Chapter 8: Five Million Dollars on My Daughter's Life

I had spent eighteen months believing Daniel had abandoned Lily because he didn't want to be a father.

Now I was standing in a ballroom learning that my own family had taken out a five-million-dollar insurance policy on my eight-year-old daughter.

My daughter.

The little girl who still slept with a stuffed rabbit.

The little girl who cried when she saw injured birds.

The little girl who had been brave enough to walk into a room full of adults and expose a secret that everyone had tried to bury.

I turned toward Vanessa.

"Why?""

She wiped her face.

"Claire, it wasn't what you think.""

"Then explain it.""

She looked at our mother.

Patricia shook her head.

Vanessa's voice trembled.

"Mom said it was a family investment.""

"A family investment?""

"She said the policy was just protection. Something that would benefit everyone.""

"Why was Lily the insured person?""

Vanessa looked away.

I stepped closer.

"Why my daughter?""

She finally exploded.

"Because your father put everything in her name!""

The room fell silent.

I stared at her.

"What?""

Vanessa pointed toward Martin.

"Richard changed his trust documents before he disappeared. He left the remaining assets to Lily.""

Martin nodded slowly.

"That's correct.""

I felt my knees weaken.

"Why?""

"Richard believed Lily deserved a secure future. He wanted to ensure she would never experience the financial insecurity you had endured.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"So while I was working to build my life, everything was being handed to her!""

I stared at my sister.

"She's eight.""

"Exactly! She didn't even know what she had!""

"She's your niece!""

Vanessa looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

"I was supposed to be the one who inherited everything.""

My mother suddenly interrupted.

"Vanessa, stop talking.""

But my sister was beyond stopping.

"Do you know what it's like growing up knowing your father loved Claire more? Everything was always about Claire. Claire's future.

Claire's education. Claire's happiness.""

I shook my head.

"You had everything, Vanessa.""

"No! I had to earn everything.""

"You got the house, the car, the private school, the vacations. I worked through college.""

"And you still got the trust!""

"I didn't even know it existed!""

Vanessa pointed at Lily.

"Because he gave it to her!""

Graham stepped forward.

"Vanessa, you are talking about a child.""

She turned toward him.

"Don't pretend you understand.""

"I understand that you took out an insurance policy on an eight-year-old girl and changed the beneficiary to yourself.""

Vanessa's face tightened.

"It was legal.""

"Was it?""

Graham took the policy from Martin.

"Did Claire authorize this?""

Silence.

"Did Daniel?""

Nothing.

Graham examined the signature page.

"Then it wasn't legal.""

My mother suddenly started sobbing.

"Vanessa was desperate. She had debts. She was frightened.""

I turned toward her.

"What debts?""

Patricia looked at the floor.

Martin answered.

"Vanessa owed nearly six hundred thousand dollars to private lenders. Her boutique business had failed, and she had been hiding the losses.""

Vanessa screamed.

"Shut up!""

Martin continued.

"She was receiving threatening letters. She believed marrying Graham would solve everything.""

Graham's expression was cold.

"So you married me for my money.""

"I loved you!""

"You lied about your finances, your family, and your involvement with my sister.""

Vanessa grabbed his hand.

"Please. We can fix this.""

He stepped away.

"The wedding is over.""

She stared at him.

"What?""

"I'm not marrying you.""

"You can't do this!""

Graham looked at the gold ring on the table.

"I already did.""

A police officer approached Vanessa.

"Ma'am, we need you to accompany us for questioning.""

She jerked away.

"I'm not going anywhere!""

The officer remained calm.

"Please cooperate.""

Vanessa turned toward me.

"This is your fault!""

I stared at her.

"You threatened my daughter.""

"I never intended to hurt her!""

"Then why did you take out the policy?""

She looked at Patricia.

My mother stepped forward.

"Claire, please listen. Vanessa needed help. I was trying to keep the family together.""

I laughed.

"You kept the family together by destroying mine?""

My mother reached for me.

"You're still my daughter.""

I moved away.

"And Lily is still your granddaughter.""

She began crying harder.

I didn't care.

Not anymore.

Then Martin cleared his throat.

"There is something else about the policy.""

Graham turned.

"What?""

"The policy was issued six months after Lily's fourth birthday. But the original application contained a medical declaration that was never signed by Claire.""

"Who signed it?"" I asked.

Martin looked uncomfortable.

"Daniel.""

I turned toward my ex-husband.

He lowered his head.

"Claire, I didn't know what Vanessa was planning.""

"Why did you sign it?""

He looked at Lily.

"Because Vanessa told me it was a savings policy. She said the money would be available for Lily's education.""

I stared at him.

"You signed a life insurance policy on our daughter without telling me?""

"I know.""

"You knew nothing about it?""

"I knew there was a policy. I didn't know the beneficiary had been changed.""

Martin nodded.

"Daniel's signature was obtained through deception. He was told the policy was intended to secure Lily's future.""

Graham looked at the paperwork.

"Who changed the beneficiary?""

Martin turned another page.

There was a signature.

Patricia Bennett.

My mother had authorized the change.

I looked at her.

She was no longer crying.

She was staring at the floor, her mouth trembling.

"Why?"" I whispered.

She finally raised her eyes.

"Because I thought it would save Vanessa.""

I shook my head.

"You were willing to gamble with Lily's life to save your favorite daughter?""

Patricia began to speak.

But the police officer interrupted.

"Mrs. Bennett, we need you to come with us.""

She looked at me one last time.

"Claire, you have to understand. I did everything for my children.""

I held Lily tighter.

"No, Mom. You did everything for Vanessa.""

As the officers escorted her away, my daughter whispered something.

"Mom?""

I crouched.

"What is it?""

"Can we go home now?""

I kissed her forehead.

"Yes, sweetheart. We're going home.""

But before we could leave, Martin stepped in front of us.

"Claire, you can't go yet.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

He opened the blue folder and removed a document that hadn't been shown before.

It was a letter written by my father.

The date was from two weeks earlier.

And the first line made my heart stop.

*Claire, if you've finally seen the truth, there's one more thing you must know. Vanessa wasn't the person who changed Lily's insurance policy.*

I looked up.

"Martin, what does that mean?""

He turned toward Daniel.

Daniel's face had gone completely pale.

Then Martin said:

"The original beneficiary was never Vanessa.""

May you like

He pointed to the final page.

The name written there was Daniel Bennett.
