Chapter 10: The Groom's Father Had a Different Plan

"Hello, sweetheart. It's been a long time.""

Robert Ellison's voice was warm, almost affectionate.

But Lily immediately hid behind my legs.

I felt her fingers clutch the fabric of my dress.

"Mom, I don't like him.""

I bent down and whispered, "You don't have to go near him.""

Robert smiled as if he hadn't heard her.

"Children are remarkably sensitive, aren't they?""

Graham stepped between us.

"Dad, what are you doing here?""

Robert adjusted his cufflinks.

"Attending my son's wedding. Or what's left of it.""

"You're not welcome.""

His smile disappeared.

"Careful, Graham. You're making accusations without understanding the situation.""

Graham pointed toward the screen.

"Two million dollars disappeared from your foundation. My fiancée was involved. My sister died investigating it. And now you're standing here holding documents connected to an insurance policy on an eight-year-old child.""

Robert sighed.

"That's quite a dramatic summary.""

"It's an accurate one.""

Robert turned toward Martin.

"Have you been filling everyone's heads with stories again?""

Martin didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at the two men accompanying Robert.

"Are those your security personnel?""

Robert smiled.

"They're here to ensure nobody makes a foolish decision.""

One of the men moved toward the DJ booth.

Graham immediately raised his voice.

"Don't touch that computer.""

The man stopped.

Robert removed a thick blue folder from beneath his arm.

"I believe everyone is interested in the truth. So let's discuss it.""

He placed the folder on the head table.

My mother was gone with the police. Vanessa was being questioned by another officer near the entrance. Daniel stood beside me, looking as though he hadn't slept properly in months.

Robert opened the folder.

"Richard Bennett was a troubled man. He made financial promises he couldn't keep. When he discovered the foundation's investment losses, he panicked.""

Martin shook his head.

"That's not what happened.""

Robert ignored him.

"Richard approached me and asked for assistance. I agreed to help him reorganize several accounts.""

Graham laughed bitterly.

"You transferred charitable funds into private companies.""

"Temporary investment vehicles.""

"Without authorization?""

Robert looked at his son.

"You're a lawyer, Graham. You should understand that financial arrangements are complicated.""

Graham stepped closer.

"I understand fraud.""

Robert's jaw tightened.

Then he turned toward me.

"Claire, I understand you've suffered a great deal. Your marriage collapsed. Your father disappeared. Your sister made terrible decisions.""

"Don't pretend you care about my suffering.""

He smiled.

"I care about Lily.""

My stomach tightened.

"Don't say her name.""

Robert opened the folder and removed a document.

"This is a trust agreement established by Richard. It contains provisions regarding Lily's future.""

Martin reached for it.

Robert pulled it away.

"Careful. This document is worth considerably more than your opinion.""

He turned the page toward me.

There was my daughter's name.

Lily Bennett.

Beneath it was a financial figure.

Five million dollars.

I stared at the document.

"What is this?""

"An educational and medical trust. Richard wanted Lily to have a secure future.""

Martin nodded.

"That's genuine.""

Robert smiled.

"However, the trust contains a condition. If Claire cannot act as Lily's legal guardian, control transfers to the appointed trustee.""

I looked at him.

"Who is the trustee?""

Robert slowly placed another document on the table.

His own name.

I felt sick.

"You arranged this?""

"Richard signed the original agreement.""

"Why would he appoint you?""

"Because he trusted me.""

Martin finally laughed.

"That's a lie.""

Robert turned sharply.

"Watch your mouth.""

Martin took a step forward.

"Richard appointed an independent trustee. Your name was added later.""

Robert's smile vanished.

Graham took the document.

"Who authorized the amendment?""

Robert said nothing.

Graham examined the signature.

Then he looked at his father.

"This isn't Dad's signature.""

Robert's eyes narrowed.

"Don't be ridiculous.""

"I've signed enough contracts with you to recognize your handwriting.""

For the first time, Robert looked uncomfortable.

Then Daniel spoke.

"That's because the original document is in the storage facility.""

Robert turned toward him.

"Daniel Bennett. I wondered when you'd appear.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"You remember me?""

"I remember everyone who causes trouble.""

Daniel took a step forward.

"Then you'll remember what happened when you threatened my daughter.""

Robert laughed.

"Your daughter? You abandoned her.""

Daniel didn't respond immediately.

Then he said quietly, "I made a terrible mistake. But I never stopped trying to protect her.""

Robert shrugged.

"That distinction won't matter in court.""

Graham looked at his father.

"Did you know about the insurance policy?""

Robert adjusted his tie.

"I knew Vanessa was arranging financial protection.""

"On Lily's life?""

"That is an ugly way to describe a legitimate product.""

Graham looked horrified.

"You signed it?""

Robert remained silent.

I stepped forward.

"Why?""

He looked at me with cold indifference.

"Because your father created a substantial financial asset in Lily's name. Someone needed to ensure that asset remained protected.""

"Protected from whom?""

"From people who couldn't manage money.""

I stared at him.

"You mean me?""

He didn't answer.

Robert continued.

"Claire, you're a schoolteacher. You live in a modest apartment. You have no experience managing significant assets. Lily deserves someone capable of protecting her inheritance.""

I felt my hands shake.

"She deserves a childhood.""

He gave a small shrug.

"Children don't understand financial realities.""

Lily stepped out from behind me.

"Yes, I do.""

Everyone turned.

She looked directly at Robert.

"I know when people are lying.""

His smile disappeared.

Lily continued.

"You told Aunt Vanessa that nobody would believe Mom because she didn't have money.""

Robert's face changed.

I looked down at my daughter.

"Sweetheart, when did you hear that?""

"At our apartment. He came with Aunt Vanessa.""

Robert stared at her.

Lily pointed at the folder.

"He also said that if Mom didn't sign the papers, they would take me away.""

The room went silent.

Robert's security men exchanged glances.

Graham turned slowly toward his father.

"Did you threaten a child?""

Robert's expression hardened.

"She's confused.""

"No," Lily said quietly.

"I'm not.""

She reached into her little handbag and pulled out a small pink notebook.

"I wrote it down.""

My heart stopped.

Robert stared at the notebook.

"Where did you get that?""

Lily opened it.

"Grandpa told me to write down everything I heard.""

She turned to a page.

There were dates, times, and short sentences written in a child's careful handwriting.

I read one.

*Mr. Ellison said Mommy must sign the papers before Friday. Otherwise, he would make sure Lily goes somewhere else.*

Graham took the notebook.

His face became pale.

"Dad?""

Robert's composure finally cracked.

"Give me that.""

Graham stepped away.

"No.""

Robert's voice turned sharp.

"You're making a mistake.""

Graham looked at him.

"For the first time in my life, I think I'm making the right one.""

Then Martin's phone rang.

He answered, listened for several seconds, and turned toward me.

"Claire, we have a problem.""

"What?""

"Someone just entered the storage facility in Providence.""

My heart began pounding.

"Who?""

Martin looked at the photograph on his phone.

It showed a man standing beside the facility entrance.

My father.

May you like

And beneath the photograph was a message.

*He isn't alone.*
