Chapter 15: The Letter My Husband Hid Before I Gave Birth

The investigators found the letter inside Ethan's locked office safe.

It was sealed in a white envelope with my full name written across the front.

*Rebecca Hayes Carter.*

My father placed the photograph of the envelope on the bedside table.

I stared at it.

“What's inside?””

“Apparently, something Ethan wanted hidden until after Emma's birth.””

Amanda adjusted her glasses.

“Investigators are reviewing the contents before releasing copies. We don't want to compromise the evidence.””

I nodded.

But I couldn't stop thinking about the handwriting.

I recognized it.

Ethan's.

He had written hundreds of birthday cards and anniversary notes over the years.

I knew the way he crossed his letter T.

I knew how he curved the final R in my name.

That envelope was his.

And it had been hidden in a safe.

At 5:15 p.m., Amanda received the first summary.

She read it silently.

Then she looked at me.

“Rebecca, this letter contains a proposed separation agreement.””

I frowned.

“Divorce?””

“Not exactly. It was drafted as a conditional agreement involving custody and financial control.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Amanda explained.

“The document proposed that you voluntarily transfer certain decision-making responsibilities to Ethan and Patricia for a period of twelve months. In exchange, Ethan would provide financial support and agree not to pursue a contested divorce.””

I stared at her.

“He wanted me to sign away my rights to Emma?””

“Some parental decision-making rights, yes. The exact legal effect would depend on the provisions and whether any court approved them.””

My father shook his head.

“This was never a normal family disagreement.””

Amanda continued.

“There is also a section involving your grandmother's trust.””

I looked at the document.

It stated that I would authorize Ethan to manage Emma's inheritance until she reached adulthood.

I felt sick.

“He wanted everything.””

My father nodded.

“That's what the documents suggest.””

Then Amanda pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.

“There's something else.””

I leaned closer.

The paragraph read:

In the event of the mother's refusal to cooperate, the parties may proceed using existing medical and financial authorizations, subject to legal review.

I looked at her.

“Existing authorizations?””

“That's what we need to investigate.””

My father turned toward Major Brooks.

“Find out whether Ethan had access to any documents signed by Rebecca before the pregnancy.””

Major Brooks nodded.

I remembered the tax paperwork.

The passport copies.

The insurance forms.

The countless documents Ethan had asked me to sign without explanation.

I felt foolish.

“Daddy, I gave him so many things.””

He sat beside me.

“You trusted your husband. That's not your fault.””

I looked at the envelope again.

“Can I read the letter?””

Amanda nodded.

“Once the investigators release the complete copy, yes.””

At 6:40 p.m., the hospital received another visitor.

This time, it was Ethan.

He stood at the reception desk wearing a dark blue suit.

His hair was perfectly styled.

His expensive watch gleamed beneath the fluorescent lights.

He looked like a man arriving for an important business meeting.

Not a man whose wife had nearly died two days earlier.

Security refused to let him pass.

I watched the hallway camera feed on Major Brooks's tablet.

Ethan held up his phone.

“I'm the baby's father. I have every right to see my daughter.””

The security officer replied:

“Sir, you'll need to follow the hospital's visitor authorization procedures.””

Ethan pointed toward the corridor.

“My wife is in there.””

“Your wife has not authorized your visit.””

His face darkened.

“This is ridiculous.””

Then he spotted Major Brooks through the glass.

He walked toward her.

“Major, I need to speak with Rebecca.””

She remained calm.

“Have you been advised that she does not wish to receive visitors?””

“She's my wife.””

“That's not an answer to my question.””

Ethan looked past her.

Then he saw me.

Our eyes met through the glass.

For a moment, his expression softened.

He raised one hand.

I didn't move.

He pointed toward the door and mouthed something.

Please.

I turned away.

Major Brooks approached my bed.

“Do you want him removed from the property?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

She spoke to security.

A few minutes later, Ethan was escorted toward the main entrance.

But before leaving, he shouted something loud enough for the hallway cameras to capture.

