Chapter 16: The Morning Their Plan Fell Apart
At 5:12 the following morning, I woke to the sound of a phone vibrating on the bedside table.
For a moment, I didn't know where I was.
Then I saw Emma's empty bassinet beside my bed and remembered everything.
The forged documents.
The secret transportation plan.
The letter in Ethan's handwriting.
And Patricia's name beside the words paternal grandmother's authority.
I reached for my phone.
Amanda had sent three messages.
The investigators have confirmed the transportation company received a deposit from a company controlled by Michael Rourke.
The hospital has been notified.
Do not leave your room without speaking to security.
I sat up carefully.
My incision hurt, but the pain was nothing compared with the fear twisting inside my chest.
A nurse entered carrying Emma.
“Good morning, Mama. Someone missed you.””
She placed my daughter gently in my arms.
I kissed her forehead.
“Good morning, sweetheart.””
For several minutes, I forgot about Ethan.
I forgot about Victor.
I forgot about the people who had tried to turn my daughter into an asset.
There was only Emma's tiny hand wrapped around my finger.
Then Major Brooks entered.
“Rebecca, we have an update.””
I looked up.
“Did they find the transportation team?””
“The investigators identified both individuals named in the spreadsheet. One is a former security contractor. The other is a driver employed by Sterling Protective Services.””
“Are they coming here?””
“They were scheduled to arrive this morning. Hospital security has been instructed not to admit them, and law enforcement has been notified.””
My father followed her into the room.
“There's more.””
He placed a printed email on the table.
It was from Ethan to Patricia.
The hospital situation is becoming difficult. If Rebecca continues refusing, we need to use the court filing and establish temporary authority before the company meeting.
I looked at the timestamp.
It had been sent at 2:18 a.m.
“Last night?””
Dad nodded.
“He knows the plan is compromised.””
“Then why would he still come?””
“Because he may believe he has another way to force the issue.””
Major Brooks received a call.
She listened.
Then she looked at my father.
“General, one of the contractors is outside the hospital.””
My arms tightened around Emma.
“Which one?””
“The driver.””
Dad immediately stepped toward the door.
“Is he attempting to enter?””
“No. He's sitting in a vehicle across the street.””
“Notify the police.””
Major Brooks did.
Within minutes, two uniformed officers arrived. They approached the vehicle and spoke with the driver.
He stepped out.
He was a broad-shouldered man wearing a gray jacket.
I watched through the hallway camera.
The officers questioned him.
Then one of them opened the vehicle's rear door.
Inside were two empty infant carriers, several blankets, and a folder.
The driver began shaking his head.
One officer removed the folder.
A second vehicle pulled into the hospital entrance.
Patricia.
She stepped out wearing a cream-colored coat and carrying a handbag.
Even through the camera, I recognized her expression.
She looked irritated.
She walked directly toward the security desk.
“I am the baby's grandmother. I have legal authority to collect her.””
The security guard asked for identification.
Patricia handed over a document.
He examined it.
Then shook his head.
“Ma'am, this authorization is not valid for access to the neonatal unit.””
“You don't understand. My son arranged everything.””
“I'm sorry. You cannot enter.””
Patricia's voice rose.
“Call Ethan.””
The guard remained calm.
“Ma'am, please step away from the desk.””
She turned and saw the police officers questioning the driver.
Her face changed.
Then she spotted Major Brooks approaching the lobby.
“What is she doing here?”” Patricia demanded.
Major Brooks stopped several feet away.
“Mrs. Carter, you need to remain here while the officers complete their inquiry.””
Patricia clutched her handbag.
“This is harassment.””
One of the officers stepped forward.
“Ma'am, we'd like to ask you some questions about a planned transportation arrangement.””
“I don't know anything about that.””
The officer showed her a copy of the spreadsheet.
Patricia stared at it.
For the first time since I'd known her, she appeared genuinely frightened.
Then she said something that made my father turn toward me.
“Ethan told me this was all approved.””
The room went silent.
Major Brooks looked at the officer.
“Did you hear that?””
“Yes, ma'am.””
Patricia realized her mistake.
“I meant the family arrangement. Not this.””
But the officer was already writing.
My father returned to my room.
“She's been detained for questioning.””
“Is she under arrest?””
“Not at this point. The officers are establishing what she knew and whether she participated in the attempted transfer.””
I looked down at Emma.
“Did she really think she could just take her?””
Dad didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
“People who believe they are entitled to something often stop seeing the people they're hurting.””
At 8:30, Amanda arrived with another development.
“The emergency custody application has been reviewed.””
I sat straighter.
“What happened?””
“The judge declined to grant Ethan temporary emergency custody.””
I exhaled.
Amanda continued.
“The court found that the supporting medical statement was disputed and that the application contained material inconsistencies. A hearing will be scheduled, but Ethan has not been granted authority over Emma.””
I felt tears forming.
“So he can't take her?””
“Not on the basis of that filing. And the hospital has its own security protocols in place.””
My father smiled faintly.
For the first time in days, I felt like I could breathe.
Then Amanda's phone rang.
She answered and listened.
Her expression changed.
“What do you mean he left?””
She ended the call.
“Ethan has left the Carter residence.””
“Where is he going?””
“His lawyer says he's heading to the company headquarters.””
My father frowned.
“Why?””
Amanda opened her laptop.
“The board meeting is scheduled for ten o'clock. Victor Langford is attempting to proceed with the proposed transfer.””
I stared at her.
“Even after everything?””
“Apparently, he believes the resolution is still valid.””
Dad stood.
“Then the investigators need to know immediately.””
Major Brooks nodded.
“The relevant civilian authorities are already coordinating with the company's counsel.””
I looked at the clock.
9:02.
My husband was heading to a boardroom to sell a company he had no right to control.
And he was doing it while our newborn daughter was still recovering in a hospital.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Ethan.
You have one chance to stop this before it destroys everyone.
I stared at it.
Then another message arrived.
Tell your father to stay out of the board meeting.
I looked at Amanda.
“Can I send him something?””
She nodded.
I typed slowly.
You should have stayed out of my delivery room. You should have stayed out of my daughter's future. And you should have stayed out of my grandmother's company.
I pressed send.
A moment later, Ethan replied.
You don't know what Victor will do when he loses everything.
I looked at my father.
He read the message.
Then he said quietly:
“Neither does Ethan.””
At 9:17, Amanda received a call from the company secretary.

The board meeting had begun.
And Victor Langford had arrived carrying an original document that he claimed would give him control of Hayes Strategic Holdings.
