Chapter 14: The Last Recording Daniel Left Behind

I found Claire’s car two miles from her house.

Empty.

The driver’s door was open.

Her phone was on the seat.

And the storage unit key was gone.

Someone had gotten to her first.

I called Detective Harris immediately.

This time, I didn’t explain.

I demanded.

“I need help.””

He arrived within minutes.

One look at the car, and his expression changed.

“She disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Did she tell you where she was going?””

“No.””

I hesitated.

Then:

“She told me something about Daniel’s father.””

Detective Harris became very still.

“What?””

I told him everything.

Not every detail.

Not yet.

But enough.

When I finished, he looked toward the empty road.

“We need to talk about the original investigation.””

“What investigation?””

“The one I wasn’t allowed to finish.””

I stared.

“By who?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t have to.

“Margaret?””

He nodded.

“She had influence.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone always says influence when they mean power.””

Detective Harris didn’t disagree.

Then he pulled something from his folder.

A photograph.

A man standing outside a building.

Older.

Gray hair.

My hands went cold.

Because I recognized him.

Not from meeting him.

From Daniel’s family photos.

“That’s Daniel’s father.””

Detective Harris nodded.

“Alive.””

“When was this taken?””

“Six months ago.””

My heart stopped.

Six months.

Daniel’s father had been alive six months ago.

And everyone believed he was dead.

“Where is he now?””

“We’re trying to find out.””

I looked at Daniel’s phone.

Then something clicked.

The final recording.

The one Daniel made before his death.

I had only listened halfway.

Because the truth about Noah overwhelmed me.

I opened it again.

Daniel’s voice filled the car.

“Emily, if you found this file, then you know about Noah.””

I cried silently.

“But there’s another thing.””

A pause.

“My father contacted me.””

Detective Harris looked at me.

I turned the volume up.

“He told me he was afraid.””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“He told me Margaret wasn’t just hiding money.””

My heart pounded.

“She was hiding him.””

The recording continued.

“He said the only reason he stayed away was because he believed Margaret would hurt everyone if he came back.””

A pause.

“Especially Noah.””

I covered my mouth.

Then Daniel said:

“Emily, I need you to understand something.””

The sound of his breathing.

“I didn’t marry into a complicated family.””

“I married into a dangerous one.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Detective Harris looked at me.

“Daniel knew.””

“Yes.””

“He knew something was going to happen.””

“Yes.””

I looked out the window.

“And he still went to that meeting.””

Detective Harris nodded.

“Because he thought he could stop it.””

A notification appeared on Daniel’s phone.

A message.

From Claire.

My heart jumped.

She had sent it moments before.

Only three words.

*I found him.*

Then another message.

*He’s alive.*

Then:

*Margaret knows.*

Detective Harris stood.

“We need to move.””

But before we could leave, another message arrived.

A photo.

Claire.

Standing beside an older man.

Daniel’s father.

Alive.

And behind them…

Margaret.

My blood went cold.

Because Margaret wasn’t chasing the truth.

May you like

She was controlling it.

The entire time.
