Chapter 12: My Father Finally Came Home

The police took Robert Ellison into custody that night.

But the document he had left behind changed the direction of everything.

Martin explained that the second trust agreement had been created as a contingency arrangement. If Lily disappeared, control of her inheritance would temporarily transfer to an appointed guardian.

That guardian was Edward Shaw.

The same attorney who had helped Patricia change the insurance beneficiary.

The same man who had vanished before the wedding.

And the same man who apparently had three days left to activate the agreement.

Graham immediately contacted his family's attorneys.

Daniel called the Providence police.

I held Lily's hand and tried to make sense of what was happening.

"Mom?""

I looked down.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Does this mean someone wants to take me?""

I knelt.

"No one is taking you anywhere.""

"Promise?""

I held her face.

"Promise.""

But I knew I needed to find Edward Shaw.

And I needed to find my father.

Before midnight, Martin received a call.

He listened, then looked at me.

"Richard is safe.""

My knees nearly gave way.

"Where?""

"Providence. The police found him at the storage facility.""

I started crying.

"Can I see him?""

Martin nodded.

"They're bringing him here.""

I didn't wait.

I walked toward the entrance with Lily beside me.

Daniel followed.

Graham stayed behind to speak with the officers.

The rain had stopped outside.

The driveway glittered beneath the estate's golden lights. Wedding guests had mostly left, leaving abandoned flower arrangements and overturned champagne glasses.

Then a dark sedan pulled into the driveway.

The rear door opened.

And my father stepped out.

For a moment, I couldn't move.

He looked older than he had in the videos.

His shoulders were narrower. His hair was almost completely white.

But he was alive.

"Claire?""

His voice broke.

I ran.

He caught me in his arms.

I buried my face against his chest and cried like the little girl who had once waited by the window for him to come home.

"Dad.""

He held me tightly.

"Oh, sweetheart.""

I pulled away.

"Why didn't you come back?""

His eyes filled.

"I tried.""

"You let me believe you were dead.""

"I know.""

"You let me spend six years thinking I'd never see you again.""

He lowered his head.

"I was afraid they'd hurt you.""

"Who?""

He looked toward the estate.

"Your mother. Vanessa. Robert. They had too much control, and I had too little evidence.""

I wiped my face.

"You could have called.""

"I sent letters. I sent messages. I even went to your apartment.""

I remembered the photograph.

The flowers.

The date.

"Mom wouldn't let you inside.""

He nodded.

"She told me you didn't want to see me.""

I stared at him.

"She lied.""

"I know that now.""

Lily stepped out from behind me.

My father looked down.

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

Then he crouched.

"Hello, beautiful.""

Lily studied his face.

"Are you really Grandpa?""

He laughed through tears.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

"Mom said you were dead.""

My father looked at me.

I swallowed.

"Grandpa was trying to come home.""

Lily walked toward him.

"Did you bring me a present?""

He smiled.

"I did.""

He reached into his coat and pulled out a small wooden box.

Inside was a silver bracelet with a tiny heart-shaped charm.

"I bought this for your fifth birthday," he said.

"I kept it all these years.""

Lily touched the charm.

"It's pretty.""

"I was hoping I'd get to give it to you someday.""

She threw her arms around his neck.

My father closed his eyes.

I had never seen him cry like that.

Daniel stood a few feet away.

My father looked up.

"Daniel.""

"Richard.""

For a moment, neither man spoke.

Then my father stood.

"You tried to protect them.""

Daniel nodded.

"I failed.""

My father shook his head.

"You made mistakes. But you came back.""

Daniel looked at Lily.

"I don't expect her to forgive me.""

My father placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Then don't ask her to. Show her you're worth trusting.""

Daniel nodded.

I wasn't ready to forgive him.

Not yet.

But I appreciated that he didn't demand it.

We returned to the ballroom.

Graham was waiting beside the head table.

He approached my father immediately.

"Mr. Bennett, I'm glad you're safe.""

My father shook his hand.

"Thank you.""

Graham looked exhausted.

"My father has done terrible things.""

"I know.""

"I don't know how much of the foundation is recoverable.""

My father nodded.

"That will take time.""

Graham looked toward Lily.

"But she shouldn't have to worry about any of it.""

My father smiled.

"That's the first sensible thing I've heard tonight.""

Martin placed the blue folder on the table.

"Richard, we need to discuss Edward Shaw.""

My father immediately became serious.

"Did you find him?""

"No.""

My father's expression tightened.

"Then we have a problem.""

I stepped forward.

"What do you know about him?""

Richard looked at me.

"Edward was the person who prepared the insurance documents. He also created the forged trust amendment.""

"Why would he help them?""

"Because he was being paid.""

"By Robert?""

My father shook his head.

"Initially, yes. But later, he began taking money from Patricia and Vanessa too.""

I stared.

"So everyone was paying him?""

"Not everyone.""

My father removed a folded letter from his coat.

"This was delivered to me two days ago.""

He handed it to Martin.

Martin opened it.

His face changed immediately.

"What?""

My father looked at me.

"Edward wants to meet Lily.""

My blood turned cold.

"No.""

"Claire, listen.""

"No. Absolutely not.""

My father nodded.

"I agree. But there's something else.""

He pointed to the bottom of the letter.

Edward had written:

*I have the original video of Rachel's final conversation. If you want to know who was responsible for her death, bring the girl to the old Ellison residence. Come alone.*

Graham stared.

"Rachel's final conversation?""

My father nodded.

"That's the evidence we've been missing.""

I looked at Lily.

She was sitting beside Daniel, playing with her new bracelet.

I would never put her in danger for a piece of evidence.

"You're not taking Lily anywhere," I said.

My father placed a hand on my shoulder.

"I wouldn't ask you to.""

Graham looked at the letter.

"Then we'll go to him.""

Martin shook his head.

"That's exactly what he wants.""

My father nodded.

"Which is why we're not going to the old residence.""

He reached into his pocket and produced a second envelope.

"I have something Edward doesn't know about.""

Inside was a small memory card.

"What's that?"" I asked.

"The original recording of Rachel's final conversation.""

Graham stared.

"How did you get it?""

My father looked toward Martin.

"Because Rachel gave it to me three days before she died.""

The room fell silent.

"Why didn't you tell anyone?"" Graham asked.

"Because I didn't know who I could trust.""

He placed the memory card on the table.

Then he looked directly at Graham.

"Your sister didn't die because she discovered the missing money.""

Graham's face went pale.

"Then why?""

My father took a breath.

"Because she discovered that Robert Ellison wasn't the mastermind.""

He paused.

"He was protecting someone much more powerful.""

I looked at the memory card.

"Who?""

My father opened the envelope and removed a photograph.

It showed Rachel sitting in a hospital room.

Beside her was a woman wearing a nurse's uniform.

I recognized her immediately.

She had been at Vanessa's wedding.

She had served champagne to the guests.

She had even taken a photograph with my mother.

My father whispered her name.

"Patricia Bennett.""

I stared.

"Mom?""

He nodded.

"Your mother was the last person Rachel spoke to before she died.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"Are you saying Mom killed her?""

My father looked down.

"I'm saying Rachel recorded their conversation.""

He inserted the memory card into the laptop.

The screen flickered.

A hospital room appeared.

Rachel was lying in bed.

My mother sat beside her, holding her hand.

Then Rachel spoke.

"Mom, I know what you did.""

Patricia leaned closer.

And her reply made Graham stagger backward.

May you like

"Then you know why I can't let you leave this hospital.""

*The recording continued.*
