Chapter 11: The Blue Folder Was Only Half the Truth
Martin immediately called the Providence police.
Robert didn't look surprised.
That frightened me more than anything.
"What's happening?"" Graham demanded.
Martin lowered his phone.
"Richard has been located.""
I grabbed his arm.
"Is he alive?""
"Yes.""
"Then where is he?""
"At the storage facility.""
"Why isn't he here?""
Martin hesitated.
"Because someone has been following him.""
Robert adjusted his jacket.
"Perhaps everyone should calm down.""
Graham turned toward him.
"Don't you dare.""
Robert sighed.
"Your father is an elderly man who has been making accusations for years. Perhaps he finally needs help.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Stop pretending you don't know where Richard is.""
Robert looked at him.
"Do you have proof?""
Daniel removed his phone.
"Actually, yes.""
He opened a photograph and showed Graham.
It was a picture of a handwritten note.
The note contained an address and a time.
Beneath it was Robert's signature.
Graham stared.
"What's this?""
Daniel answered.
"A meeting arrangement. Robert asked Richard to come to the storage facility tonight.""
Robert's expression changed.
"That's fabricated.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Richard sent it to me before he disappeared.""
Martin studied the photograph.
"Why would Robert arrange a meeting?""
Daniel looked toward the blue folder.
"Because Richard has the original documents.""
Robert suddenly moved toward the table.
One of his security men followed.
Graham blocked them.
"Nobody touches anything.""
Robert's voice became icy.
"Move.""
"No.""
For several seconds, father and son stared at each other.
Then Robert smiled.
"You really believe these people are your friends?""
Graham didn't answer.
Robert turned toward me.
"Claire, I can offer you something your family never could. Financial security. A comfortable home.
Private education for Lily. Everything she deserves.""
I stared at him.
"How much?""
He raised an eyebrow.
"Excuse me?""
"How much money do you think it takes to make me hand over my daughter?""
His expression hardened.
"Don't be foolish.""
"Then stop making offers.""
I took Lily's hand.
"We're leaving.""
Martin stepped in front of me.
"Wait. There's something you should see.""
He opened the blue folder and removed a small memory card.
"Richard gave me this before he disappeared. He told me not to play it unless the original documents were compromised.""
Graham looked at him.
"What's on it?""
"An interview.""
Martin connected it to the DJ's computer.
The screen flickered.
My father appeared.
He was sitting at a wooden desk, wearing a blue sweater.
He looked tired, but his eyes were clear.
"Claire," he began, "if you're watching this, I'm sorry.""
I covered my mouth.
"I know Patricia told you I was dead. I know Vanessa helped her maintain that lie. But I need you to understand that I didn't leave because I stopped loving you.""
Tears rolled down my cheeks.
My father continued.
"When I discovered the missing money, I confronted Robert. He told me the foundation was being used to finance several private investments. At first, I believed him. Then I discovered that the money wasn't being invested at all.""
He opened a folder.
"Robert had created accounts in the names of several people. One of those names was yours.""
I looked at Graham.
He was watching the screen intently.
My father continued.
"Vanessa was helping him move the money. Patricia was providing access to the family documents. Daniel was recruited to make sure Claire never questioned the transactions.""
Daniel lowered his head.
My father paused.
"But Daniel eventually changed his mind. He contacted me and provided evidence.""
I looked at Daniel.
He was crying silently.
The video continued.
"Then I discovered something that frightened me more than the missing money.""
My father's face tightened.
"The insurance policy on Lily wasn't created to protect her inheritance. It was created to provide a way to control the trust if something happened to her.""
A gasp moved through the ballroom.
My father leaned toward the camera.
"Robert needed control of the trust. He couldn't obtain it while Claire remained Lily's legal guardian. So he arranged for Patricia and Vanessa to create evidence suggesting Claire was financially irresponsible.""
I felt sick.
My father continued.
"The plan was to have Claire declared incapable of managing Lily's inheritance. Vanessa would then become the appointed guardian, with Robert controlling the money through a private agreement.""
Graham stared at his father.
"That's impossible.""
My father looked directly into the camera.
"There is one more thing, Claire. The original trust agreement contains a provision that Robert never discovered.""
He paused.
"Only Lily can decide who controls the inheritance when she reaches the age specified in the trust. Until then, an independent trustee must protect her interests.""
Martin nodded.
"That's why Robert forged the amendment.""
My father continued.
"Claire, I don't want you to trust anyone simply because they share your last name. I made that mistake. I trusted Patricia.
I trusted Robert. I believed Vanessa could still be saved.""
He looked down.
"I was wrong.""
The screen went black.
I stood there crying.
For years, I had believed my father had abandoned me.
Now I understood that he had been fighting to protect us.
But he had also made mistakes.
And those mistakes had cost me eighteen months with Daniel and years of believing my father was dead.
Graham turned toward Robert.
"Tell me the video is fake.""
Robert remained silent.
"Tell me!""
Robert finally spoke.
"Your grandfather's generation never understood how wealth works.""
Graham stared at him.
"That's your defense?""
"Everything I did was to protect the family.""
"By threatening an eight-year-old?""
Robert's jaw tightened.
"By ensuring that money remained where it belonged.""
Graham shook his head.
"It belonged to Lily.""
Robert looked toward me.
"Claire doesn't have the ability to manage it.""
I stepped forward.
"Then perhaps you should have spent more time teaching me instead of trying to destroy me.""
Robert laughed coldly.
"You've always been emotional.""
I stared at him.
"And you've always mistaken kindness for weakness.""
A police officer approached.
"Mr. Ellison, we'd like you to accompany us.""
Robert glanced at his security men.
Neither moved.
Then he turned toward Graham.
"Are you really going to let them arrest your father?""
Graham looked devastated.
But he answered.
"Yes.""
Robert's smile disappeared.
As the officers approached, he suddenly reached into his jacket.
One of them shouted.
"Hands where I can see them!""
Robert froze.
He wasn't holding a weapon.
He was holding a small envelope.
He dropped it onto the table.
"Before you arrest me," he said, "you should read that.""
Martin opened it carefully.
Inside was a document with a hospital letterhead.
Graham took it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he looked at me.
"Claire, this changes everything.""
"What?""
He swallowed.
"The insurance policy wasn't the only thing taken out in Lily's name.""
He turned the document toward me.
It was a second trust agreement.
And this one contained a clause transferring control of Lily's inheritance to someone else if she was ever declared missing.
I looked at the signature.
It belonged to my father.
But beneath it was another name.
Edward Shaw.
The attorney who had disappeared.
May you like
And at the bottom of the page was a date.
Three days from now.
