Chapter 12: The Brother’s Final Secret

The silence after Daniel’s confession felt heavier than any argument.

I waited.

I needed him to deny it.

I needed him to tell me Reed was lying.

But Daniel didn’t.

That scared me more.

“You knew.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Since the night Dad died.””

My stomach dropped.

Detective Harris stepped closer.

“Daniel, you need to explain.””

He nodded.

“I will.””

He looked at Evan.

“Because he deserves the truth too.””

The boy sat quietly.

Holding onto the edge of the chair.

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Dad wasn’t investigating Reed because of the evidence.””

“What?””

“He was investigating because of Rachel.””

I frowned.

“What does Rachel have to do with Dad?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Everything.””

He walked to the table.

“When Rachel came back, she was sixteen. She was pregnant.””

My eyes moved toward Evan.

“With Evan.””

Daniel nodded.

“She was scared. She didn’t know what to do.””

“And Dad helped her?””

“Yes.””

“Then why would Reed say Dad was involved?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because Dad made a mistake.””

The words hung there.

“What mistake?””

“He trusted Reed.””

I waited.

“Dad thought Reed could help protect Rachel.””

A bitter smile crossed Daniel’s face.

“He was wrong.””

Detective Harris crossed her arms.

“So Reed targeted your family because your father knew about Evan.””

Daniel nodded.

“But that’s not the whole story.””

He looked at me.

“The reason Reed was afraid wasn’t because Dad knew Evan existed.””

“Then why?””

Daniel reached into the evidence box.

He pulled out another document.

A medical report.

My hands shook as I read it.

A DNA test.

Rachel Carter.

Thomas Reed.

Evan Carter.

The results were clear.

I looked up.

“Reed is his father.””

Daniel nodded.

“He always knew.””

The pieces started connecting.

Ryan.

Rachel.

The basement.

The missing evidence.

“He wanted Evan.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“Because Evan was proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Reed had destroyed a family to hide what he did.””

The room went silent.

Then the lights suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Evan gasped.

Someone moved outside the door.

Detective Harris reached for her weapon.

“Everyone stay back.””

A shadow passed across the glass window.

Then the door handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

Locked.

Whoever was outside wasn’t trying to enter.

They wanted us to know they were there.

My phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One picture.

Evan.

Taken minutes earlier.

Inside the station.

My blood ran cold.

Someone had been watching us.

The message below contained only five words.

*Bring me the memory card.*

Daniel saw it.

His face changed.

“Michael.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He whispered:

“He found us.””

The emergency lights turned on.

And when they did, we saw something written on the evidence room window.

A message drawn in black marker.

Not from Reed.

Not from a stranger.

From someone inside the building.

May you like

Three words.

*I KNOW EVERYTHING.*
