Chapter 5: The Brother Who Knew Too Much
Ethan arrived forty minutes later.
He didn’t come inside immediately.
He sat in his truck outside our house for almost five minutes.
I watched from the window.
That scared me more than if he had rushed in.
People hesitate when they know they are about to change someone’s life.
Finally, he walked to the door.
Ethan had known Daniel since college.
Before me.
Before the business.
Before the house.
Before Noah.
He was one of the few people Margaret couldn’t manipulate.
Because Ethan had no reason to impress her.
He stepped inside and looked around.
His eyes landed on Daniel’s picture.
“I still can’t believe he’s gone.””
Neither could I.
I offered him coffee.
He refused.
We sat at the kitchen table.
The same place where Daniel and I had planned vacations.
Paid bills.
Helped Noah with homework.
Now it was where I was learning my marriage had secrets.
“Tell me everything.””
Ethan looked at me.
“You’re sure?””
“No.””
The honesty surprised him.
“I’m not sure about anything anymore.””
He nodded slowly.
“That’s exactly what Daniel was afraid of.””
“What was he investigating?””
Ethan rubbed his face.
“His father’s death.””
I already knew.
But hearing someone else say it made it real.
“Everyone said it was a heart attack.””
“That’s what Margaret wanted everyone to believe.””
My stomach tightened.
“What really happened?””
Ethan looked toward the stairs.
Checking if Noah could hear.
Then he lowered his voice.
“Daniel found financial records showing his father was planning to expose someone.””
“Who?””
“Someone in the family.””
I stared at him.
“Margaret?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
He didn’t have to.
“Why would she?””
“Money.””
The word sounded ugly.
Simple.
Too simple.
“Daniel’s father discovered millions missing from the foundation.””
I looked down.
“The money?””
Ethan nodded.
“Some of it went to Victor.””
My heart sank.
“Why?””
“That’s what Daniel was trying to find out.””
I stood up and walked to the counter.
I needed to move.
Because sitting still made everything feel impossible.
“Why didn’t Daniel tell me?””
Ethan’s expression softened.
“Because he loved you.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does.””
He leaned forward.
“Daniel knew what would happen if Margaret found out he was investigating.””
I laughed bitterly.
“She already hated me.””
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
His voice became serious.
“Margaret didn’t hate you because she thought you weren’t good enough.””
I looked at him.
“She hated you because Daniel chose you.””
That sentence hit harder than I expected.
“Daniel spent his whole life trying to make Margaret proud. Then you came along, and suddenly he didn’t need her approval anymore.””
I looked away.
“She blamed me for that?””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
“And when Daniel started questioning the foundation, she blamed you for that too.””
I sat back down.
“What about Victor?””
Ethan hesitated.
That hesitation bothered me.
“What?””
“There’s something else.””
“Tell me.””
“Daniel thought Victor wasn’t working alone.””
A chill moved through me.
“Who else?””
Ethan looked at the phone on the table.
Then at me.
“I think you already know.””
I felt sick.
Claire.
My mind immediately went there.
“No.””
Ethan didn’t say anything.
“She’s my sister-in-law.””
“And Margaret is Daniel’s mother.””
I looked at him.
“People protect family.””
“Even when family is wrong?””
“Especially then.””
The words sat between us.
I picked up Daniel’s phone.
“There’s one more thing.””
I showed him the video.
The hidden files.
Ethan’s face changed.
“Daniel gave you access?””
“Yes.””
He stared at the folder name.
“For Emily.””
His eyes became wet.
“He really loved you.””
I looked down.
“I thought I knew him.””
“You did.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I knew the man who came home. I didn’t know the man fighting a war alone.””
Ethan was quiet.
Then he said something that made my blood freeze.
“Emily.””
“What?””
“Daniel wasn’t planning to expose them.””
I looked up.
“What do you mean?””
“He was planning to confront them.””
“Same thing.””
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“Exposure is public. Confrontation is personal.””
He leaned closer.
“Daniel believed someone in that family would confess.””
My phone suddenly vibrated.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
My heart dropped.
Because the message only contained four words.
*Stop looking where he died.*
I showed Ethan.
His face turned pale.
“Emily…”
“What?””
He pointed at the screen.
“That’s the same number Daniel sent me from the night before he died.””
I stared at the message.
May you like
Then another one arrived.
*Or you’ll lose what he left behind.*
