Chapter 12: The Child Nobody Knew About
The words hung in the air.
A baby.
Nobody moved.
James stared at me.
“What baby?””
I looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
“You saw a baby?””
“In the photograph.””
His expression became confused.
Then afraid.
Because there was only one baby connected to his first wife.
Sophie.
But the photograph was from ten years ago.
Before Sophie was born.
Detective Collins spoke carefully.
“Emily, are you certain?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
James took the envelope from the table.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Inside was a letter.
A long one.
Written by his first wife.
He read silently.
The longer he read, the more his expression changed.
Then he handed it to me.
I hesitated.
But I took it.
The first line made my heart stop.
*James, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect our family.*
I continued.
The letter explained everything.
Years earlier, before Sophie was born, James’s first wife had discovered that someone close to them had been hiding a secret.
A child.
A child connected to James.
A child he never knew existed.
I looked up.
James was pale.
“No.””
His voice was barely audible.
“That’s impossible.””
Detective Collins looked at the letter.
“Who is the child?””
James didn’t answer.
Because he was already afraid of the answer.
I kept reading.
The letter mentioned a woman.
A woman who had disappeared from their lives years before.
A woman who claimed James abandoned her.
A woman named…
Vanessa’s mother.
I looked up.
“James.””
He stared at me.
“What?””
“This is about Vanessa.””
The room went silent.
James shook his head.
“No.””
Detective Collins read the next page.
Then stopped.
“What?””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked at James.
“Mr. Whitmore…”
Her voice softened.
“This letter says Vanessa wasn’t trying to take your company.””
James looked confused.
“Then what was she trying to do?””
Detective Collins lowered the paper.
“She was trying to prove something.””
“What?””
She looked at him.
“That she was your daughter.””
Nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
James stepped back.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“No, that’s not possible.””
I watched him.
A man who had faced business wars without fear.
A man who had stared down enemies.
Now broken by one sentence.
“She’s lying.””
Detective Collins looked at the letter.
“Maybe.””
“But?””
“But your first wife believed it was true.””
James looked at the envelope.
His whole world had changed.
Again.
Then a sound came from the hallway.
A door opening.
Everyone turned.
Sophie’s nanny stood there, holding a small box.
“Mr. Whitmore?””
James looked at her.
“What is it?””
The nanny looked nervous.
“I found this in Sophie’s closet.””
She handed him the box.
“I thought it was just an old toy, but…”
James opened it.
Inside was another photograph.
His face changed immediately.
Because it showed Vanessa.
Standing beside Sophie’s mother.
Holding a newborn baby.
And written on the back were four words.
*The missing Whitmore child.*
James dropped the photograph.
Detective Collins picked it up.
Then looked at me.
“This changes everything.””
Before anyone could respond, James’s phone buzzed.
A message.
From Vanessa.
Only three words.
*Ask your daughter.*
James stared at the screen.
And for the first time, we all realized the same terrifying truth.

Vanessa hadn’t been trying to destroy the Whitmore family.
She believed she was the Whitmore family.
