Chapter 3: The Secret My Family Buried

Nobody spoke.

The ballroom seemed to have shrunk around me.

I held the photograph in one hand and Lily's trembling fingers in the other.

Daniel.

My ex-husband.

The man who had walked out of our apartment one rainy evening and never returned.

The man who had left Lily sitting beside the window for hours, waiting for a father who never came.

"What is this?"" I whispered.

Vanessa shook her head.

"Claire, don't.""

I looked at her.

"Don't what?""

"Don't believe everything you see.""

I held up the photograph.

"Is that Daniel?""

She looked away.

That was answer enough.

Graham approached.

"Claire, did you know your ex-husband was involved with Vanessa?""

"No.""

My voice barely worked.

"Absolutely not.""

My mother stepped between us.

"This family has endured enough embarrassment tonight.""

I turned toward her.

"Did you know?""

She adjusted her necklace.

"Claire, there are things you don't understand.""

"Then explain them.""

"Not here.""

"Where? In another room where everyone can pretend nothing happened?""

My mother lowered her voice.

"Your sister has worked very hard for this life. Don't destroy it because of an old relationship.""

I stared at her.

"An old relationship?""

She sighed.

"Daniel was never a good husband. Everyone knew that.""

"Then why was he meeting Vanessa?""

She didn't answer.

Graham looked toward the DJ.

"How many files are on that drive?""

Lily raised her hand slightly.

"Three.""

Vanessa lunged toward the platform.

"That's enough!""

I stepped in front of my daughter.

"Touch her again, and we're calling the police.""

My sister stopped.

Her face twisted.

"You wouldn't dare.""

"Try me.""

For the first time in years, I didn't lower my eyes when Vanessa challenged me.

Graham turned to Lily.

"Sweetheart, can you show us the next video?""

Lily looked at me.

I nodded.

The DJ opened the second file.

The screen flickered.

A familiar room appeared.

My bedroom.

I recognized the blue curtains, the old wooden dresser, and the framed photograph of Lily as a baby.

I felt physically sick.

The camera angle was low, as if someone had placed a phone behind a stack of books.

A door opened.

Daniel walked into the room.

He looked thinner than I remembered.

His hair was longer, and he wore the gray coat from the photograph.

He placed a folder on my dresser.

Then he spoke.

"Vanessa, I can't keep doing this.""

The camera shifted.

My sister entered the room.

She looked younger, but her expression was unmistakable.

"You're being dramatic.""

Daniel shook his head.

"You told me Claire would never find out.""

"She won't.""

"She's my wife, Vanessa. And Lily is my daughter.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Then perhaps you should have remembered that before you started asking for money.""

My breath caught.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"You said it was temporary.""

"It was.""

"Two years, Vanessa. Two years of transferring money from Graham's family company. How much more do you need?""

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Graham went completely still.

Vanessa looked at him.

"That's not what it sounds like.""

On the screen, Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Your mother knows?""

Vanessa nodded.

"She helped arrange everything.""

I turned toward my mother.

She had gone pale.

The video continued.

Daniel picked up the folder.

"I have copies of the transfers. If Graham discovers what you've done, you're finished.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Don't threaten me.""

"I'm not threatening you. I'm telling you I'm done.""

She grabbed his sleeve.

"You can't leave now.""

Daniel pulled away.

"I've already lost my marriage. I won't lose my daughter too.""

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"Then perhaps you should think carefully about who gets custody.""

Daniel stared at her.

"What?""

Vanessa smiled.

"Claire is struggling financially. She has a small apartment and a teacher's salary. You have a lawyer.

I have a lawyer. And Mother will support me.""

My knees weakened.

My mother had known.

She had known that Vanessa was involved in my marriage falling apart.

On the screen, Daniel looked toward the camera.

For a second, I wondered whether he knew he was being recorded.

Then he said something that made the room go completely silent.

"Claire doesn't know what happened to the money, does she?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No. And she never will.""

Daniel's face hardened.

"She deserves the truth.""

"She deserves to stop being a victim.""

Vanessa picked up the folder.

"You're leaving town tomorrow. You won't contact Claire or Lily again. In exchange, I'll make sure your part in this stays buried.""

Daniel looked horrified.

"You're asking me to abandon my daughter.""

"I'm giving you a choice.""

The recording ended.

I couldn't breathe.

My mother rushed toward me.

"Claire, please. Let me explain.""

I stepped backward.

"Stay away from me.""

"You're misunderstanding what happened.""

"Did you know Daniel was being paid to disappear?""

She shook her head too quickly.

"It wasn't like that.""

"Then what was it like?""

She looked toward Vanessa.

My sister was crying now.

But not the kind of crying she had done during her wedding vows.

These were angry tears.

"That video was stolen!"" Vanessa shouted.

"You can't use it against me!""

Graham stared at her.

"Did you take money from my family's foundation?""

"No.""

"Did you meet Daniel?""

"Yes, but—"

"Did you arrange for him to leave Claire and Lily?""

Vanessa said nothing.

Graham removed his wedding ring.

It was still new, a polished gold band he had been wearing for barely an hour.

He placed it on the head table.

"I need you to tell me the truth.""

Vanessa grabbed his wrist.

"Baby, listen. I did everything because I wanted a future with you.""

"You destroyed another family to build ours?""

"I was desperate!""

Graham looked at her with disbelief.

"You told me you had never met Daniel.""

"I lied.""

The admission echoed through the ballroom.

My mother began crying.

"Vanessa, stop talking.""

But Vanessa had lost control.

She pointed at me.

"She always had everything!""

I stared at her.

"Everything?""

"You had Daniel. You had a child. You had a normal life. And somehow you still made everyone feel sorry for you!""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"You arranged for my husband to abandon our daughter because you were jealous?""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"I wanted what you had.""

I looked at Lily.

My little girl had spent eighteen months asking why her father didn't call.

Eighteen months believing she wasn't worth staying for.

I had sat beside her bed and invented explanations because I couldn't bear to tell her the truth.

And all that time, my own sister had known exactly where Daniel was.

My mother had known too.

Graham walked toward the screen.

"There's something else on that drive, isn't there?""

Lily nodded.

"The last video.""

Vanessa's head snapped toward her.

"No. Absolutely not.""

Graham looked at Lily.

"Can we watch it?""

Lily hesitated.

Then she looked at me.

I knelt beside her.

"Sweetheart, you don't have to show anyone anything you're uncomfortable with.""

She swallowed.

"But you need to know why Dad left.""

I felt tears fill my eyes.

"Why?""

She reached into her pocket and produced a tiny folded note.

"I found this taped under the laptop.""

I opened it.

The handwriting was Daniel's.

There were only two sentences.

*Claire, if Lily ever finds this recording, tell her I never stopped loving her.*

*And tell her the man who paid Vanessa to destroy our family wasn't Graham.*

My heart stopped.

I looked toward the screen.

Lily pressed the final video.

The image appeared.

A familiar voice spoke from somewhere outside the camera's view.

And when the person stepped into the light, my mother let out a scream.

It was the last person I expected to see.

May you like

My father.

The man my family had told me was dead for six years.
