Chapter 14: The Truth Behind the Lies

The document sat between them.

Nobody touched it.

Not at first.

Because sometimes the truth is more frightening before you know what it says.

James stared at Vanessa.

“You expect me to believe this?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I expect you to read it.””

Detective Collins stepped forward.

“I’ll examine it.””

Vanessa handed it over.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

The old house creaked around us.

Dust floated through the sunlight.

A place that had once belonged to the Whitmore family was now holding its biggest secret.

Finally, Detective Collins looked up.

“It appears authentic.””

James’s expression tightened.

“Appears?””

“I need a full verification.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Of course.””

Her eyes moved to James.

“That’s what everyone always did.””

“What?””

“Doubted me.””

I expected to feel anger.

But I didn’t.

Because underneath everything, I saw something else.

A woman who had spent her entire life believing she had been denied something.

The problem was what she had done because of that belief.

James looked at her.

“Even if this is true, it doesn’t excuse what you did.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

For the first time, she looked ashamed.

“I know.””

The answer surprised everyone.

“I know I went too far.””

“You tried to frame Emily.””

“Yes.””

“You endangered Sophie.””

Her eyes lowered.

“Yes.””

The honesty was almost more disturbing than another lie.

James shook his head.

“I trusted you.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I know.””

“Why her?””

He pointed toward me.

“Why did you target Emily?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because she loved Sophie.””

That answer made no sense.

Until she continued.

“She was the person Sophie trusted most.””

I felt a chill.

Vanessa’s voice became quieter.

“And I hated that.””

James looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because every time Sophie reached for Emily, I saw everything I never had.””

The room became silent.

“I thought if Emily disappeared, Sophie would finally need me.””

I stared at her.

The truth was ugly.

But real.

Vanessa wasn’t just trying to remove an employee.

She was trying to replace a mother.

Detective Collins stepped forward.

“Mrs. Whitmore, you understand that you still have to answer for your actions.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.””

Then she looked at James.

“But before you decide what happens to me…”

She pointed toward the document.

“You need to know what else my mother discovered.””

James looked confused.

“What?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She discovered your father didn’t abandon her.””

Everyone became still.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“Your father knew about me.””

James shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“He would have told me.””

Vanessa gave a sad smile.

“Would he?””

James said nothing.

Because deep down, he knew.

His father had secrets.

Everyone in the Whitmore family knew that.

Detective Collins examined the document again.

“There’s a name mentioned here.””

James looked at her.

“Whose?””

She hesitated.

Then answered:

“Your first wife’s.””

That confused me.

“Why would Sophie’s mother be involved?””

Detective Collins read further.

“She helped Vanessa’s mother hide the documents.””

James looked shocked.

“My wife helped her?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She believed I deserved to know the truth.””

The room went quiet.

Then everything clicked.

The first envelope.

The second envelope.

The photograph.

The warnings.

James’s first wife hadn’t been trying to expose Vanessa.

She had been trying to protect her.

But from whom?

Detective Collins found another page.

Then stopped.

“What?””

She looked at James.

“This says someone threatened your first wife.””

James went pale.

“Who?””

Detective Collins turned the page.

“The same person who tried to take control of your company.””

Nobody spoke.

Richard’s face changed.

Because he knew.

James slowly looked at him.

“No.””

Richard looked away.

“James…”

“You knew.””

Richard didn’t answer.

“You knew about Vanessa.””

Richard whispered:

“Yes.””

“And my wife?””

Silence.

That silence was enough.

James stepped back.

“You knew she was in danger.””

Richard looked broken.

“I tried to stop it.””

James stared.

“But you didn’t.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“No.””

The truth finally came out.

Richard had not just helped Vanessa.

He had helped hide what happened years ago.

Detective Collins moved toward him.

“Mr. Hale, you’re coming with us.””

Richard didn’t resist.

As he was taken away, he stopped beside James.

“I’m sorry.””

James looked at him.

But there was no forgiveness in his eyes.

Only grief.

After everyone left, James stood alone in the old house.

I walked beside him.

“You okay?””

He looked at me.

“No.””

It was the first honest answer I had heard from him in days.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, his expression changed.

“Who?””

I watched him listen.

Then he slowly lowered the phone.

“Emily.””

“What?””

He looked at me.

“The DNA results came back.””

My heart stopped.

“And?””

James looked toward the photograph.

Toward Vanessa.

Toward the family secrets that had destroyed so many lives.

Then he said:

“Vanessa is not my sister.””

A pause.

“She’s not my father’s daughter either.””

I froze.

“Then who is she?””

James looked terrified.

Because the answer was something none of us expected.

May you like

“She’s connected to my family.””

“But not the way she thought.””
