Chapter 13: The Person Behind The Glass
Nobody moved.
The words on the evidence room window stared back at us.
I KNOW EVERYTHING.
The marker ink was still wet.
Whoever wrote it had been standing on the other side of that glass moments earlier.
Detective Harris raised her weapon.
“Everyone stay where you are.””
Her eyes scanned the hallway.
The station had gone strangely quiet.
Too quiet.
Police stations are never completely silent.
There is always a phone ringing.
A printer running.
Someone walking through the halls.
But now there was nothing.
Like the entire building was holding its breath.
Evan moved closer to Daniel.
“Is he here?””
Daniel looked down at him.
“No.””
But his voice didn’t sound certain.
I stepped toward the door.
Harris blocked me.
“Michael, wait.””
“I need to know who wrote that.””
“We don’t know what we’re walking into.””
I looked through the glass.
The hallway was empty.
But the message remained.
Someone had gotten inside.
Someone who knew about the memory card.
Someone who knew about Evan.
Someone who knew about Daniel.
My radio suddenly crackled.
“Officer Carter?””
I grabbed it.
“Go ahead.””
A voice came through.
Not one of my officers.
Not dispatch.
A familiar voice.
“Michael.””
My stomach dropped.
Captain Reed.
Everyone heard it.
Harris looked at me.
The radio continued.
“You have something that belongs to me.””
I stepped closer.
“You broke into my station.””
A quiet laugh.
“Your station?””
A pause.
“Michael, you still don’t understand.””
My jaw tightened.
“What don’t I understand?””
“That everything you have ever believed about this case was carefully designed.””
I looked around the room.
“At least come here and say it to my face.””
Silence.
Then:
“I already did.””
The radio went dead.
A cold feeling moved through me.
I turned slowly.
Because suddenly I understood.
He wasn’t outside.
He was already inside.
“Lock down the station,” Harris ordered.
Officers rushed through the halls.
But I couldn’t stop thinking.
Someone had entered the building.
Someone had written that message.
Someone had accessed the radio.
And nobody saw them.
Then Evan whispered:
“He’s not alone.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
The boy stared at the floor.
“Ryan said he never worked alone.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Evan, what else did Ryan tell you?””
The boy hugged himself.
“He said bad people wear good uniforms.””
Every officer in the room froze.
Because that sentence meant something different here.
I looked at the officers around me.
People I had worked beside for years.
People I trusted.
How many secrets had been hidden inside these walls?
Then footsteps echoed from the hallway.
Slow.
Calm.
A man appeared at the end of the corridor.
Not Reed.
Someone else.
Someone wearing a police uniform.
My heart sank.
“Officer Blake?””
He stopped.
His face was expressionless.
Detective Harris whispered:
“Michael…”
I already knew.
Something was wrong.
Blake had worked the evidence room for six years.
He was the person who processed every piece of evidence in my department.
Including Daniel’s case.
He lifted his hands.
“I don’t want anyone hurt.””
Harris aimed her weapon.
“Step away from the hallway.””
Blake looked at me.
“I tried to keep him away from you.””
I stared.
“Who?””
His eyes moved toward Evan.
“Thomas.””
The hallway went silent.
“Then why are you here?””
Blake looked down.
“Because I failed.””
He reached into his jacket.
Everyone raised their weapons.
But he pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this hidden in Reed’s office.””
He held it out.
“It’s everything.””
I took it carefully.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Names.
Payments.
A list of people connected to Reed.
My hands stopped when I saw the final page.
The signature at the bottom wasn’t Reed’s.
It wasn’t Blake’s.
It was my own.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Blake looked terrified.
“Michael…”
My heart pounded.
“What?””
He whispered:
“Reed planned this from the beginning.””
I looked back at the paper.
A confession.
A confession written as if I had admitted to hiding evidence.
And dated three years ago.
A time when I had never seen the document before.
Someone had created proof that I was part of it.
Someone had been preparing to destroy me.
Blake stepped closer.
“He knew one day you would find Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His answer was barely audible.
“Because Daniel wasn’t the person Reed was afraid of.””
May you like
A pause.
“You were.””
