Chapter 17: The Boardroom Betrayal

The boardroom at Hayes Strategic Holdings had been built to impress.

Glass walls overlooked the city. A long walnut table filled the center of the room. On one side sat the directors. On the other sat the legal and financial advisers.

At the head of the table stood Victor Langford.

He had arrived ten minutes early.

By the time the meeting began, he had already placed a leather folder in front of every director.

Inside was the same emergency resolution that had appeared in the earlier investigation.

The document claimed that I was temporarily incapable of managing my inheritance and that the company needed an emergency representative.

Ethan sat beside Victor.

He looked tired.

But his expression was confident.

“Let's begin,” Victor announced.

The company secretary, Margaret Ellis, looked at the paperwork.

“Before we proceed, I need to confirm that all directors received the supporting documentation.””

“They did,” Victor replied.

“And the beneficiary's authorization?””

Victor opened his folder.

“Provided.””

Margaret examined the signature.

Her expression tightened.

“Mr. Langford, this signature has not been verified.””

Ethan leaned forward.

“It's Rebecca's signature.””

Margaret looked at him.

“Have you personally witnessed her sign this document?””

Ethan hesitated.

“I'm her husband.””

“That wasn't my question.””

Victor interrupted.

“Margaret, we're wasting time. The company is facing a serious governance issue. We need to act.””

One director, Mr. Caldwell, cleared his throat.

“Perhaps we should postpone until the beneficiary's legal representative can attend.””

Victor turned toward him.

“Postponement would expose the company to unnecessary risk.””

“What risk?””

Victor placed another document on the table.

“A pending financial transaction involving a substantial investment opportunity. If we delay, we may lose the buyer.””

Margaret frowned.

“Who is the buyer?””

“Northbridge Consulting.””

The room went quiet.

Caldwell looked at Ethan.

“Isn't that the company connected to the disputed transfers?””

Ethan's face hardened.

“Those transfers were legitimate.””

Margaret opened her laptop.

“Then you won't object to a full audit.””

Victor smiled.

“Of course not.””

“Good. Because the audit team has already been appointed.””

Victor's smile disappeared.

The conference room door opened.

Amanda Collins entered.

She carried a document case.

Behind her was the company's independent legal counsel.

Victor stood.

“This meeting is restricted.””

Amanda placed her credentials on the table.

“I represent Rebecca Hayes Carter, the controlling beneficiary whose name appears on your resolution.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Where's Rebecca?””

“Recovering from surgery.””

“She should be here.””

Amanda stared at him.

“She nearly died giving birth to your daughter.””

Ethan looked away.

Victor stepped forward.

“Counsel, this is a corporate matter. Your client's personal circumstances are irrelevant.””

“Actually, they're central to the fraudulent documents you've submitted.””

Amanda opened her case.

She removed three documents.

“The first is the original guardianship filing. The second is the disputed medical statement. The third is the emergency resolution presented to this board.””

Margaret examined them.

Amanda continued.

“The psychiatrist whose name appears on the medical statement has formally denied conducting any evaluation of Rebecca.””

A director leaned forward.

“Are you saying the report is false?””

“I'm saying the named doctor has denied authoring it, and investigators are examining how her professional identity was used.””

Ethan stood abruptly.

“This is ridiculous.””

Amanda turned toward him.

“Would you like to explain why your email instructed your mother to use the medical report if Rebecca refused to cooperate?””

His face went pale.

Victor stepped in.

“Those emails have been taken out of context.””

Amanda placed another page on the table.

“Then let's examine the complete conversation.””

She read aloud:

“If she refuses, activate Plan B. Use the medical report. Patricia knows what to say.”

No one moved.

Ethan looked at Victor.

Victor looked at Amanda.

Margaret slowly closed the folder in front of her.

“I move that this meeting be suspended pending independent review.””

Caldwell immediately seconded.

Victor slammed his hand against the table.

“You cannot suspend a meeting based on allegations!””

Margaret replied:

“We can suspend a meeting when the documents presented to it are under credible challenge.””

Then the boardroom door opened again.

This time, Thomas Reed entered.

He looked exhausted.

His tie was crooked, and his hands were shaking.

Victor stared at him.

“You're not supposed to be here.””

Thomas ignored him.

“I need to speak.””

Ethan stood.

“Thomas, sit down.””

“No.””

Thomas looked around the table.

“I signed the resolution because I was told Rebecca had already approved the arrangement. I didn't verify it.””

Victor's voice became cold.

“Think very carefully about what you're saying.””

Thomas swallowed.

“I've already given my statement to investigators.””

Ethan stepped toward him.

“You said you wouldn't do that.””

Thomas shook his head.

“You told me this was just a family matter. You said we were protecting the company.””

“And we were.””

“No, Ethan. We were stealing from her.””

The room erupted.

Victor shouted for security.

Margaret ordered everyone to remain seated.

Amanda looked at Thomas.

“Do you have the original communications?””

Thomas nodded.

“Emails, payment instructions, and the original transfer schedule.””

“Where are they?””

“In a secure location. Investigators have copies.””

Victor suddenly reached for his leather folder.

A uniformed police officer entered with two investigators.

“Mr. Langford, we'd like to speak with you regarding the documents and financial transactions under investigation.””

Victor froze.

“You can't interrupt a private corporate meeting.””

“We're not here to interrupt it. We're here to execute a lawful request for your cooperation.””

Ethan stepped back.

The officer turned toward him.

“Mr. Carter, we'd also like to speak with you.””

Ethan looked at Amanda.

Then he looked at Thomas.

“You betrayed me.””

Thomas lowered his head.

“No, Ethan. I stopped helping you.””

The investigators escorted Victor and Ethan into separate rooms for questioning.

The board meeting was suspended.

The proposed transfer was frozen pending review.

And for the first time, Hayes Strategic Holdings had a chance to protect itself.

At 11:46, Amanda called my hospital room.

“Rebecca, the board has rejected the emergency resolution.””

I closed my eyes.

“Is the company safe?””

“The proposed transfer cannot proceed. The independent directors have appointed an outside administrator to preserve the records and protect the company's operations.””

I looked at my father.

He nodded.

“What about Ethan?””

“He's being questioned. The investigators are also reviewing his role in the forged documents and financial transfers.””

I felt tears slide down my cheeks.

“Thank you.””

Amanda's voice softened.

“You don't have to thank me. We're not finished yet.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

She paused.

“Victor has provided a statement. He's claiming Ethan acted without his knowledge.””

I looked at my father.

“Of course he is.””

Amanda continued.

“But Thomas has supplied evidence that contradicts Victor's account.””

“Then what happens now?””

“The investigators are comparing the statements with the financial records.””

She hesitated.

“There's one more thing. Victor claims Robert Hayes was involved in the original Blackridge financial investigation in a way that hasn't been disclosed.””

My father went still.

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

He didn't answer.

Amanda spoke again.

“Rebecca, I think your father needs to tell you the rest of the Blackridge story.””

The call ended.

I turned toward him.

“Daddy?””

He looked older than he had that morning.

Then he pulled a chair beside my bed.

“There was one person who disappeared before the Blackridge investigation ended,” he said.

“Who?””

“A civilian auditor named James Whitaker.””

“What happened to him?””

May you like

My father looked at the window.

“Victor Langford was the last person known to have met him.””
