Chapter 8: The File That Was Never Meant To Be Found
I didn’t sleep.
I sat in my office staring at the file on my desk.
The same file that had existed for nine years.
The same file that everyone believed contained the answer.
But now I saw it differently.
Not as a record of my brother’s disappearance.
As evidence of someone’s success in hiding it.
Detective Harris walked in carrying two coffees.
She placed one beside me.
“You’re going to need that.””
I didn’t touch it.
“You knew something was wrong with Reed?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation bothered me.
“How long?””
“Michael—”
“How long did you suspect?””
She sat down.
“Years.””
I looked at her.
“And you never told me?””
“I didn’t have proof.””
I laughed quietly.
“So everyone knew something except me?””
“No.””
“Yes.””
My voice cracked.
“I spent nine years believing my brother was dead.””
Harris looked away.
“I’m sorry.””
I hated those words.
Everyone was sorry.
Sorry after the damage was done.
Sorry after years were gone.
I opened the file.
“There’s something missing.””
She looked at me.
“What?””
“The original evidence.””
She frowned.
“You think Reed removed it?””
“I think he removed anything that could lead back to him.””
We searched through old records.
Most of the documents were there.
Reports.
Statements.
Photographs.
But one page was missing.
The interview transcript.
The last conversation Daniel had before disappearing.
“Who interviewed him?””
I asked.
Harris checked the file.
“Captain Reed.””
Of course.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice whispered:
“Michael Carter?””
“Yes.””
“Your brother is telling you the truth.””
I stood.
“Who is this?””
Silence.
Then:
“Someone who survived Thomas Reed.””
The line crackled.
“Where are you?””
“I can’t talk long.””
“Who are you?””
The woman took a shaky breath.
“Rachel.””
My entire body froze.
Evan’s mother.
Daniel’s sister.
The woman everyone thought was gone.
“Where is Evan?””
“He’s safe.””
“Are you?””
A pause.
“No.””
I looked at Harris.
She was already reaching for a recorder.
“Rachel, listen to me. We can help you.””
A quiet laugh came through the phone.
“No, Michael.””
Her voice broke.
“You don’t understand.””
“What?””
“Thomas doesn’t just control people.””
The line went quiet.
“He replaces them.””
My skin crawled.
“What does that mean?””
Before she answered, a sound came through the phone.
A door opening.
Rachel whispered:
“He found me.””
“Rachel?””
“If he asks about the basement, don’t tell him you found it.””
The call ended.
I immediately tried calling back.
Nothing.
The number was disconnected.
Harris looked at me.
“We need to move Evan.””
I nodded.
But before we left, I noticed something.
A small envelope had been pushed under my office door.
No name.
No writing.
Just my initials.
M.C.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
A photocopy.
A birth certificate.
Evan Carter.
But this one was different.
The father’s name wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t blank.
It wasn’t unknown.
It said:
Thomas Reed.
I stared at the paper.
My hands went cold.
Because if this was real…
Captain Reed wasn’t just hiding my brother.
May you like
He was connected to Evan.
And he had spent nine years standing beside me while knowing exactly who he was.
