Chapter 11: The Recording In The Dark
The evidence room door locked behind us.
Only four people were inside.
Me.
Daniel.
Detective Harris.
And Evan.
The memory card sat on the table.
Small enough to fit between two fingers.
Yet it carried the weight of nine years of lies.
I stared at it.
“Where did you get this?””
Evan looked at Daniel.
“He gave it to me.””
“When?””
“Before he disappeared.””
Daniel nodded.
“I knew Reed was searching for it.””
“Then why leave it with Evan?””
“Because nobody would search a child.””
The answer made me sick.
Because it worked.
A child had carried the truth while adults destroyed each other looking for it.
Detective Harris inserted the card into the computer.
The screen flickered.
A single audio file appeared.
No video.
Just sound.
The file name was:
*DAD_FINAL_RECORDING.*
I felt my throat tighten.
Harris pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
My father.
I forgot how to breathe.
“If you’re hearing this…”
His voice cracked through the speakers.
“If Michael is hearing this, then something happened to me.””
I covered my mouth.
Nine years.
Nine years without hearing him.
Daniel looked away.
My father continued.
“Thomas Reed knows I found out.””
A pause.
“He has been using his position to erase evidence.””
My hands curled into fists.
“I tried to report him.””
Static.
“But he has people everywhere.””
The recording became distorted.
Then my father’s voice returned.
“Daniel, if you’re listening…”
Daniel froze.
“Protect your brother.””
My eyes filled.
“Don’t let him become what Reed wants him to become.””
The recording continued.
“There is something else.””
A long silence.
Then:
“Rachel is alive.””
Everyone looked at each other.
My father knew.
“She has a child.””
Evan stared at the speakers.
“A boy named Evan.””
The room became completely still.
My father’s voice softened.
“Michael, I’m sorry you had to learn this way.””
Static.
“But the man you trust most is the man you should fear.””
The audio cut.
Nobody spoke.
Then the computer screen went black.
Detective Harris looked at me.
“Michael…”
I couldn’t answer.
Because one thought was screaming louder than everything else.
My father knew.
He knew everything.
And he tried to warn me.
My phone rang.
I looked down.
Captain Reed.
Again.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Then Reed said:
“You heard it.””
My blood ran cold.
“How?””
A quiet laugh.
“Because I knew Daniel kept a copy.””
I looked around the room.
“How?””
Reed didn’t answer.
Instead:
“Michael, I want you to think carefully.””
His voice became colder.
“You have spent your entire life trying to be your father’s son.””
I said nothing.
“But you don’t know the truth about him.””
My grip tightened.
“What truth?””
A pause.
“The truth is Daniel wasn’t protecting Evan from me.””
I looked at Daniel.
Reed continued.
“He was protecting Evan from your father.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
“Ask Daniel.””
The line went dead.
I turned.
Daniel was already looking at me.
His face had changed.
Because he knew what Reed had just done.
“What is he talking about?””
Daniel didn’t speak.
“Daniel.””
He closed his eyes.
May you like
And whispered:
“Your father wasn’t the only person who knew about Evan.””
