Calm

Chapter 4: The Hidden Files

The folder sat on James Whitmore’s desk like a weapon.

I had seen James face angry investors, aggressive reporters, and ruthless competitors.

But I had never seen him look afraid.

Not until that morning.

Detective Collins stood across from him, explaining everything they had uncovered about Vanessa and her brother, Daniel.

“Your wife had access to information she shouldn’t have had,” she said.

“Private company documents. Financial reports. Internal strategies.””

James flipped through the pages again.

“That’s impossible.””

Detective Collins remained calm.

“Why?””

“Because only senior executives have access to these files.””

She glanced at the folder.

“Your home computer was logged into your company network several times after midnight over the past two months.””

James looked up.

“Vanessa doesn’t work for my company.””

“No,” Detective Collins replied.

“But someone using devices registered to this house did.””

I stood near the doorway, silent.

For years, I had cleaned the Whitmore estate.

I had walked past expensive furniture, private offices, and locked rooms.

But I never imagined the house itself could hide secrets.

James closed the folder.

“Why would she need company information?””

Detective Collins looked at him carefully.

“That’s what we’re trying to find out.””

His jaw tightened.

Then his eyes moved toward me.

“Emily.””

I looked up.

“Did you ever notice anything unusual?””

I thought back.

The late-night phone calls.

The arguments.

The way Vanessa always asked questions about James’s business.

Then one memory returned.

A small moment I had forgotten.

“She asked me about your office.””

James frowned.

“When?””

“A few months ago.””

I remembered standing in the kitchen, preparing lunch.

Vanessa had walked in wearing a silk robe, holding her phone.

“Emily,” she had said casually, “does James keep important documents in his home office?””

I had looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

She smiled.

“Of course you do. You clean that room.””

“I don’t touch Mr. Whitmore’s desk.””

Her smile disappeared for a second.

Then she laughed.

“I was just curious.””

At the time, I thought it was strange.

Now it felt like a warning I had ignored.

James leaned forward.

“What else?””

I swallowed.

“She asked if you kept backups.””

The room went quiet.

Detective Collins immediately wrote it down.

“When did this happen?””

“About six weeks ago.””

James stood up.

“Six weeks.””

His voice was low.

Six weeks ago was when Vanessa had started changing.

She became more distant with Sophie.

More interested in James’s schedule.

More curious about his business.

Detective Collins gathered the papers.

“We need to speak with Mrs. Whitmore again.””

James looked toward the stairs.

“She’s upstairs.””

“I know.””

Her expression hardened.

“But before we do that, I need to tell you something.””

She opened another file.

“This morning, Daniel Whitmore attempted to leave the country.””

James froze.

“What?””

“He was stopped at the airport.””

“Where was he going?””

Detective Collins looked at the document.

“Switzerland.””

James stared.

“Why?””

“We don’t know yet.””

I watched James process everything.

The woman he married.

The woman he trusted around his daughter.

The woman he defended.

Had been planning something behind his back.

Then a sound came from upstairs.

A baby crying.

I moved immediately.

Without thinking.

I walked toward Sophie’s room.

James followed.

When I entered, Sophie’s eyes opened.

The moment she saw me, her tiny hand reached out.

I picked her up carefully.

“It’s okay, sweetheart.””

Her little fingers grabbed my shirt.

James watched us quietly.

“She trusts you.””

I looked at him.

“She always has.””

He looked down.

“I should have too.””

Before I could answer, James’s phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t respond.

He simply handed me the phone.

A message was displayed.

From an unknown number.

*If you want to know what your wife was planning, ask Emily about the night she found the envelope.*

My heart stopped.

I looked at James.

“What envelope?””

His eyes narrowed.

“Emily?””

I felt the room become colder.

Because I knew exactly what they were talking about.

May you like

And I had never told anyone.

Not even James.
