Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Camera
The room went silent.
Not the normal kind of silence.
The kind that comes when everyone realizes something has changed.
James stared at the tablet.
Then at Vanessa.
Then back at the screen.
“Who is that person?”” Detective Collins asked.
Nobody answered.
Because Vanessa looked like she had forgotten how to speak.
For the first time since I had known her, she looked afraid.
Not sad.
Not offended.
Afraid.
“James,” she whispered, “this is being misunderstood.””
He slowly looked at her.
“Misunderstood?””
His voice was different now.
Colder.
“You just said you needed Emily gone.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You don’t understand the context.””
“Then explain it.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I watched her struggle to create another lie.
But lies are easy when nobody challenges them.
They become much harder when everyone is staring.
Detective Collins took the tablet.
“Let’s watch the rest.””
The video continued.
The unknown person stepped closer to Vanessa.
The angle was not perfect, but their voice could be heard.
“You’re sure this will work?””
Vanessa answered immediately.
“She’ll take the blame. James already trusts me.””
My hands went cold.
I knew she wanted me gone.
But hearing her say it out loud was different.
It made everything real.
Detective Collins paused the video.
“Mr. Whitmore, do you recognize that voice?””
James didn’t answer.
He was staring at Vanessa.
“Who was that?””
Vanessa’s eyes moved around the room.
Searching.
Looking for an escape.
Then she suddenly pointed at me.
“This is exactly what she wanted.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
“What?””
“She manipulated you,” Vanessa said.
“She found a way to make me look guilty.””
Detective Collins frowned.
“Mrs. Whitmore, the footage appears to show you discussing removing Ms. Carter.””
“You don’t know what we were talking about!””
“Then tell us.””
Vanessa became quiet.
That was her mistake.
Because silence can reveal more than words.
James noticed too.
He had spent years in business negotiations. He knew when someone was hiding something.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
“Who was that person?””
Her face changed.
A small crack appeared.
Then another.
Finally, she whispered:
“My brother.””
I felt a chill.
Her brother?
James looked confused.
“You told me your brother lived overseas.””
“He does.””
“Then why was he here?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Detective Collins took notes.
“Mrs. Whitmore, where is your brother now?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I don’t know.””
That answer made no sense.
And everyone knew it.
A few minutes later, the medical team confirmed Sophie was stable.
The moment I heard that, my knees almost gave out.
I had been holding myself together for hours.
But knowing she was safe finally let the fear catch up with me.
I sat down in the hallway outside Sophie’s room.
James came out quietly.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he sat beside me.
“I owe you an apology.””
I looked at him.
“You believed her.””
“I was scared.””
“So was I.””
He lowered his head.
“You saved my daughter.””
I looked through the glass window at Sophie sleeping.
“I just did what anyone would do.””
“No,” James said softly.
“Not everyone would jump into that pool.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because the truth was, I hadn’t thought about danger.
I had only thought about Sophie.
After a moment, James asked:
“When you said Vanessa never wanted her… how long did you know?””
I hesitated.
“Since shortly after the wedding.””
His face tightened.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
I looked at him.
“Would you have believed me?””
He didn’t answer.
Because we both knew the truth.
The next morning, the police returned with new information.
Vanessa’s brother, Daniel, had been found.
And he wasn’t just a random visitor.
He had a history with James’s company.
A history Vanessa had hidden.
Detective Collins placed a folder on the table.
“Mr. Whitmore, we found something you need to see.””
James opened it.
His expression changed as he read the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
“What is this?””
Detective Collins looked at him.
“Records showing that your wife and her brother had access to confidential information from your company.””
James looked confused.
“Why?””
The detective hesitated.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“Because they weren’t trying to get rid of Sophie.””
She looked at me.
“They were trying to get rid of you before you discovered what they were really planning.””
James turned toward me.
And for the first time since the pool incident, I saw something in his eyes.
Not suspicion.
Not doubt.
Fear.
Because suddenly, the question was no longer whether Vanessa had tried to frame me.

The question was:
What had she been willing to do to protect the secret I was never supposed to find?
