Chapter 6: The Woman Who Wanted Daniel Silent

I didn’t sleep.

Not because I was scared.

At least, that’s what I told myself.

I stayed awake because every time I closed my eyes, I saw Daniel.

Not the Daniel from the funeral photo.

Not the smiling husband everyone remembered.

The Daniel from the video.

The Daniel who knew something was wrong.

The Daniel who looked directly into a camera because he was afraid he might never get another chance to talk to me.

At 4:17 in the morning, I finally opened the final file in the folder.

A voice recording.

No title.

Just a date.

The day before Daniel died.

I pressed play.

At first, there was silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

“If you’re hearing this, I failed.””

I closed my eyes.

“No.””

His voice continued.

“I need you to know something, Emily. Everything I did was to protect you and Noah.””

A pause.

“But there’s one thing I need you to understand.””

The sound of papers moving.

“Margaret isn’t the only person who betrayed us.””

My eyes opened.

My heart started racing.

Daniel continued.

“I spent years believing the biggest threat came from outside our family.””

Another pause.

“I was wrong.””

The recording ended.

That was it.

Thirty seconds.

Thirty seconds that destroyed every assumption I had left.

I replayed it.

Again.

And again.

The biggest threat didn’t come from outside the family.

It came from inside.

A sound came from upstairs.

Noah.

I quickly turned off the phone.

He walked into the kitchen wearing Daniel’s old sweatshirt.

The sleeves were too long.

He looked smaller than he had yesterday.

“Mom?””

“Yeah?””

“Are we leaving?””

The question surprised me.

“Leaving where?””

“Home.””

I swallowed.

“No.””

“But Grandma said the house belongs to them now.””

My blood ran cold.

“She said what?””

Noah looked down.

“At the funeral. She said Dad’s family would take care of everything.””

Everything.

That word.

I suddenly understood.

Margaret wasn’t just trying to hurt me.

She was trying to remove me.

From the house.

From Daniel’s belongings.

From his life.

Before I could answer, someone knocked.

Three times.

Slow.

Confident.

I looked through the window.

Margaret.

Standing on my porch.

At four-thirty in the morning.

No.

Not Margaret.

Someone stood behind her.

Victor.

I opened the door but kept the chain locked.

“What do you want?””

Margaret smiled.

Not kindly.

“You have something that belongs to us.””

I looked at Daniel’s phone in my hand.

“No.””

Her smile disappeared.

“You don’t understand what you’re involved in.””

“I understand enough.””

Victor stepped forward.

“Emily, don’t make this harder.””

I looked at him.

The quiet one.

The harmless one.

The man whose name appeared in Daniel’s files.

“You stole from the foundation.””

His face changed.

Only for a second.

But enough.

Margaret looked at him.

And I saw something.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“You found Daniel’s files,” Victor whispered.

I didn’t answer.

I didn’t need to.

Because his reaction told me everything.

Margaret stepped closer.

“Where is the phone?””

“No.””

“Emily.””

“No.””

For the first time, I saw anger explode across her face.

“You have no idea what Daniel put you in the middle of.””

I looked directly at her.

“He died trying to protect me.””

Her expression hardened.

“No.””

A cold smile appeared.

“He died because he refused to listen.””

The words stayed there.

Heavy.

Impossible.

“What does that mean?””

Margaret looked at Victor.

Then back at me.

“Ask yourself why Daniel was driving that road that night.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

She stepped away.

“You think his death was an accident?””

The porch light flickered.

Behind me, Noah gasped.

And in that moment, every piece of my life shattered.

Because I realized something worse than betrayal.

Daniel wasn’t just hiding a secret.

He might have been running from someone.

Someone close.

May you like

Someone who wanted him silent.

Someone who knew exactly where he would be the night he died.
