Chapter 7: The Man Who Taught Me The Badge
I stared at the photograph until the faces blurred.
My captain.
The man who shook my hand when I graduated from the academy.
The man who gave me my first assignment.
The man who stood beside me when I received my detective promotion.
Captain Thomas Reed.
For nine years, he had been the person I trusted most after losing Daniel.
And now my brother was telling me he was the reason Daniel disappeared.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
Daniel looked at me carefully.
“I know what it feels like.””
“You don’t.””
“Yes, I do.””
His voice was quiet.
“Because I spent nine years knowing the person who ruined my life was someone I trusted.””
I looked away.
The basement felt smaller.
The air felt heavier.
“There has to be another explanation.””
Daniel nodded.
“There is always another explanation when you don’t want to believe the truth.””
The words hurt because they were true.
I picked up the photograph.
“When was this taken?””
“Two weeks before I disappeared.””
I looked at him.
“Why was he with our family?””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Because he wasn’t just your captain.””
“What does that mean?””
“He knew our family before you ever wore that uniform.””
A chill moved through me.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel walked toward the wall.
“When I started investigating Evan’s situation, I discovered someone had been covering up information.””
“About Ryan?””
“No.””
He looked back at me.
“About Rachel.””
The name hung in the air.
“She was scared of someone,” Daniel continued.
“She tried to run. She tried to take Evan and disappear.””
“From who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
I already knew.
“Captain Reed.””
He nodded.
I felt sick.
My entire career.
Every lesson.
Every piece of advice.
Was it all built on a lie?
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
A message.
From Captain Reed.
*Michael, I heard you found your brother. We need to talk. Alone.*
Daniel saw the screen.
“Don’t.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Don’t meet him.””
“He’s my captain.””
“He’s the man who erased my life.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t know that.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“I watched him bury evidence.””
The room went silent.
“What evidence?””
“Proof that Rachel was alive.””
I stepped closer.
“Explain.””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“The night I disappeared, I was going to bring information to the police.””
“You were bringing evidence?””
“Yes.””
“Against Reed?””
Daniel nodded.
“But before I could, he found me.””
My jaw tightened.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“He gave me a choice.””
I waited.
“He said if I exposed him, Rachel and Evan would die.””
My stomach dropped.
“So you ran.””
“I disappeared to protect them.””
I looked at Evan.
The little boy sat quietly in the corner, listening.
“And Ryan?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Ryan was supposed to help hide them.””
“Supposed to?””
Daniel’s face darkened.
“Ryan got scared. He started hurting Evan. I tried to get him away.””
“But you couldn’t.””
“No.””
The answer was painful.
“I was trapped too.””
For the first time, I saw my brother differently.
Not as someone who abandoned me.
As someone who had been fighting a war alone.
But there was still one question.
“Why didn’t you contact me?””
Daniel looked directly at me.
“Because Reed told me you were working for him.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He said you had become exactly what he wanted.””
My heart sank.
“He made you believe I was dangerous.””
I remembered all those years.
All the times Reed told me to stop searching.
All the times he said I needed closure.
All the times he told me Daniel was probably gone.
I had trusted him.
Because he was the person who helped me survive losing my brother.
A knock came from the basement stairs.
Everyone turned.
Officer Miller stood there.
“Michael.””
His face was pale.
“What happened?””
He held up his phone.
“We found something.””
He looked at Daniel.
“Something about Captain Reed.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Miller swallowed.
“His name appears in Daniel’s missing persons investigation.””
I stepped closer.
“Where?””
“In the original report.””
“That’s impossible.””
Miller shook his head.
“No.””
He handed me the file.
A signature was at the bottom.
The officer who closed Daniel’s case.
The officer who marked it as a runaway.
May you like
The officer who convinced everyone to stop looking.
Captain Thomas Reed.
