Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Adrian First
We found Claire Bennett three days later.
She was living in a small coastal town two hours away from the city.
Not hiding.
Not running.
Just living quietly.
That somehow made it worse.
Because it meant she had lost everything and simply disappeared from the world.
When I arrived at her house with Marcus and Julian, I expected fear.
I expected anger.
I expected someone who hated Adrian.
Instead, Claire opened the door and looked at me with tired understanding.
“You’re his wife.””
I froze.
“You know who I am?””
She gave a small smile.
“Everyone knows now.””
Her eyes moved to my cheek.
Even though the mark had faded, I knew exactly what she saw.
The evidence.
The truth.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
The words surprised me.
“Why?””
“Because I know what it feels like.””
A silence passed between us.
Then she stepped aside.
“Come in.””
Her home was simple.
Warm.
Nothing like Adrian’s mansion.
There were books everywhere.
Plants near the windows.
Photos on the walls.
A normal life.
A peaceful life.
Something Adrian never gave me.
We sat in her living room.
Marcus explained the investigation.
Claire listened quietly.
When he finished, she looked at me.
“You want to know what happened.””
“Yes.””
She nodded slowly.
“I worked for Adrian for six years.””
“What position?””
“Chief financial officer of one of his companies.””
I wasn’t surprised.
Claire didn’t seem like someone who could be easily fooled.
“I found irregular transactions.””
My stomach tightened.
“The same ones?””
“Yes.””
She looked down.
“He was moving money through fake organizations.””
“Why didn’t you expose him?””
Her expression changed.
“I tried.””
The room became quiet.
“I reported everything.””
“To whom?””
“The board.””
“And?””
She laughed bitterly.
“They fired me.””
I felt anger rise.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Claire looked at me.
“That’s exactly what Adrian counted on.””
She leaned back.
“Powerful men don’t always destroy you directly.””
Her eyes were sad.
“Sometimes they make everyone else believe you deserve what happened.””
I understood.
Because I had lived that.
“What happened after you left?””
Claire looked toward the window.
“He called me.””
“And?””
“He apologized.””
I frowned.
“Adrian apologized?””
She nodded.
“He said he was sorry. He said he made mistakes. He asked me not to ruin his life.””
My hands tightened.
“What did you do?””
“I believed him.””
A painful silence followed.
“Then I discovered he had been collecting information about me.””
“Information?””
“Personal things.””
Claire looked back at me.
“Things he could use.””
A cold realization passed through me.
“Blackmail.””
“Yes.””
The word hung in the room.
“Did he threaten you?””
“Not directly.””
She smiled sadly.
“That was Adrian’s specialty.””
“He never had to threaten.””
“He just made sure you understood what would happen.””
I looked down.
Because I knew exactly what she meant.
Fear didn’t always come from violence.
Sometimes it came from knowing someone had the power to ruin your life.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because I was ashamed.””
That word hurt.
Because I knew it.
I had felt it.
The shame of being betrayed.
The shame of staying.
The shame of admitting the person you trusted was never who you thought.
“You shouldn’t be ashamed,” I said quietly.
Claire looked surprised.
Neither of us spoke for a moment.
Then she smiled.
“You sound different than I expected.””
“What did you expect?””
“Someone broken.””
I looked at her.
“I was.””
A pause.
“But not anymore.””
Before we left, Claire gave us something.
A small envelope.
“I kept this.””
Marcus opened it carefully.
Inside were copies of documents.
Original documents.
Dates.
Signatures.
Evidence.
Julian looked stunned.
“Where did you get these?””
Claire looked at me.
“Adrian forgot something.””
“What?””
“That smart people can make mistakes.””
She pointed to the papers.
“He thought he erased everything.””
I looked at the documents.
For the first time, I felt something stronger than anger.
Hope.
Because this wasn’t just about exposing Adrian.
It was about proving every person he hurt mattered.
As we walked outside, Claire stopped me.
“Be careful.””
I turned.
“He knows you’re different now.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
Her voice became serious.
“You don’t understand.””
She looked toward the road.
“The Adrian you knew was dangerous.””
A pause.
“But the Adrian who loses everything?””
May you like
Her eyes hardened.
“That man is much worse.””
