Chapter 5: The Envelope in the Drawer

I had spent months pretending I had forgotten about the envelope.

But some things don’t disappear.

They wait.

I looked at James.

His expression was no longer angry.

It was confused.

“Emily,” he said quietly.

“What envelope?””

I glanced at Sophie.

She was playing with the buttons on my uniform, completely unaware of the tension around her.

I wished I could stay in that moment.

A simple moment.

A safe moment.

But it was already gone.

“It happened three months ago,” I said.

James sat down.

“Tell me.””

I took a breath.

Three months earlier, I had been cleaning James’s home office.

I rarely touched anything on his desk.

James was very organized, and I respected his privacy.

But that afternoon, while dusting a bookshelf, I noticed one of the drawers was slightly open.

Inside was an envelope.

No name.

No label.

Nothing.

I wasn’t trying to read it.

I swear I wasn’t.

But then I saw a photograph sticking out.

A photograph of Vanessa.

Standing beside a man I didn’t recognize.

The man was Daniel.

And they were standing outside James’s company building.

I remember feeling confused.

Because Vanessa had told everyone she had never met Daniel before moving to the city.

Something about it felt wrong.

I put the envelope back.

But before I could close the drawer, Vanessa walked in.

“What are you doing?””

Her voice made me jump.

“I was cleaning.””

She looked at the drawer.

Then at me.

“Did you touch that?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

She stepped closer.

For the first time, I saw fear on her face.

Not anger.

Fear.

“You should learn not to look where you don’t belong.””

I froze.

Then she smiled.

A fake, polite smile.

“I’m sorry. I’m just stressed.””

I left the room.

But I never forgot that moment.

When I finished telling James, he looked stunned.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

I looked away.

“Because I wasn’t sure.””

“You should have told me.””

“Would you have believed me?””

That hurt him.

Because he knew.

He wouldn’t have.

Not then.

Detective Collins returned downstairs.

“Mrs. Whitmore is refusing to answer questions.””

James looked at her.

“Can she do that?””

“For now.””

“Then what?””

Detective Collins looked at me.

“We need your help.””

My eyebrows lifted.

“My help?””

“You may be the only person who knows what Vanessa was searching for.””

I thought about it.

The late-night conversations.

The questions.

The envelope.

Then I remembered something else.

Something that made my stomach twist.

“There was another thing.””

Everyone looked at me.

“Vanessa asked about Sophie’s birth records.””

James stood immediately.

“Why?””

“She said she was organizing family documents.””

Detective Collins narrowed her eyes.

“Did she mention anything specific?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time, there was a photo attached.

My hands went cold.

It was a picture of me.

Taken from outside my apartment.

The message underneath said:

*You should have stayed quiet.*

James saw my face.

“What happened?””

I slowly handed him the phone.

His expression changed instantly.

“Someone is threatening you.””

Detective Collins took the phone.

“This changes things.””

“What does it mean?”” James asked.

She looked at the photo.

“It means whoever Vanessa was working with knows Emily is talking.””

A horrible feeling settled over me.

Because suddenly, I understood.

Vanessa hadn’t just wanted to frame me.

She wanted to silence me.

And whoever was helping her was still out there.

That night, James insisted I stay at the estate.

“You can’t go home.””

“I’ve lived alone for years.””

“Not tonight.””

His voice was firm.

I looked at him.

“You’re worried about me?””

He hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Yes.””

For the first time in days, I believed him.

But just as I was about to go upstairs, the security alarm sounded.

Everyone froze.

A guard’s voice came through the speaker.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

James grabbed the intercom.

“What is it?””

The guard paused.

Then said:

“Someone just entered the property.””

James looked toward the dark windows.

“Who?””

May you like

The guard’s answer made my blood turn cold.

“Your wife’s brother.””
