Chapter 8: The Passenger Seat
Detective Harris arrived at noon.
He looked different from the man I remembered at my doorstep.
That day, he had been the messenger of the worst news of my life.
Today, he looked like someone carrying a burden.
He sat across from me at the kitchen table.
The same table where Daniel had carved Noah’s initials into the wood by accident while helping him build a toy airplane.
I hated that even ordinary things had become painful.
“I need you to understand something,” Detective Harris said.
“I’m listening.””
“The accident is still officially considered a traffic collision.””
“But?””
He looked at Daniel’s phone.
“But there were inconsistencies.””
“What kind?””
He opened a folder.
Inside were photographs.
The road.
The car.
The tire marks.
I looked away.
I wasn’t ready to see the vehicle that had taken my husband from me.
“Daniel’s car went off the road at approximately 6:42 a.m.””
He pointed to the picture.
“However, witnesses reported another vehicle leaving the area around that time.””
“Did you identify it?””
“Not yet.””
I thought about Margaret.
Victor.
Claire.
The people who wanted me gone.
“Do you think someone killed my husband?””
Detective Harris didn’t answer immediately.
That told me everything.
“I think Daniel knew he was in danger.””
My eyes burned.
“He knew.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
“Because we didn’t know who we could trust.””
That sentence hit harder than anything else.
Even the police were afraid someone was interfering.
“What about the passenger?””
Detective Harris looked down.
“That’s where things get complicated.””
“Why?””
“Because we found DNA.””
My heart stopped.
“And?””
“It doesn’t match Daniel.””
“Who does it match?””
“We’re waiting on confirmation.””
I leaned forward.
“But you have a guess.””
He looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Victor Vale.””
The room became silent.
Not the peaceful kind.
The kind that comes before a storm.
I felt sick.
Claire’s husband.
The man who stood behind her at every family gathering.
The man who pretended to be invisible.
“He was in the car with Daniel?””
“We don’t know exactly.””
“But his DNA was there.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the stairs.
At Noah’s room.
At the life Daniel and I built.
How could someone inside his own family do this?
“Why would Victor hurt Daniel?””
Detective Harris leaned back.
“That’s what we need to find out.””
I remembered the messages.
The foundation.
The missing money.
The recordings.
“He was stealing from the charity.””
Detective Harris looked surprised.
“You know about that?””
“I found Daniel’s files.””
That changed everything.
“Where?””
“On his phone.””
He looked concerned.
“Mrs. Vale, you need to be careful with that phone.””
“Why?””
“Because whoever Daniel was investigating may know you have it.””
I looked at him.
“They already do.””
I showed him the messages.
His face became serious.
“When did you receive these?””
“After Margaret came to my house.””
“Margaret?””
“Yes.””
He wrote something down.
“Mrs. Vale, did Margaret know about Daniel’s investigation before his death?””
“I think so.””
Detective Harris closed the folder.
“Then we have a bigger problem.””
“What?””
“If Margaret knew Daniel was investigating her, and Victor was connected to the accident…”
He stopped.
But I understood.
The entire family could be involved.
That evening, I made a decision.
I wasn’t going to wait for them to come after me.
I was going to find the truth first.
I opened Daniel’s files again.
This time, I searched every name.
Margaret.
Victor.
Claire.
Then I found one I hadn’t noticed before.
My own.
*Emily Vale — Timeline*
My hands shook.
Why had Daniel made a file about me?
I opened it.
The first line made my blood run cold.
*Protect Emily from the truth until I confirm who is responsible.*
I kept reading.
There were notes.
Dates.
Conversations.
And then:
*Emily is being watched.*
I stopped.
No.
I read it again.
*Emily is being watched.*
The next line:
*She doesn’t know.*
My heart started racing.
Daniel had been protecting me from something happening before his death.
Something involving me.
Something involving someone watching my family.
Then the final note appeared.
Written two days before the accident.
*If they realize Emily knows, they will use Noah.*
I dropped the phone.
Because suddenly the threat wasn’t about money.
It wasn’t about reputation.
It wasn’t about the foundation.
It was about my son.

And whoever Daniel feared…
knew exactly where my heart was.
