Chapter 11: The Secret Daniel Took to His Grave
Darkness changed everything.
A house you know becomes unfamiliar when the lights disappear.
Every shadow becomes a person.
Every sound becomes a warning.
I grabbed Noah’s hand.
“Stay behind me.””
Victor moved toward the window.
“She’s here.””
I looked at him.
“Margaret?””
He nodded.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“She wouldn’t come herself.””
Victor looked at me.
“That’s where you’re wrong.””
A sound came from downstairs.
The front door closing.
Slowly.
Someone had entered.
Someone who knew the house.
Someone who wasn’t afraid.
Victor whispered:
“She’s always been like this.””
“Like what?””
“Like she owns everything.””
I looked at Noah.
Then at Victor.
“You’re going to help me.””
He looked surprised.
“Why?””
“Because if you’re lying, I’ll find out.””
A strange expression crossed his face.
“Daniel said the same thing.””
Before I could respond, Margaret called from downstairs.
“Emily.””
Her voice traveled through the house.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
That scared me more than anger.
“Come downstairs.””
I didn’t answer.
“Emily.””
A pause.
“You really think Daniel loved you enough to tell you everything?””
My stomach tightened.
Victor looked at me.
“She’s trying to get inside your head.””
“She’s already been there for years.””
I slowly walked toward the stairs.
Victor followed.
“No.””
I looked back.
“If she came here for the phone, she’ll keep coming.””
I held Daniel’s phone tighter.
“But she didn’t come for the phone.””
Victor looked confused.
“She came because she knows what’s on it.””
When we reached the bottom of the stairs, Margaret stood in the living room.
No fear.
No panic.
Just control.
Like this was a business meeting.
“You’ve caused a lot of trouble, Emily.””
I stared at her.
“You killed Daniel.””
Her expression didn’t change.
“No.””
“You sent him to that road.””
“Yes.””
The admission shocked me.
Even Victor looked surprised.
“Why?””
Margaret looked at Daniel’s picture on the shelf.
“Because he was going to destroy everything.””
“Your reputation?””
“My family.””
I laughed.
“Your family?””
She looked at me.
“You never understood what being a Vale meant.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“I understood exactly.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
I held up the phone.
“It means protecting the person who hurts you. It means hiding the truth. It means pretending everything is perfect while everyone is falling apart.””
For the first time, Margaret looked wounded.
Only for a moment.
Then it disappeared.
“Daniel was weak.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“He was the strongest person I knew.””
“He was emotional.””
“He loved people.””
“And that was his weakness.””
The words cut deeper than I expected.
Because they revealed something.
Margaret didn’t understand love.
Not real love.
She understood loyalty.
Obedience.
Control.
But not love.
“You used him.””
Her face hardened.
“I raised him.””
“You owned him.””
Silence.
Then Margaret said:
“Your husband found out the truth about his father.””
I waited.
“He found out his father wasn’t the man everyone believed.””
“What does that mean?””
“My husband made mistakes.””
Victor looked away.
Margaret continued.
“He borrowed money. He hid things. He created problems.””
“Did he die because of that?””
Her silence answered.
“No.””
She looked at Victor.
“People like him always create consequences.””
Victor stepped forward.
“You knew.””
Margaret looked at him coldly.
“You were supposed to keep quiet.””
“You used me.””
“I gave you a chance.””
I stared between them.
The pieces finally connected.
Victor wasn’t the mastermind.
He was another person Margaret controlled.
Someone she pulled into her lies.
Someone she could sacrifice.
“Who killed Daniel?””
Margaret looked at me.
And smiled.
“You still think this is about Daniel.””
I felt a chill.
“What?””
She walked closer.
“This has always been about Noah.””
My blood froze.
“What did you say?””
“Daniel’s biggest mistake was leaving everything to you.””
I stepped forward.
“Stay away from my son.””
Margaret smiled.
“You don’t know what Daniel left behind.””
I looked at the phone.
The files.
The recordings.
“What did he leave?””
She whispered:
“The truth about Noah.””
The world stopped.
Noah grabbed my hand.
“Mom?””
I looked at Margaret.
“What are you talking about?””
Margaret smiled.
And for the first time…
May you like
I saw victory on her face.
“Ask Daniel.””
