Chapter 7: The Family That Stole My Child and Called It Protection

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The world seemed to stop around me.

I stared at Emma.

Then at Mark.

Then back at Emma.

“Say that again.””

My voice barely came out.

Emma looked down.

“I said… your father-in-law took me.””

Mark’s face turned pale.

“No.””

Emma flinched at his reaction.

“I know it sounds impossible.””

“No,” Mark repeated, louder this time.

“That’s not possible.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Mark, you have to listen.””

He looked at her.

“Who are you to tell me anything about my family?””

Her expression hardened.

“The woman who raised the daughter your family stole.””

The words hit him like a punch.

I watched my husband’s face collapse.

Because there was something worse than discovering a stranger had betrayed you.

It was discovering that the people who raised you had.

Mark turned away.

“My father would never do that.””

I wanted to believe him.

I really did.

Because if Mark’s family had been involved, then another piece of my life was a lie.

How many more secrets were waiting?

“How?”” I whispered.

Emma looked at me.

“Because Grandpa Davis wasn’t the only person protecting a secret.””

She pulled out another envelope.

“This was hidden with my records.””

I took it.

Inside was a photograph.

An old photograph.

Two men stood beside a hospital entrance.

One was my father.

The other was Mark’s father, Richard.

I knew him immediately.

He had been at our wedding.

He had held Lily as a baby.

He had called me daughter.

But now I saw something different.

Not love.

Not kindness.

A transaction.

“What were they doing together?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Sarah did.

“They made a deal.””

Mark looked at her.

“What deal?””

She swallowed.

“A deal to separate the twins.””

My knees nearly gave out.

“No.””

Sarah nodded.

“They believed your daughters were the key to a family inheritance.””

I stared at her.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does when you understand the money involved.””

Emma stepped closer.

“Your father and Richard were business partners. Their companies were failing. But there was a trust fund connected to your family.””

I shook my head.

“My family?””

“Yes.””

She looked at me sadly.

“Your grandmother created a trust before she died. The money would only go to your children.””

I felt sick.

“So they took my children because of money?””

Sarah looked away.

“At first, it was supposed to be temporary.””

“Temporary?””

My voice rose.

“They stole a baby.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My anger exploded.

“You don’t know what it feels like to wake up every morning thinking you know your own life.””

Sarah lowered her eyes.

“You’re right.””

Her voice broke.

“I don’t.””

The room went quiet.

Then Mark spoke.

“My father told me Emma died.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

He ran a hand through his hair.

“When I was a kid, I heard him talking to my mother. They said there was a baby who didn’t survive.””

My heart shattered.

“They lied to you too.””

He nodded slowly.

“My whole life.””

Lily stood near the stairs, watching everything.

I realized something then.

She had lost the only grandfather she trusted.

She had discovered her family was built on lies.

And she was still standing.

My brave girl.

My daughter.

Both of my daughters.

I looked at Emma.

“Where have you been all these years?””

She hesitated.

“With Sarah.””

I looked at Sarah.

“Why?””

She closed her eyes.

“Because Richard forced me.””

“Forced you?””

“He threatened to destroy my family.””

My hands curled into fists.

“What did he threaten?””

Sarah looked at Emma.

“She was my sister’s daughter.””

I froze.

“What?””

Sarah nodded.

“I wasn’t her biological mother.””

The room became silent.

“I was only supposed to keep her for a few weeks.””

She wiped away tears.

“But then Richard disappeared. He never came back. He left me with a child who didn’t know where she belonged.””

Emma looked down.

“She was the only mother I knew.””

Sarah reached for her hand.

“And I loved her.””

I believed that.

I could see it.

But it still hurt.

Because every person in Emma’s life had been chosen by someone else.

Everyone except me.

I looked at Mark.

“What about your father?””

His jaw tightened.

“We find him.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

My father.

“Claire.””

I closed my eyes.

“Where are you?””

“Somewhere safe.””

“You stole my daughter’s files.””

Silence.

Then:

“I protected you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No. You protected a lie.””

His voice softened.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“Then explain.””

A pause.

“Your daughters were never the target.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“The target was you.””

The words chilled me.

“What are you talking about?””

My father whispered:

“Someone wanted to destroy your life before you ever became a mother.””

I looked around the room.

At Mark.

At Lily.

At Emma.

“Who?””

My father answered:

“Your own sister.””

I froze.

“My sister?””

The line went silent.

May you like

Then he said:

“She’s been waiting sixteen years to take everything from you.””
