Chapter 11: The Truth Hidden Inside the Hospital Records
The safest place we could find was my father’s old cabin.
It was far from town.
No neighbors.
No cameras.
No one who would recognize us.
For the first time in days, we had silence.
But silence did not mean peace.
It only gave our thoughts more room to hurt us.
Lily sat by the fireplace.
Emma sat across from her.
Two sisters.
Two lives.
Separated by lies.
I watched them talk quietly.
At first, they seemed uncomfortable.
They were strangers.
But they shared something nobody else could understand.
They were both victims of the same secret.
“I always wondered if I had a sister,” Lily whispered.
Emma looked at her.
“Me too.””
“You did?””
Emma smiled sadly.
“Sometimes I felt like something was missing.””
Lily looked down.
“I felt that too.””
I turned away.
Because hearing them say those things broke my heart.
A mother is supposed to know when her child is missing something.
But I had spent sixteen years unaware that half of my family existed.
My father walked toward me.
“We need to talk.””
I nodded.
We stepped outside.
The cold air hit my face.
“What else haven’t you told me?””
He looked hurt.
“I deserve that.””
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“I do.””
For once, he didn’t defend himself.
That almost made it worse.
“What happened the night Lily was born?””
My father stared into the distance.
“You were unconscious after delivery.””
“And?””
“Richard came to the hospital.””
I froze.
“Why?””
“He said he wanted to help.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course.””
My father continued.
“He had already planned everything.””
“What did he do?””
“He paid a nurse.””
My stomach turned.
“She changed the records.””
My hands shook.
“And Emma?””
My father closed his eyes.
“She was taken.””
“Where?””
“We found out years later.””
“Sarah?””
He nodded.
“Richard gave her money to keep quiet.””
I felt tears burning my eyes.
“Everyone knew.””
“Not everyone.””
I looked at him.
“Enough people did.””
He lowered his head.
“I was afraid.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because I was.””
His voice broke.
“I had already failed you once.””
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
He hesitated.
Then he said:
“Your mother knew about Victoria.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She knew.””
Another secret.
Another wound.
“Why?””
“Because Victoria was her daughter.””
I stared.
“My mother had another child?””
He nodded.
“Before you.””
The pieces began falling into place.
My mother.
My father.
Victoria.
The lies.
The abandoned child.
The pattern was terrifying.
“My family has been destroying children for generations.””
My father looked away.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
Inside the cabin, Mark found something.
A box.
Hidden behind an old cabinet.
“Claire.””
I walked inside.
He held a stack of documents.
“Your father’s records.””
My father looked shocked.
“I thought I destroyed those.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You destroyed them?””
He looked ashamed.
“I thought it was the only way.””
I opened the first file.
Hospital records.
Financial records.
And then I found something.
A letter from Richard.
I read it.
My hands started shaking.
It said:
“Once Lily reaches eighteen, the trust will transfer. Until then, maintain custody and keep Claire unaware.””
I looked at Mark.
“He planned this.””
Mark looked sick.
“My father…”
Another document fell out.
A medical report.
I read the name.
Then I stopped breathing.
The report was not about Lily.
It was about me.
A test conducted sixteen years earlier.
A DNA test.
I looked at the results.
And the final sentence destroyed me.
“Mother and child relationship confirmed.””
I looked up.
“What is this?””
My father went pale.
“Claire…”
“No.””
I held up the paper.
“What does this mean?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily walked over.
She saw the document.
Her face changed.
“Mom…”
I looked at her.
“Tell me.””
She started crying.
“Grandpa said…”
“What?””
She whispered:
“He said you weren’t supposed to know you were my biological mother.””
The room went silent.
I stared.
“But I am.””
“Yes.””
My father nodded.
“You always were.””
I felt dizzy.
“Then why?””
He whispered:
“Because Richard wanted everyone to believe you adopted Lily.””
I couldn’t understand.
“Why?””
My father looked at me.
“Because if people believed Lily was adopted, the trust would be controlled by someone else.””
The truth was finally becoming clear.
Lily wasn’t just a daughter.

She was the key to everything.
And Richard had spent sixteen years building a cage around her.
