Chapter 6: The Woman Behind the Name
Three days after the gala, I returned to the Cross mansion.
Not because I wanted Adrian.
Not because I missed him.
Because I needed to collect what belonged to me.
When I arrived, the house looked exactly the same.
The same marble floors.
The same expensive artwork.
The same perfectly arranged furniture.
But somehow, it felt empty.
Because I finally saw it for what it was.
A beautiful cage.
The staff greeted me quietly.
Most of them looked uncomfortable.
They had seen the news.
They knew.
I walked upstairs to our bedroom.
The room where I had cried silently.
The room where I spent countless nights waiting for Adrian to come home.
The room where I discovered lipstick stains on his shirts.
The room where I convinced myself every marriage had problems.
I opened the closet.
Half of the space belonged to him.
Half belonged to me.
But after eight years, I realized something.
I had slowly disappeared.
My clothes.
My hobbies.
My dreams.
Everything had been pushed aside for Adrian.
I packed slowly.
Not because I was sad.
Because I was remembering.
Every item told a story.
The necklace he gave me after our first anniversary.
The dress I wore when he promised we would grow old together.
The photograph from our wedding.
I picked up the picture.
For a moment, I saw two young people smiling.
Two people who believed love was enough.
Then I looked closer.
And I realized something.
Even in that picture, I was looking at Adrian.
Waiting for his approval.
Waiting for his happiness.
I wasn’t standing beside him.
I was standing behind him.
A knock came at the door.
I turned.
Vanessa stood there.
Alone.
No designer dress.
No confident smile.
Just a woman who looked terrified.
“What do you want?””
She swallowed.
“I need to talk.””
I almost refused.
But something about her expression stopped me.
“Five minutes.””
She entered slowly.
“I know you hate me.””
I didn’t answer.
Because I wasn’t sure I did.
Hate required energy.
And I had spent enough energy on Adrian.
“I didn’t know everything,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“You knew enough.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
A painful silence filled the room.
Then she said something I never expected.
“He told me you were leaving him.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He said your marriage was already over.””
I stared at her.
“He said you were just staying because of money.””
The anger that rose inside me wasn’t toward Vanessa.
It was toward Adrian.
Because even now, he was rewriting the story.
“He made me believe you were the problem.””
I laughed quietly.
“That’s what he does.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology surprised me.
Not because it fixed anything.
It didn’t.
But because it was the first honest thing I had heard from someone connected to Adrian in a long time.
I nodded.
“Thank you.””
She looked confused.
“That’s it?””
“What do you want me to say?””
“I don’t know.””
I looked around the room.
“At this point, neither do I.””
She left a few minutes later.
And I finished packing.
When I walked downstairs, I saw Adrian standing in the entryway.
Waiting.
My heart didn’t race.
My hands didn’t shake.
For the first time, seeing him didn’t make me afraid.
It made me realize how far I had come.
“You’re really leaving.””
I picked up my suitcase.
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“I loved you.””
I stopped.
Because once, those words would have meant everything.
But now?
They meant nothing without action.
“You loved having me.””
His expression changed.
“That’s not true.””
“It is.””
I stepped closer.
“You loved a wife who stayed quiet.””
I looked directly into his eyes.
“You loved a woman who forgave everything.””
A pause.
“But you never loved a woman who could stand against you.””
He had no answer.
Because for the first time…
He was looking at the real me.
Not the wife he created.
Not the woman he controlled.
Me.
And that was the one thing he never prepared for.
I walked out of the house.
Leaving behind the name Cross.
Leaving behind the marriage.
Leaving behind the woman I used to be.
But as I stepped into the sunlight, my phone buzzed.
A message from Julian.
Three words.
*“We found more.””*
I stopped walking.
Because I knew this wasn’t over.

Adrian’s empire was falling.
But the darkest secrets had not even been revealed yet.
