Chapter 11: Vanessa’s Final Bargain

James held the phone tightly.

Nobody moved.

Vanessa’s voice continued through the speaker.

“You need to listen carefully.””

James’s expression hardened.

“Where are you?””

A small laugh.

“You still think you’re in control.””

Detective Collins signaled for James to keep her talking.

He understood.

“Vanessa, what do you want?””

“What I wanted from the beginning.””

“Money?””

“No.””

Her answer came immediately.

“Freedom.””

I looked at the phone.

Freedom?

After everything she had done?

James seemed to think the same thing.

“You almost killed my daughter.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa spoke quietly.

“I never wanted Sophie hurt.””

My fists tightened.

“You pushed her into a pool.””

“You weren’t supposed to reach her in time.””

The words came out so casually that everyone froze.

James closed his eyes.

The pain on his face was impossible to hide.

Detective Collins whispered:

“She just admitted it.””

The call was still connected.

James kept his voice steady.

“Where are you?””

“I’m leaving.””

“With what?””

Another pause.

Then Vanessa answered.

“The truth.””

James looked at the envelope in his hand.

“You mean the documents.””

“Yes.””

I felt my stomach drop.

She knew.

She knew we found it.

“How?””

Vanessa laughed.

“You really think Richard was the only person watching you?””

James looked around the room.

Detective Collins immediately checked the security system.

Someone had been inside.

Someone had been listening.

Vanessa continued.

“I spent years pretending to be someone else.””

James said nothing.

“You know what the worst part is?””

“What?””

“I actually loved you.””

Nobody expected that.

Not even James.

But Vanessa’s voice cracked slightly.

“I loved the life you gave me.””

The honesty was disturbing.

Because it wasn’t love.

It was possession.

James spoke quietly.

“You never loved my daughter.””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“I didn’t.””

I saw James’s hand tighten.

Vanessa continued.

“She was the one thing I couldn’t control.””

Detective Collins looked disgusted.

“Keep her talking.””

James nodded.

“What does the second envelope contain?””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

“The envelope isn’t about the company.””

Everyone looked at each other.

“What?””

Vanessa’s voice lowered.

“It’s about Sophie.””

The room changed.

James went still.

“What did you say?””

“Your first wife discovered the truth before she died.””

My heart started pounding.

“What truth?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she said:

“Ask Emily.””

Every eye turned toward me.

I shook my head.

“I don’t know anything.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Yes, you do.””

“No.””

“You found the first envelope.””

“I didn’t open it.””

“But you saw the photograph.””

I froze.

James looked at me.

“What photograph?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I had forgotten.

The photograph inside the first envelope.

The one I had barely looked at.

The one with Vanessa and Daniel.

But there had been something else.

A handwritten note behind it.

A note I never read.

Vanessa’s voice continued.

“You were closer to the truth than anyone.””

The call suddenly became silent.

“Vanessa?””

No answer.

James looked at Detective Collins.

“She hung up.””

Detective Collins immediately checked the trace.

“Too short.””

James looked at the envelope.

Then at me.

“Emily.””

I swallowed.

“What?””

“What did you see in that photograph?””

I looked down.

The memory came back.

The image.

The writing.

The small detail I ignored.

And suddenly, I understood why Vanessa was desperate.

Why she risked everything.

Why she wanted me gone.

Because the photograph wasn’t just proof she knew James’s first wife.

It showed something impossible.

Something that could destroy everything.

I looked at James.

“Your first wife wasn’t alone in that picture.””

His face changed.

“What do you mean?””

May you like

I whispered:

“She was holding a baby.””
