Chapter 6: The Man Behind Vanessa

Daniel Whitmore stood in the middle of the living room like he owned the place.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not his expensive jacket.

Not the confident smile.

The way he looked around.

Like this house belonged to him.

Security guards surrounded him, but Daniel didn’t look nervous.

He looked amused.

James walked forward.

“You’re supposed to be in police custody.””

Daniel smiled.

“Temporary inconvenience.””

Detective Collins stepped between them.

“Mr. Whitmore, you need to explain why you entered this property.””

Daniel looked at her.

Then at me.

And smiled wider.

“There she is.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

He tilted his head.

“The housekeeper.””

James immediately stepped closer.

“Watch your words.””

Daniel laughed.

“Still protecting her?””

His eyes moved toward me.

“You really don’t know what she found, do you?””

I felt everyone’s attention shift.

James looked at me.

“What is he talking about?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel smiled.

“That’s the problem. Emily knows pieces. Vanessa knows pieces. But nobody knows the whole story.””

Detective Collins crossed her arms.

“Then tell us.””

Daniel looked at James.

“I think you deserve the truth.””

James’s face hardened.

“You have five seconds.””

Daniel ignored the threat.

“Your first wife wasn’t the only person who knew about your company secrets.””

The room became silent.

My heart stopped.

James’s first wife.

Sophie’s mother.

Daniel continued.

“Before she died, she discovered something about your business partners.””

James’s expression changed.

“Don’t talk about her.””

“Why? Because you never asked questions?””

Detective Collins immediately interrupted.

“Careful.””

But James wasn’t listening.

“What does this have to do with Vanessa?””

Daniel smiled.

“Everything.””

I looked at him.

“You’re lying.””

He turned toward me.

“Am I?””

His eyes were cold.

“Then why did Vanessa spend months looking for the documents your first wife hid?””

James went completely still.

“What documents?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at me.

“Tell him, Emily.””

My heart raced.

“I don’t know what you mean.””

“Yes, you do.””

The room felt smaller.

Daniel stepped closer.

“The envelope.””

James looked at me.

Again.

The same question in his eyes.

The same confusion.

Daniel smiled.

“You found it.””

I said nothing.

Because I knew.

The envelope.

The photograph.

The hidden message I had never seen.

There had been something else inside.

Something I had ignored.

A small piece of paper folded behind the photograph.

I had never opened it.

Because it didn’t belong to me.

But Daniel knew.

And Vanessa knew.

James whispered:

“Emily…”

I looked at him.

“I didn’t know what it was.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“That’s the part they counted on.””

Detective Collins looked between us.

“What was inside the envelope?””

Nobody answered.

Because the truth was suddenly standing in front of us.

And I realized Vanessa’s entire plan had never been about Sophie.

It had never been about removing me from the house.

It was about one thing.

Finding what James’s first wife had hidden before she died.

Daniel reached into his pocket.

Every security guard moved instantly.

But he only pulled out a small photograph.

He placed it on the table.

James picked it up.

The color drained from his face.

Because in the picture was his late wife.

Standing beside someone.

Someone James recognized immediately.

Someone who should never have been there.

James whispered one name.

May you like

And the entire room froze.

“Vanessa.””
