Chapter 9: The Man Who Never Stopped Fighting for His Daughter
I looked at Daniel.
He looked at the floor.
Then I looked at the document again.
Daniel Bennett.
My former husband.
The man who had supposedly abandoned Lily.
The man who had disappeared without a goodbye.
The man who had signed the original insurance application.
"Explain," I said.
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
"I can.""
"Then start talking.""
He looked toward Lily.
"Not in front of her.""
I shook my head.
"She has heard enough lies. If this involves her, she deserves the truth.""
Daniel nodded slowly.
Then he began.
"When Vanessa first approached me, she said she wanted to help Lily. She told me Richard had created a trust, but that it couldn't be accessed until Lily turned eighteen.""
I folded my arms.
"And?""
"She offered to arrange an insurance policy that would provide additional protection. She said you would be the primary guardian and I would be the beneficiary.""
"Why would you be the beneficiary?""
"Because we were still married at the time. She said it was standard.""
I stared at him.
"You believed her?""
"I was stupid.""
"That's not an answer.""
He looked down.
"I was struggling financially. Vanessa offered to help me clear some debts. She said the policy was harmless.""
My stomach tightened.
"How much did she pay you?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Twenty thousand dollars.""
I felt sick.
"Twenty thousand dollars?""
He nodded.
I took a step back.
"You sold your daughter's security for twenty thousand dollars?""
"No. Claire, I never wanted anything to happen to Lily.""
"Then why did you take the money?""
"Because I thought I was helping her.""
I shook my head.
"You thought taking money from Vanessa would help our daughter?""
He looked at me helplessly.
"I know how it sounds.""
"It sounds like you were willing to sign anything as long as someone paid you.""
He didn't defend himself.
Martin interrupted.
"Daniel's original beneficiary designation was changed without his knowledge. Patricia submitted a new form, replacing his name with Vanessa's.""
Graham looked at the documents.
"Who witnessed it?""
Martin pointed to the bottom.
"Edward Shaw.""
I remembered the photograph.
The attorney at Lily's birthday party.
"Where is he now?""
Martin shook his head.
"Missing.""
Graham immediately took out his phone.
"I'll contact the investigators.""
Daniel continued.
"When I discovered the beneficiary had been changed, I confronted Vanessa. She told me she'd fix it. Instead, she threatened to accuse me of fraud.""
I stared at him.
"So you left?""
He shook his head.
"No. I tried to take Lily.""
The room went silent.
"What?""
"Two weeks before I disappeared, I went to your apartment. I wanted to tell you everything. But your mother was there.""
My chest tightened.
"What did she do?""
"She told me she had evidence that I had been stealing from the foundation. She said if I contacted you, she'd make sure you lost Lily.""
I remembered that night.
Daniel had come home late.
He'd stood in the kitchen for almost an hour without speaking.
I'd asked him what was wrong.
He'd said he needed time.
The next morning, he was gone.
I had always believed he had simply decided he didn't want us anymore.
"Why didn't you tell me?"" I whispered.
"Because I was scared.""
I stared at him.
"You left your daughter with people who were threatening her.""
"I thought I could fix it from a distance.""
"How?""
He looked toward Martin.
"Richard helped me gather the documents.""
Martin nodded.
"Daniel contacted him after discovering the policy fraud. Richard was already investigating the missing trust money.""
I turned toward him.
"Then why did Dad disappear?""
Martin opened the folder.
"Because Richard discovered that Patricia and Vanessa weren't working alone.""
He placed another photograph on the table.
It showed my mother, Vanessa, Edward Shaw, and a fourth person.
The man standing at the center wore an expensive dark suit.
I recognized him.
Graham's father.
Robert Ellison.
Graham took the photograph.
His expression changed.
"My father?""
Martin nodded.
"He provided the initial funding for several of the companies involved.""
Graham shook his head.
"That's impossible. My father would never steal from his own foundation.""
Martin remained silent.
Graham looked at the photograph again.
"Why was he meeting Patricia?""
"Because he believed Vanessa would eventually marry you and gain access to the remaining accounts.""
Graham's face hardened.
"You're saying my father knew?""
"I'm saying he authorized some of the transfers.""
Graham took several steps backward.
For the first time that evening, he looked genuinely lost.
"My father built that foundation after my mother died.""
Martin nodded.
"And Richard discovered that a significant portion of its assets had been diverted.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"That's why he contacted me.""
I turned toward him.
"What happened next?""
"Richard planned to meet me in Providence. He wanted to hand over the original documents and arrange protection for you and Lily.""
"But he never came.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Someone got there first.""
Martin opened the folder.
Inside was a police incident report.
It described a car found abandoned near a highway outside Providence.
The driver's identity was listed as unknown.
But attached to the report was a photograph of a wallet.
My father's wallet.
I covered my mouth.
"Was he in the car?""
Martin looked at me.
"No.""
"Then where is he?""
"We don't know.""
I felt a fragile spark of hope.
"He's alive?""
"His last confirmed communication was two weeks ago.""
I stared at him.
"Two weeks?""
Martin nodded.
"He sent me a message saying he had found the person responsible for the forged documents.""
Graham leaned forward.
"Who?""
Martin took out his phone.
He showed us a screenshot of the message.
There were only a few words.
*I finally know who signed the original authorization. It wasn't Patricia. It wasn't Vanessa. It was someone inside my own family.*
Graham stared at the screen.
"Who inside your family?""
Martin shook his head.
"Richard never sent the name.""
Then my phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But the message contained a photograph.
My father was sitting in a small room, holding a newspaper dated that morning.
Beneath the photograph were seven words.
*Claire, don't trust Martin. He knows where I am.*
I looked up.
Martin was standing directly in front of me.
His face had changed.
He saw the message on my screen.
Then he slowly closed the blue folder.
"Claire," he said quietly, "I can explain.""
Before I could respond, the ballroom doors opened again.
Two men in dark suits entered.
One walked directly toward Graham.
The other approached Martin.
And behind them came a familiar voice.
"Well, this is quite a wedding.""
Graham went completely still.
"Dad?""
Robert Ellison smiled.
Then he looked at Lily.
"Hello, sweetheart. It's been a long time.""
My daughter immediately hid behind me.
And I finally understood why my father had written that nobody in this family could be trusted.
Robert wasn't just Graham's father.
May you like
He was the man who had signed Lily's original insurance application.
And he was carrying a second copy of the blue folder.
