Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew My Daughter Before I Did

I didn’t sleep that night.

How could I?

My entire life had been rewritten in a single day.

I had spent sixteen years believing Lily was my only child.

I had spent sixteen years believing my family was built on love.

But underneath everything was a hidden foundation of lies.

And somewhere in the world was another daughter.

A daughter who grew up without me.

A daughter who might not even know I existed.

I sat in Lily’s room while she slept.

I watched her breathing.

I remembered holding her as a baby.

I remembered the first time she called me Mom.

And now I wondered.

Had another mother held my other daughter?

Had someone else heard her first words?

Had someone else wiped her tears?

The thought destroyed me.

Around sunrise, Mark found me there.

He sat beside me quietly.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

“I need to tell you something.””

I looked at him.

The fear in his eyes frightened me.

“What?””

He looked down.

“My parents knew.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“When your father mentioned my family…”

He swallowed.

“I remembered something.””

I waited.

“When we got married, my father told me never to ask questions about your family.””

I stared at him.

“You knew?””

“No.””

He shook his head quickly.

“I swear I didn’t know.””

“Then what did you know?””

He closed his eyes.

“My parents had a secret.””

My anger rose.

“Everyone had a secret.””

“I know.””

He looked devastated.

“But I never imagined this.””

I wanted to believe him.

I needed to.

But my trust had been destroyed from every direction.

A knock came at the door.

We both froze.

Nobody was supposed to visit.

Mark opened it.

A woman stood outside.

She looked around forty years old.

Her eyes immediately found me.

And then she started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

I stared.

“Who are you?””

She took a shaky breath.

“My name is Sarah Miller.””

The name meant nothing.

Until she said the next words.

“I’m Emma’s mother.””

My heart stopped.

The woman stepped closer.

“I know you probably hate me.””

I couldn’t speak.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” I whispered.

“I don’t.””

She cried.

“I never wanted this.””

Mark moved beside me.

“Why are you here?””

Sarah looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

“Because Emma found out.””

My blood turned cold.

“She knows?””

Sarah nodded.

“She found the records.””

I grabbed the doorframe.

“Where is she?””

Sarah hesitated.

“She’s outside.””

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then a young woman stepped forward.

She looked about sixteen.

My age estimate was wrong.

She was seventeen.

Almost eighteen.

And she looked at me like she was seeing a ghost.

Because maybe she was.

My daughter.

My missing daughter.

Emma.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I always wondered why I looked like you.””

I covered my mouth.

I couldn’t breathe.

She whispered:

“Why didn’t you come find me?””

That question destroyed me.

Because I had no answer.

I had never searched.

I had never known.

I stepped toward her.

“I didn’t know you existed.””

She looked hurt.

“I know.””

A tear fell down her cheek.

“That’s the worst part.””

Behind me, Lily started crying.

Two daughters.

Two girls.

Both carrying pain created by adults.

I looked between them.

My entire heart was breaking.

Then Emma reached into her bag.

She pulled out an envelope.

“I found this with my records.””

She handed it to me.

The handwriting on the front was familiar.

My father’s.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Only one sentence was written.

“Claire, if you are reading this, it means the truth has finally escaped.””

My hands shook as I continued.

“Your daughters were separated because someone wanted control over your family’s future.””

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Emma’s face changed.

Because she already knew something.

Something worse.

She whispered:

“Mom…”

I turned toward her.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“The person who ordered them to take me…”

Her voice cracked.

“It was someone you trusted.””

I held my breath.

“Who?””

Emma looked at Mark.

May you like

And then she said:

“Your husband’s father.”” :::
