Chapter 7: The Secret Hidden Beneath His Perfect Marriage

The message from Julian stayed on my screen for almost a minute.

*We found more.*

Two simple words.

But they carried the weight of everything I had spent eight years refusing to see.

I stood outside the mansion I once called home, holding my suitcase in one hand and my phone in the other.

The afternoon sun reflected off the massive glass windows of the Cross estate.

A place that once represented success.

Security.

A future.

Now it looked exactly like what it had always been.

A monument built on deception.

I called Julian immediately.

He answered before the first ring finished.

“You’re outside?””

I looked back at the house.

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then his voice softened.

“Are you okay?””

That question almost broke me.

Not because I wasn’t okay.

Because nobody had asked me that in years.

Not honestly.

Not without expecting something in return.

“I’m fine.””

Julian sighed.

“You always say that when you’re not.””

I smiled sadly.

“That’s because I’m a Hale.””

“Exactly.””

I could hear frustration in his voice.

“The problem is, Hale women are terrible at admitting when they need help.””

I looked down.

Maybe he was right.

My entire life, I had been independent.

Strong.

Capable.

But somehow, when it came to Adrian, I had convinced myself strength meant enduring everything silently.

“What did you find?”” I asked.

Julian became serious again.

“It’s bigger than the accounts we discovered.””

My grip tightened around my phone.

“How much bigger?””

“We found a connection between Adrian’s foundation and several private investment groups.””

“That doesn’t surprise me.””

“It should.””

The seriousness in his voice made me stop.

“Why?””

“Because one of those investment groups was created before you married him.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Adrian wasn’t just hiding money from the company.””

Julian paused.

“He was preparing for this.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

Preparing?

For what?

“Explain.””

“He created backup accounts. Hidden assets. Emergency plans.””

My stomach twisted.

“Like he expected everything to collapse?””

“Yes.””

I stared at the mansion.

The place suddenly felt different.

More threatening.

“Did he know we were investigating?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

Another pause.

“Because he’s done this before.””

Those words hit me harder than I expected.

Before.

I sat down on the stone steps outside the house.

“Who?””

“We’re still investigating.””

“Julian.””

“I don’t want to tell you something without proof.””

I closed my eyes.

That was the difference between my brothers and Adrian.

Adrian wanted control.

My brothers wanted truth.

“Tell me what you know.””

Julian hesitated.

“Before you, there was another woman.””

My heart stopped.

Another woman.

Not Vanessa.

Someone before her.

“What woman?””

“Her name was Claire Bennett.””

I searched my memory.

The name sounded familiar.

“She was one of Adrian’s former business associates?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Julian’s voice became quieter.

“She disappeared from his company records.””

I stood.

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone erased her.””

The wind suddenly felt colder.

“People don’t disappear from records.””

“They do when someone powerful wants them gone.””

I looked back at the mansion.

For years, I believed Adrian’s worst betrayal was cheating.

I was wrong.

Cheating was just the easiest thing to see.

The truth underneath was much darker.

“Find her,” I said.

Julian didn’t hesitate.

“We already are.””

That night, I stayed at my parents’ house.

The same bedroom I had grown up in.

The same walls.

The same bookshelf.

But I wasn’t the same person who left years ago.

Back then, I was a woman chasing a dream.

A woman who believed love could fix anything.

Now I was someone who understood a painful truth.

Love without respect was just another form of loneliness.

My mother came into the room carrying tea.

“You’re thinking too much.””

I smiled.

“You know me too well.””

She sat beside me.

“I know my daughter.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she asked:

“Do you regret marrying him?””

The honest answer surprised me.

“No.””

My mother looked confused.

“No?””

I shook my head.

“If I say I regret it, then I’m pretending those years meant nothing.””

I looked toward the window.

“There were moments when I was happy.””

My voice became softer.

“Real moments.””

My mother reached for my hand.

“But?””

“But happiness isn’t enough when someone keeps hurting you.””

She nodded.

“You finally understand.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“That you can love someone and still choose to leave.””

The words stayed with me.

Because that was exactly what I was learning.

Leaving Adrian didn’t mean I never loved him.

It meant I finally loved myself enough.

The next morning, Marcus arrived with new information.

He placed a file on the table.

“This is about Claire Bennett.””

I opened it.

The first page contained a photograph.

A woman with dark hair and a confident smile.

She looked intelligent.

Successful.

Alive.

“What happened to her?””

Marcus sat across from me.

“Five years ago, she accused Adrian of financial misconduct.””

I looked up.

“Five years ago?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t anyone know?””

“Because she withdrew the accusation.””

“Why?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

“What?””

“We believe she was pressured.””

“By Adrian?””

“We’re investigating.””

I looked at the file again.

A woman who tried to expose Adrian before me.

A woman who failed.

Suddenly, I understood something.

Adrian didn’t just destroy people.

He convinced them nobody would believe them.

The same way he convinced me.

The same way he convinced everyone.

“Find her,” I whispered.

Marcus nodded.

“We will.””

I closed the file.

“No.””

They both looked at me.

“I will.””

Marcus frowned.

“You don’t have to do this alone.””

“I know.””

May you like

I looked at my brothers.

“For the first time in years, I know I don’t have to.””
