Chapter 5: The Daughter Who Vanished Before I Ever Held Her
I don’t remember sitting down.
One second, I was standing.
The next, I was on the floor surrounded by papers that had destroyed my understanding of my own life.
Twins.
Two babies.
Two daughters.
A story I had never heard.
A life I never lived.
Mark crouched beside me.
“Claire, look at me.””
I couldn’t.
My eyes stayed fixed on the documents.
“This isn’t real.””
My voice sounded distant.
“This cannot be real.””
Lily stood frozen nearby.
She looked terrified.
And suddenly, I understood something.
She wasn’t just afraid of a family secret.
She was afraid because she had been carrying pieces of this truth alone.
I turned toward her.
“Did you know?””
She started crying.
“Only parts.””
“How long?””
“Since I was fourteen.””
Fourteen.
My heart broke.
She had been fourteen years old when my father introduced her to a truth I never knew existed.
“What did he tell you?””
She wiped her face.
“He said you had a sister.””
My breathing stopped.
“What?””
“He said my twin sister was taken away.””
The words echoed.
My twin sister.
I looked down at the paperwork again.
There were two names.
One was Lily.
The other was hidden beneath a black mark.
Someone had tried to cover it.
Someone had tried to erase it.
Mark noticed it too.
“Someone intentionally removed the name.””
My hands trembled.
“Why?””
A sound came from the hallway.
A slow clap.
We all turned.
A man stood at the entrance.
Older.
Tired.
But familiar.
My father.
Robert.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then I stood.
“You.””
His face was filled with sadness.
Not guilt.
Sadness.
And somehow that made me angrier.
“You took her files.””
He looked at Lily.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You were protecting yourself.””
He stepped inside.
“Claire, you don’t understand.””
“I understand enough.””
I held up the documents.
“You lied to me for sixteen years.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I saved your life.””
I laughed.
A painful, broken laugh.
“You stole my daughter’s history.””
He looked at Lily.
“She wasn’t supposed to know.””
Lily stepped back.
“Grandpa…”
His expression changed.
For the first time, he looked ashamed.
“I’m sorry.””
But Lily shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
“You don’t get to say sorry now.””
My father looked older than I had ever seen him.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
I stepped closer.
“You erased a child.””
His face hardened.
“I did what I had to do.””
The anger inside me exploded.
“What happened to my other daughter?””
Silence.
That silence answered everything.
Mark stepped forward.
“Where is she?””
My father looked away.
“I don’t know.””
I stared at him.
“You don’t know?””
He swallowed.
“She was taken.””
“By who?””
He said nothing.
“By who?””
Finally, he whispered:
“Your husband’s family.””
The world stopped.
I looked at Mark.
He looked just as shocked.
“My family?””
My father nodded.
“They knew the truth before you did.””
Mark stepped back.
“No.””
“They were afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
My father looked at me.
“Afraid you would find out that the child you lost was never lost.””
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
He reached into his coat and pulled out an old photograph.
He handed it to me.
I looked down.
A little girl.
About five years old.
Standing beside a woman I didn’t recognize.
But the girl had my eyes.
My face.
My smile.
On the back of the photo was one sentence.
“Her name is Emma.””
My fingers went numb.
Emma.
The daughter I never knew.
The daughter someone had taken from me.
May you like
Then my father said the words that shattered me completely.
“She has been alive this entire time.””
