Chapter 13: The Last Lie Adrian Tried to Protect

Six months after Adrian Cross was taken away in handcuffs, people still talked about the night everything changed.

The gala.

The slap.

The investigation.

The downfall of one of the most respected businessmen in the country.

But what most people didn’t understand was that the hardest part didn’t happen in the courtroom.

It happened afterward.

Because when the noise disappeared, when the cameras moved on to another story, and when the world stopped watching…

I had to figure out who I was without Adrian.

For eight years, my identity had been connected to his.

Mrs. Adrian Cross.

The billionaire’s wife.

The woman standing beside the successful man.

People knew his name.

They didn’t know mine.

And strangely enough, that was the first thing I wanted to change.

Not because I wanted fame.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I wanted to exist.

Just as myself.

I moved into a small apartment downtown.

It wasn’t a mansion.

It didn’t have marble floors or a private garden.

The kitchen was tiny.

The view wasn’t impressive.

But every morning, when I woke up, I felt something I hadn’t felt in years.

Peace.

Real peace.

Nobody was checking where I was.

Nobody was asking who I talked to.

Nobody was deciding what I should wear or who I should impress.

For the first time, my life belonged to me.

I started working with organizations that helped women leaving controlling relationships.

At first, I wasn’t sure I was qualified.

My story was just one story.

But then I met women who told me they saw themselves in me.

Women who stayed quiet because they were afraid.

Women who believed leaving meant failure.

Women who thought love required them to disappear.

And I realized something.

My experience had a purpose.

Not because Adrian hurt me.

But because I survived it.

One morning, I received a letter.

No return address.

No name.

Just my name written on the envelope.

I immediately knew who it was from.

Adrian.

I stared at it for several minutes before opening it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Not an email.

Not a message through his attorney.

A real letter.

For some reason, that bothered me more.

Because handwriting felt personal.

And I wasn’t sure I wanted anything personal from him anymore.

I began reading.

I know you probably don’t want to hear from me.

I almost stopped there.

But I continued.

I have spent months trying to understand how everything went wrong.

I paused.

How everything went wrong.

Not how he destroyed everything.

Not how he hurt people.

How everything went wrong.

Even now, he struggled to say the words.

*I blamed everyone else for years. My competitors. My employees.

The media. You.*

My eyes narrowed.

But the truth is, I was the problem.

That sentence surprised me.

Not because it fixed anything.

It didn’t.

But because it was the first time Adrian had admitted fault.

I destroyed the only person who actually loved me.

I placed the letter down.

For a moment, I felt sadness.

Not for him.

For the woman I used to be.

The woman who would have waited years to hear those words.

The woman who would have forgiven too quickly.

I picked up the letter again.

The final paragraph caught my attention.

There is one thing you still don’t know.

My expression changed.

Of course.

Even now.

Another secret.

The money I hid wasn’t only for myself.

I frowned.

What did that mean?

I was protecting someone.

I immediately called Marcus.

He answered quickly.

“What happened?””

“Adrian sent me a letter.””

Silence.

“That’s never good.””

“He says there’s someone else involved.””

A pause.

“Send me a copy.””

I did.

Within an hour, all three of my brothers were reviewing it.

Julian was the first to speak.

“There’s something strange.””

“What?””

“He’s not lying.””

I looked at him.

“How do you know?””

“Because this letter sounds different.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“He’s still manipulating, but there is one section that feels genuine.””

I looked at the paper.

“The part about protecting someone?””

“Yes.””

Caleb leaned forward.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Because we all knew the truth.

Adrian Cross had spent his entire life hiding secrets.

And the final one was probably the biggest.

Two days later, we discovered the name.

Daniel Cross.

Adrian’s younger half-brother.

Someone almost nobody knew existed.

The discovery shocked all of us.

“Why didn’t anyone know about him?”” I asked.

Marcus looked through the records.

“Because Adrian made sure nobody did.””

“Why?””

Julian answered quietly.

“Because Daniel was the reason Adrian became who he was.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Julian closed the file.

“Adrian’s father abandoned Daniel’s mother years ago.””

I frowned.

“That’s sad, but what does it have to do with Adrian?””

“Adrian took responsibility for Daniel.””

A pause.

“He was seventeen.””

That surprised me.

For a moment, I saw a different side of Adrian.

A teenager forced to become an adult.

A young man carrying a burden he never asked for.

But then Marcus added:

“And instead of dealing with that pain, he turned it into control.””

I understood.

Pain explained behavior.

It didn’t excuse it.

We found Daniel living quietly in another state.

When we contacted him, he agreed to meet.

And when I saw him…

I understood why Adrian hid him.

May you like

Because Daniel was the one person who could tell the world something Adrian never wanted known.

The truth about where the monster came from.
