Chapter 2: The Woman Who Wasn't Supposed to Exist

The video was shaky.

At first, the ballroom saw only a dark hallway and a partially open door.

Then a woman's voice came through the speakers.

"Did you bring the documents?""

My entire body stiffened.

I knew that voice.

Vanessa.

A second voice answered.

"Yes. But you said this would be finished before the wedding.""

A woman stepped into view.

She wore a black coat, oversized sunglasses, and a red scarf.

I couldn't see her face clearly.

But Graham could.

He stepped away from the head table.

"Stop.""

The DJ froze.

Graham raised his hand.

"Don't stop the video.""

Vanessa hurried toward the booth.

"This is ridiculous! It's obviously been edited!""

Lily moved away from her.

"Please don't touch the computer.""

Vanessa stopped.

Her eyes narrowed.

"Give me that flash drive.""

"No.""

"Now, Lily!""

My daughter flinched.

I climbed onto the platform and placed myself between them.

"Vanessa, don't you dare speak to her like that.""

My sister stared at me.

For once, she didn't have an immediate insult ready.

The video continued.

The woman in the red scarf removed her sunglasses.

The camera caught her face.

A collective gasp swept across the ballroom.

Graham's expression changed completely.

"Rachel?""

The woman on the screen was someone I had never met.

But Graham apparently knew her.

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"Baby, listen to me.""

He pulled away.

"Why is Rachel on that recording?""

"She's nobody.""

"Nobodies don't usually meet my future wife in secret.""

Vanessa glanced toward the guests.

"Can we discuss this privately?""

Graham pointed at the screen.

"Not until I understand what I'm looking at.""

The woman in the video placed a thick envelope on a table.

Vanessa opened it.

Inside were several photographs.

The camera zoomed in briefly.

I saw Graham's face in one of them.

Then another photograph.

A woman standing outside a hospital.

Then a little boy holding a blue backpack.

I couldn't understand what any of it meant.

But Vanessa's expression told me she knew exactly what was coming.

On the recording, Rachel spoke again.

"His sister is asking questions. She found the old account.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Then make sure she stops.""

"And if she doesn't?""

Vanessa leaned closer.

"Then remind her what happens to people who interfere with my life.""

The video ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Graham turned toward my sister.

"What old account?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"This is a misunderstanding.""

"What account, Vanessa?""

She reached for his hand.

"Rachel was obsessed with you. She wanted to ruin us.""

Graham stepped back.

"Rachel died two years ago.""

The room went silent again.

I felt Lily's fingers close around mine.

Vanessa shook her head.

"Exactly. She was unstable. You know what she was like.""

Graham looked at the screen.

"Rachel was my younger sister.""

I stared at him.

His sister?

The woman in the video had been dead for two years?

Vanessa wiped her cheek.

"She was sick, Graham. She was suspicious of everyone. She imagined things.""

"She told me something before she died.""

Vanessa's lips parted.

Graham continued.

"She said someone had stolen money from our family's charitable foundation. She said she had evidence.""

My stomach tightened.

He turned toward Vanessa.

"You told me she was having another episode.""

"Because she was!""

"Then why were you meeting her?""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"Because she contacted me! She wouldn't leave me alone!""

Graham stared at her.

"She was dead before we met.""

Vanessa froze.

I looked from one to the other.

Something wasn't adding up.

Then my mother rushed forward.

"Enough! This is a wedding, not a courtroom.""

Graham didn't even look at her.

"Patricia, please stay out of this.""

My mother stiffened.

"Excuse me?""

He turned back to the screen.

"Play it again.""

The DJ hesitated.

Vanessa screamed.

"NO!""

Graham's voice hardened.

"Play it.""

The video restarted.

This time, I watched more carefully.

The hallway.

The door.

The red scarf.

The envelope.

And then something caught my eye.

In the lower-right corner of the screen, a date appeared.

March 14.

Three weeks before Vanessa had announced her engagement.

I leaned toward Lily.

"Where did you get this?""

She looked terrified.

"At home.""

"What do you mean?""

She swallowed.

"From the computer.""

"What computer?""

"The old laptop in your bedroom.""

My mind raced.

I had an old laptop stored in the bottom drawer of my desk. It belonged to my former husband, Daniel.

He had left it behind when he moved out.

I hadn't touched it in months.

"How did you know about this video?""

Lily looked toward Vanessa.

"She came to our house.""

My heart stopped.

"Who?""

"The lady in the video.""

I crouched in front of my daughter.

"When?""

"Last Thursday.""

I stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Aunt Vanessa told me not to.""

The words struck harder than any insult my sister had ever thrown at me.

Vanessa stepped toward us.

"Lily, sweetheart, you're confused.""

Lily shook her head.

"You told me Mom would lose her job if I showed anyone.""

My blood turned cold.

I stood.

"What did you tell my daughter?""

Vanessa glanced at the guests.

"Claire, don't make a scene.""

I laughed once, without humor.

"You threatened an eight-year-old?""

"I was trying to protect everyone!""

"From what?""

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Graham moved closer.

"Vanessa, what did you say to Lily?""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"She's a child. Children misunderstand conversations.""

Lily reached into her cardigan pocket again.

This time, she pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"Mom, I kept this too.""

I took it.

It was a printed photograph.

A picture of Vanessa standing outside our apartment building.

Beside her was a man wearing a gray coat.

I recognized him immediately.

My former husband.

Daniel Bennett.

My fingers went numb.

Daniel had disappeared from our lives eighteen months earlier.

He had stopped answering calls, stopped paying child support, and eventually sent a message through his lawyer saying he wanted no further contact.

I had spent months trying to understand why he had abandoned his daughter.

Now his face was standing beside my sister's.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written six words.

*Ask Claire what happened that night.*

I looked up.

Vanessa was staring at me.

Not with embarrassment.

Not with anger.

With fear.

"Where did you get this?"" I whispered.

Lily pointed toward the screen.

"There's another video, Mom.""

Graham turned sharply.

"Another video?""

Lily nodded.

May you like

Then she looked directly at my sister.

"And this one is about Dad.""
