Chapter 14: The Last File
The confession sat on my desk like a loaded weapon.
My name.
My signature.
My reputation.
Everything I had spent my life building could disappear overnight.
But I didn’t care about that anymore.
Not compared to Evan.
Not compared to Daniel.
Not compared to the truth.
“Where is Reed?”” I asked Blake.
He looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not good enough.””
“I’m telling you the truth.””
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Why help us now?””
Blake’s face changed.
“Because my daughter was one of the children in those files.””
Nobody spoke.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“Years ago, Reed closed a case involving her disappearance.””
My expression hardened.
“Your daughter?””
He nodded.
“She was found later.””
A pause.
“But the evidence was gone.””
The room became painfully quiet.
“How many?””
Blake looked down.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel looked at the documents.
“But Reed knows.””
I opened the envelope again.
Hidden between the pages was a small flash drive.
A label was attached.
*MICHAEL.*
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you know about this?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
We connected it to the computer.
A video file appeared.
The date was nine years ago.
The night Daniel disappeared.
I pressed play.
The screen showed a dark room.
Then a younger Thomas Reed appeared.
My hands clenched.
He was talking to someone off-camera.
Daniel.
“You should have listened to your father.””
Reed’s voice filled the room.
Daniel appeared on screen.
Younger.
Scared.
But standing tall.
“I know what you did.””
Reed smiled.
“That’s what makes you dangerous.””
Daniel’s voice shook.
“You killed him.””
Reed leaned closer.
“No.””
He paused.
“I corrected a problem.””
I felt sick.
The recording continued.
“You think your brother will understand?””
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
Reed smiled.
“Michael.””
My breath caught.
“He trusts me.””
Reed walked around the room.
“He sees me as the man who helped him survive.””
The younger Daniel looked furious.
“You’re sick.””
Reed ignored him.
“One day Michael will find out.””
He looked directly into the camera.
“And when he does…”
The screen froze.
Then Reed finished:
“He will have to choose.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Because now I understood.
This was never just about hiding the past.
Reed wanted control over the future.
He wanted me to doubt everyone.
Even myself.
A sound came from the station entrance.
The front doors opened.
Everyone turned.
Captain Thomas Reed walked inside.
No panic.
No fear.
Just calm.
He looked older than I remembered.
But his eyes were the same.
“Michael.””
Every officer raised their weapons.
Reed looked around.
Then at Daniel.
“You brought him back.””
I stepped forward.
“You destroyed my family.””
Reed sighed.
“I saved it.””
The anger inside me burned.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
He looked at Evan.
“I expect you to ask the right question.””
I frowned.
“What question?””
Reed looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“The question your brother has avoided for nine years.””
Daniel’s face went pale.
I turned.
“What is he talking about?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Reed smiled sadly.
“Ask him why Evan was really in that basement.””
The room froze.
I looked at Daniel.
My brother looked away.
May you like
And for the first time…
I wondered if Reed was telling the truth.
