Chapter 4: The Voice From The Past

I stood in the abandoned farmhouse holding my phone long after the call ended.

The screen went dark.

But my mind refused to.

Don’t trust Evan.

Three words.

Three impossible words.

I looked at the little boy standing beside Detective Harris.

Evan was staring at me.

Not with guilt.

With fear.

Like he already knew something had happened.

“Who was that?”” Harris asked.

I lowered the phone.

“I don’t know.””

It was the first lie I had told her.

Because deep down, I knew.

I knew that voice.

The slight hesitation before speaking.

The quiet breath between words.

The way he said my name like he was trying to make sure I was real.

It was Daniel.

My brother was alive.

But he had just warned me about the child who led me to him.

Evan noticed my expression.

“Was it him?””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

“My dad.””

The question caught me off guard.

“Daniel?””

He nodded slowly.

“He called, didn’t he?””

I felt Detective Harris watching me.

“You knew he might call?””

Evan looked down.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

I crouched beside him.

“Evan, I need you to be honest with me.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I am.””

“Then why did you ask if it was Daniel?””

He rubbed his sleeve against his face.

“Because he said he might.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

“Before I left.””

I stood.

“Before you ran away?””

Evan nodded.

“He told me if I ever got away from Ryan, I had to find you.””

“Why?””

The boy hesitated.

“Because you were the only person he trusted.””

I looked at the phone in my hand.

Then back at Evan.

“Then why would he tell me not to trust you?””

Evan went completely still.

For a moment, the only sound was the wind moving through the broken windows.

“I don’t know.””

And somehow, that scared me more.

Because he wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t defensive.

He looked hurt.

Like those words had wounded him too.

Detective Harris stepped between us.

“We need to separate facts from assumptions.””

She looked at me.

“Your brother is alive. That’s a fact.””

Then she looked at Evan.

“This child was abused by Ryan. That’s a fact.””

She pointed toward the photo.

“But someone has been manipulating all of you.””

I looked at the picture again.

The woman holding baby Evan.

The note on the back.

Your mother knows.

“I need to go home.””

Harris frowned.

“Michael—”

“I need answers.””

“You’re too close to this.””

Maybe she was right.

But for nine years, everyone told me to accept that Daniel was gone.

Everyone told me to move on.

I had buried a brother who might still be alive.

I wasn’t burying him again.

My mother opened the door before I knocked.

That was the first strange thing.

She was waiting.

Her face changed the moment she saw me.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“Michael…”

I held up the photograph.

She stared at it.

The color disappeared from her face.

“Where did you get that?””

I felt something inside me break.

Because those were not the words of someone seeing a fake.

Those were the words of someone recognizing a nightmare.

“You tell me.””

She looked away.

“Come inside.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“No more secrets.””

My mother closed her eyes.

For a few seconds, she looked older than I had ever seen her.

“Your brother asked me to protect you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Protect me?””

“You think knowing the truth would have saved you?””

“It would have saved nine years of thinking he was dead.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel wasn’t supposed to disappear.””

I stepped closer.

“What happened?””

She looked toward the hallway.

Then whispered:

“Someone was watching him.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

Her hands trembled.

“The same person who is watching you now.””

A noise came from outside.

A car door closing.

We both froze.

My mother looked toward the window.

“He found you.””

“Who?””

But she didn’t respond.

She grabbed my arm.

“You need to leave.””

“Not until you tell me everything.””

She looked at me with tears running down her face.

“Michael…”

The front door behind me suddenly opened.

I turned.

And standing there was someone I never expected to see.

Someone holding an old photograph in his hand.

May you like

Someone who looked exactly like the ghost I had mourned for nine years.

Daniel.