“Rebecca! You can't keep my daughter from me forever!””

I closed my eyes.

My father gently touched my shoulder.

“Don't let him frighten you.””

“He looked so angry.””

“Because he's no longer controlling the situation.””

I looked at him.

“Do you think he ever cared about Emma?””

Dad was quiet.

Then he answered.

“I think a man who truly cares about his child doesn't treat that child's mother as an obstacle to overcome.””

I swallowed.

At 7:30 p.m., Amanda received the complete copy of the letter.

She read it carefully.

Then she handed it to me.

I began reading.

The first paragraph was addressed to me.

Rebecca, by the time you read this, Emma will have been born, and I expect you will understand why I had to make certain arrangements.

My hands trembled.

The letter continued.

Our marriage has never been as simple as you believed. There are responsibilities connected to your family that you don't understand. I have spent months ensuring that our daughter will have the future she deserves.

I turned the page.

Patricia will help you adjust. Daniel has prepared the necessary documents. You need only sign them.

Then came the paragraph that made my blood run cold.

I know you may initially resist. But once you understand the financial consequences of refusing, you will realize that cooperation is your best option.

I looked up.

“Financial consequences?””

Amanda pointed to the final page.

There was a handwritten note.

It wasn't addressed to me.

It appeared to be an instruction for someone else.

If she refuses, activate Plan B. Use the medical report. Patricia knows what to say.

I stared at the words.

My father took the letter.

He read it twice.

Then he looked at Major Brooks.

“Plan B?””

She shook her head.

“We haven't identified what that refers to.””

Amanda turned another page.

There was a list of telephone numbers.

One belonged to Daniel Mercer.

Another belonged to Michael Rourke.

The third belonged to Dr. Helen Foster's office.

But the fourth number was unfamiliar.

I looked at my father.

“Who is that?””

Major Brooks entered it into her secure system.

A moment later, she looked up.

“General, that number belongs to a private transportation company.””

My stomach tightened.

“The company Olivia mentioned?””

“Yes. Sterling Protective Services.””

Dad looked at the letter.

“Then we need to establish what Plan B involved.””

Before anyone could answer, Olivia called.

Her voice was shaking.

“Rebecca, I just received something from an old company email account.””

“What?””

“It's an attachment Ethan sent to Patricia three weeks ago.””

“Send it to Amanda.””

A few seconds later, the file appeared.

It was a spreadsheet.

At the top was a heading.

*PLAN B — EMERGENCY CHILD TRANSFER.*

I felt my entire body go cold.

The spreadsheet contained a date, a vehicle registration, a hospital exit route, and the names of two individuals assigned to collect Emma.

But the final column contained something even worse.

*AUTHORIZATION SOURCE: MOTHER'S MEDICAL INCAPACITY.*

I looked at my father.

“Daddy…”

He took the phone.

His jaw tightened.

Major Brooks immediately contacted the hospital security director.

Then she turned back toward us.

“General, we need to move Emma to a secure neonatal area and notify the investigators immediately.””

I clutched the blanket.

“They were going to take her from the hospital?””

Dad held my hand.

“We're going to make sure that doesn't happen.””

Then Amanda noticed a note at the bottom of the spreadsheet.

It contained a final instruction.

If the mother is conscious, use the paternal grandmother's authority.

I looked at the date.

It was scheduled for the following morning.

Patricia hadn't simply been trying to visit her granddaughter.

She had been assigned to help execute the plan.

And suddenly, I understood why Ethan had returned so confidently.

He hadn't come to apologize.

He hadn't come to meet his newborn daughter.

He had come expecting to collect something he believed already belonged to him.

My father stood.

“Major Brooks, notify the authorities. I want the hospital security team fully briefed.””

“Yes, sir.””

Then he turned toward me.

“Rebecca, tomorrow is going to be different.””

I looked at Emma.

“What happens tomorrow?””

May you like

He placed his hand over mine.

“Tomorrow, your husband is going to discover that the woman he left on the kitchen floor is no longer standing alone.””
