooks said.

Then the hospital security director appeared at the door.

His face was pale.

“General Hayes, we've received a report from the parking garage.””

My father turned.

“What report?””

“A vehicle has been parked near the private entrance for nearly forty minutes. The registration is connected to a company associated with Victor Langford.””

He looked at me.

“Is the driver inside?””

The director shook his head.

“No.””

“Then where is he?””

The director swallowed.

“He left the vehicle and entered the hospital.””

A moment later, the corridor lights flickered.

Then the hospital intercom announced that security personnel were responding to an unauthorized access attempt.

My father stepped in front of my bed.

Major Brooks moved toward the door.

And my phone buzzed one final time.

A message from Ethan.

I tried to warn you. Victor is coming for the ledger, and he knows exactly where to find it.

I looked at the screen.

Then I looked at my father.

“Daddy, what do we do?””

He took my hand.

“We stay together. We follow the security team's instructions, and we let the authorities handle the threat.””

Outside my room, footsteps hurried down the corridor.

Then someone knocked three times.

A nurse opened the door.

She was trembling.

“Mrs. Carter,” she whispered.

“There's a man downstairs asking for Emma.””

I clutched my daughter.

“What man?””

The nurse looked toward my father.

“He says he's here on behalf of the baby's father.””

My father turned to Major Brooks.

May you like

“Call the police. Now.””

And somewhere below us, the man who had come looking for my daughter was already demanding to be let upstairs.
