Chapter 12: The Son Daniel Protected
I didn’t remember telling Margaret to leave.
I only remembered opening the door.
I remembered Victor saying something.
I remembered Margaret walking away with that horrible calm expression.
But the words stayed.
*The truth about Noah.*
For the entire night, I searched Daniel’s phone.
Every file.
Every folder.
Every message.
Anything mentioning our son.
Nothing.
That scared me more.
Because Daniel had documented everything.
The money.
The foundation.
The investigation.
The threats.
But not Noah.
Why?
At 2:13 in the morning, I found something hidden.
A password-protected file.
The name:
*The One Thing Emily Must Know*
My hands shook as I typed every password I knew.
Our anniversary.
No.
Noah’s birthday.
No.
Daniel’s birthday.
No.
Then I remembered something.
The first house we bought.
The first place we called ours.
I typed the address.
The file opened.
There was one video.
Daniel.
Again.
My husband.
Looking directly at me.
“Emily.””
I covered my mouth.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words nearly destroyed me.
“I’m sorry I waited.””
He looked exhausted.
“I wanted to tell you. I tried.””
A pause.
“But every time I got close, I realized the danger was bigger than I thought.””
I leaned toward the screen.
“Daniel, what did you know?””
His voice shook.
“About Noah.””
My heart stopped.
“I need you to understand something.””
The video continued.
“Noah is my son. He is our son. Nothing changes that.””
I started crying.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked down.
“There is something about his birth I never told you.””
I stopped breathing.
No.
No.
“Emily, when Noah was born, the hospital made a mistake.””
The room became silent.
“They mixed up records.””
My hands went cold.
“Daniel…”
“I found out two years ago.””
I stared at the screen.
“But I didn’t tell you because I was investigating.””
The words barely registered.
Investigating?
“What?””
Daniel continued.
“I discovered someone had changed Noah’s records intentionally.””
I couldn’t move.
“Why?””
He looked terrified.
“Because someone wanted to hide who his biological father was.””
The phone almost fell from my hand.
No.
Impossible.
Daniel’s voice became softer.
“But Emily, listen to me.””
I forced myself to keep watching.
“Biology does not decide who your father is.””
Tears blurred my vision.
“He is my son.””
I whispered:
“Daniel…”
“But someone changed those records for a reason.””
The video paused.
Then Daniel said the sentence that changed everything.
“Margaret knew before I did.””
I stopped.
My entire body went cold.
Margaret knew?
About Noah?
The video continued.
“She has known since the beginning.””
I covered my mouth.
“No.””
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“I think she used Noah’s birth records to control me.””
My mind raced.
Control him?
How?
Then Daniel explained.
“Margaret told me if I ever left her family, she would reveal the truth.””
I felt sick.
“The truth about Noah.””
The screen blurred.
“Daniel…”
He continued.
“But the truth is not what she thinks.””
A pause.
“The truth is that Noah is mine.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Not because of DNA.””
“Because I was there.””
“Because I held him the first night.””
“Because I taught him to ride a bike.””
“Because I love him.””
I cried harder.
Then Daniel’s expression changed.
Serious.
“Emily, there is one thing you need to know.””
The final seconds of the video.
“Margaret didn’t create this secret.””
“She discovered it.””
A pause.
“And the person who changed Noah’s records is still alive.””
The screen went black.
I sat there.
Unable to breathe.
Unable to move.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No one spoke at first.
Then a voice whispered:
“Emily.””
I knew that voice.
Claire.
“Where are you?””
Her breathing was shaky.
“I found something.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“The person who changed Noah’s records…”
My grip tightened.
“Who?””
Claire whispered:
“It was Daniel’s father.””
My heart stopped.
And then she said:
“But he didn’t do it before he died.””
May you like
Silence.
“He did it after.””
