Chapter 9: When the Monster Lost Control
Adrian’s first public statement came forty-eight hours after Claire gave us the documents.
It was exactly what we expected.
A performance.
He stood outside his company headquarters wearing a perfectly tailored suit.
The same confident expression.
The same controlled voice.
The same fake sincerity.
“I deeply regret that my private family situation has been misunderstood.””
Misunderstood.
That word almost made me laugh.
He continued.
“I have always been committed to supporting women and protecting families.””
I stared at the screen.
The irony was almost unbelievable.
The man who slapped his wife at a charity event was giving a speech about protecting women.
The media didn’t buy it.
Neither did the public.
But Adrian wasn’t speaking to them.
He was speaking to investors.
To business partners.
To anyone who could still save him.
Then he said the one thing I expected.
“My wife and I are currently going through a difficult period, and I hope everyone respects our privacy.””
My phone immediately started ringing.
Marcus.
I answered.
“You heard it?””
“Yes.””
“He’s trying to make this a marriage problem.””
“Exactly.””
I looked at the television.
“He wants people to think this is just a personal disagreement.””
“And not criminal activity.””
I nodded.
Then Julian called.
His voice was urgent.
“Turn on the news.””
I switched channels.
The headline changed instantly.
*ADRIAN CROSS FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST WIFE FOR DEFAMATION*
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
“He’s suing me?””
“Yes.””
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was predictable.
“When people lose control, they attack the person who knows the truth.””
Marcus’s voice was calm.
“He’s trying to scare you.””
“It won’t work.””
“I know.””
A pause.
“But there’s something else.””
“What?””
“He requested access to your personal records.””
My expression changed.
“Why?””
“We don’t know yet.””
But I did.
Suddenly, memories returned.
Adrian asking strange questions.
Adrian wanting access to accounts.
Adrian insisting on handling paperwork.
My entire marriage.
All those small moments I ignored.
They weren’t random.
They were preparation.
“He wasn’t just hiding money,” I whispered.
Julian went silent.
“He was preparing to take mine.””
The room felt cold.
Eight years.
Eight years married to someone who didn’t just betray my heart.
He had been planning against me.
My brothers arrived within twenty minutes.
Marcus looked furious.
“He underestimated you.””
“No.””
I looked at the television.
“He underestimated himself.””
That night, Adrian sent me one final message.
Not an apology.
Not regret.
A warning.
*You have no idea what you started.*
I stared at the words.
Once, that message would have terrified me.
Now?
I felt something else.
Determination.
I typed one reply.
*Neither do you.*
Then I turned off my phone.
Because for the first time in my life…
I wasn’t waiting for Adrian Cross to decide what happened next.
May you like
He was waiting for me.
And he had no idea what was coming.
