Chapter 14: The Final Battle for the Family We Almost Lost
Anna didn’t forgive me immediately.
I didn’t expect her to.
Forgiveness was not something I could demand.
I had spent years missing her without knowing she was missing me.
But she had spent years knowing something was missing.
That pain belonged to her.
Not me.
We brought Anna back to the cabin.
The first night was difficult.
Three daughters.
One mother.
And sixteen years of stolen time between us.
Lily tried to talk to her.
Emma tried too.
But Anna kept her distance.
Not because she hated them.
Because she was afraid.
“I don’t know how to be part of this,” she admitted.
I sat beside her.
“You don’t have to know yet.””
She looked at me.
“What if I’m angry?””
“Then be angry.””
“What if I don’t trust you?””
My heart hurt.
“Then I’ll spend the rest of my life earning it.””
That was the only promise I could make.
The next morning, we received news.
Richard had been found.
But he wasn’t arrested.
Not yet.
Because he had prepared for this.
He had lawyers.
Documents.
Money.
He had spent years building protection around himself.
“He thinks he can win,” Mark said.
I looked at him.
“He always has.””
My father walked in holding a folder.
“We have something better.””
Inside was evidence.
Bank records.
Hospital payments.
Fake documents.
Everything Richard had done.
Everything he had hidden.
But there was one problem.
“The original records are missing,” my father said.
I looked at him.
“Meaning?””
“Meaning Richard can claim everything is fake.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“I know where they are.””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked exhausted.
“But you won’t like it.””
“Where?””
She took a breath.
“In his house.””
The same house where Anna had lived.
My stomach turned.
“You want us to go back?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard never trusted anyone.””
Victoria looked at me.
“He kept everything important close.””
That evening, we went there.
Not to fight.
Not to confront.
To find proof.
The house felt different now.
A place that once looked beautiful suddenly looked like a prison.
Anna stood beside me.
“This was my home.””
I squeezed her hand.
“I’m sorry.””
She looked at me.
“I know.””
That was the first time she said it without anger.
Inside Richard’s office, we searched.
Then Mark found something.
A hidden compartment.
Inside were files.
Hundreds of them.
Records.
Photos.
Letters.
Proof.
Then I found one folder.
My name.
Again.
Inside was a letter.
From Richard.
I opened it.
“Claire,
You were always supposed to be mine.””
I felt sick.
“He’s insane.””
The letter continued.
“I believed your family owed me. I believed your children were the only way to take what I deserved.””
My hands shook.
“He thought my daughters were property.””
Mark looked at the final page.
“Claire.””
I turned.
The last sentence read:
“When Lily turns eighteen, everything changes.””
My blood froze.
“What?””
Mark pointed.
“The date.””
I looked.
Tomorrow.
Tomorrow was Lily’s eighteenth birthday.
Richard wasn’t just chasing us.
He was racing against time.
“He planned everything for tomorrow.””
We rushed back.
But we were too late.
The cabin door was open.
The lights were off.
My heart stopped.
“Lily?””
No answer.
Then I saw it.
A note on the table.
My hands shook as I opened it.
“Come alone if you want your daughter back.””
I felt the world go silent.
Because after everything…
After finding Emma.
After finding Anna.
May you like
After uncovering every lie…
Richard had taken Lily.
