Chapter 14: The Man Who Walked Into the Hospital Without Fear
Victor Langford entered my hospital room at 3:40 p.m.
He was in his early sixties, with silver hair, a perfectly tailored black suit, and a gold watch that looked more expensive than the car Ethan drove.
He carried no briefcase.
No documents.
Just a calm smile.
Two hospital security officers stood behind him.
My father remained near the window.
Major Brooks stood beside the door.
Amanda sat at the table with her laptop open.
Victor looked around.
Then his eyes settled on me.
“Mrs. Carter.””
I didn't answer.
He smiled politely.
“Congratulations on your daughter.””
I looked at him.
“You're the man who planned to take her?””
His smile disappeared for half a second.
Then it returned.
“That's an unfortunate misunderstanding.””
I stared at him.
“Did you help my husband forge my signature?””
“I'm afraid you've been given incomplete information.””
My father stepped forward.
“Victor.””
Victor turned.
“General Hayes. It's been a long time.””
“Not long enough.””
Victor chuckled.
“You haven't changed.””
“Neither have you.””
The two men stared at each other.
I felt the tension in the room.
Victor finally looked back at me.
“Rebecca, I understand you've been through a difficult experience. Your husband is concerned about you.””
I almost laughed.
“Is that why he left me bleeding on the kitchen floor?””
Victor adjusted his cuff.
“I'm not here to discuss your marriage.””
“Then why are you here?””
“To prevent an unnecessary misunderstanding from becoming a much larger problem.””
Amanda closed her laptop.
“Mr. Langford, are you aware that your name appears on several documents submitted without Rebecca's authorization?””
Victor smiled.
“I'm aware of the allegations.””
“Are you denying your involvement?””
“I deny any wrongdoing.””
My father folded his arms.
“Then why did you arrange a meeting with the company directors using a document that falsely identified my daughter as the approving beneficiary?””
Victor's smile faded.
“Business matters are complicated, General.””
“Fraud is not complicated.””
Victor turned toward him.
“Careful, Robert. You don't have the authority you once had.””
My father didn't move.
“I don't need military authority to recognize a forged signature.””
Victor laughed softly.
“Still dramatic.””
Major Brooks stepped forward.
“Mr. Langford, this conversation is being documented. You may direct any formal response through your legal counsel.””
Victor glanced at her insignia.
“Major Brooks. I remember you.””
She remained expressionless.
“I remember the Blackridge investigation too.””
For the first time, Victor's face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
“That's ancient history,” he said.
“Then you shouldn't have any difficulty answering questions about the financial structures currently under review.””
Victor looked at my father.
“You've been teaching your daughter to ask dangerous questions.””
Dad answered immediately.
“No. I've been teaching her to recognize when someone is lying.””
Victor walked closer to my bed.
I instinctively moved Emma's blanket.
“Don't come any closer.””
He stopped.
“Rebecca, I understand you're upset. But you need to consider the consequences of what you're doing.””
I looked directly at him.
“What consequences?””
“Your husband has made commitments. Your family has made commitments. There are financial arrangements that affect several people.””
“My family didn't make those arrangements.””
Victor lowered his voice.
“Your grandmother understood the importance of cooperation.””
I frowned.
“You knew my grandmother?””
“Of course.””
“What did she think of you?””
He smiled.
“She was a formidable woman.””
“She never mentioned you.””
His expression hardened.
“Perhaps she had reasons.””
My father stepped between us.
“That's enough.””
Victor raised both hands.
“I'm leaving.””
He turned toward the door.
Then he paused.
“One last thing, Rebecca.””
I didn't answer.
“Your husband is in trouble. You can help him by withdrawing your complaints and allowing the family to resolve this privately.””
I stared at him.
“Why would I protect a man who tried to take my daughter?””
Victor looked at Emma.
“Because children deserve a stable family.””
I felt something inside me snap.
“Then you should have told Ethan to come home when I was begging him to take me to the hospital.””
Victor said nothing.
I continued.
“You should have told him that a birthday dinner wasn't more important than his wife and unborn child.””
His jaw tightened.
“And you should have told him that no amount of money gives him the right to decide whether I deserve to be a mother.””
My father looked at me with quiet pride.
Victor turned away.
“Very well.””
He walked toward the door.
Then he stopped beside Major Brooks.
“Tell your superiors I said hello.””
Major Brooks replied calmly.
“I'm sure they'll appreciate hearing from you through the proper channels.””
Victor left.
The door closed.
I looked at my father.
“Was that a threat?””
Dad nodded.
“An attempt at intimidation.””
Amanda immediately sent a message to the investigators.
“His visit needs to be documented.””
Major Brooks checked the hallway camera feed.
“General, there's another problem.””
“What?””
“Victor arrived in a vehicle registered to a company that received payments from Carter Holdings.””
Dad's expression hardened.
“Preserve the footage.””
She nodded.
Then Amanda's phone rang.
She listened.
“Understood.””
When she ended the call, she looked at me.
“Rebecca, Ethan has been located.””
“Where?””
“At the Carter residence.””
“Is he alone?””
“No. He's with Patricia and Michael Rourke.””
I swallowed.
“What are they doing?””
Amanda glanced at the report.
“They're attempting to move several company files before investigators complete the search.””
My father stood.
“Have the investigators been notified?””
“Yes.””
Then another message arrived.
Amanda read it.
Her face changed.
“What?””
“Ethan has submitted an emergency application to the family court.””
My stomach dropped.
“For what?””
She looked at the screen.
“Temporary custody of Emma.””
I stared at her.
“Can he do that?””
“Anyone can file an application. That doesn't mean it will be granted.””
“What's the reason?””
Amanda hesitated.
Then she showed me the filing.
The document claimed that I was medically incapable of caring for Emma and that my father was interfering with the child's relationship with her paternal family.
I felt sick.
“They're still doing it.””
Amanda nodded.
“But now we have evidence contradicting their claims.””
My father picked up the document.
“Who signed the supporting statement?””
Amanda pointed to the bottom.
Dr. Helen Foster.
I looked at her.
“But she told us she refused!””
Amanda zoomed in.
The signature looked real.
The doctor's name was printed beneath it.
My father immediately reached for his phone.
“Call Dr. Foster.””
Major Brooks stepped closer.
Amanda read the filing again.
Then she noticed something.
“Wait.””
She turned the page.
The document contained a date.
It had supposedly been signed two days earlier.
But Dr. Foster's recorded statement from that morning clearly said she had never evaluated me.
Amanda looked at my father.
“This is another falsified document.””
He nodded.
“And this time, Ethan has made the mistake of putting it before a court.””
I looked down at Emma.
My daughter was sleeping peacefully.
I kissed her forehead.
Then I looked at the filing.
“I'm done being afraid of him.””
My father placed a hand on my shoulder.
“Good.””
At that exact moment, Major Brooks received a message.
She read it and turned toward us.
“General, the investigators have just entered the Carter residence.””
I swallowed.
“What did they find?””
Major Brooks looked at the report.
“Several documents, two encrypted storage devices, and a locked safe.””
May you like
Then she added:
“They also found something addressed directly to Rebecca.””
