Chapter 8: The Confession Behind Closed Doors
Adrian came to the Hale estate the next morning.
He arrived alone.
No lawyers.
No assistants.
No carefully prepared statement.
Just him.
A man who looked like he had finally run out of places to hide.
Marcus wanted to refuse entry.
I stopped him.
"I’ll talk to him.""
My brothers looked concerned.
But they trusted me.
That mattered.
I met Adrian in the library.
The same room where my father had taught me about honesty.
The irony wasn’t lost on me.
Adrian stood near the fireplace.
He looked at the paintings on the wall.
At my family.
At the life I had kept separate from him.
"I feel like I’m meeting you for the first time.""
I crossed my arms.
"Maybe you are.""
He looked down.
"I deserve that.""
"Yes.""
The answer surprised him.
Because for once, I wasn’t comforting him.
I wasn’t making things easier.
"I want to explain.""
"Explain what?""
"Everything.""
I sat down.
"Then start with the truth.""
He nodded.
A long silence followed.
Then:
"When I met you, I didn’t know who you were.""
I watched him carefully.
"I didn’t know you were a Hale.""
I believed that.
At least partly.
"Then what happened?""
His face tightened.
"Richard found out.""
Of course.
"He approached me.""
Adrian looked ashamed.
"He knew I was ambitious.""
"What did he offer?""
"Money. Connections. Investors.""
I stared at him.
"And my father?""
Adrian looked away.
"Richard told me your family was the only obstacle between him and a major opportunity.""
I felt cold.
"He wanted me to marry you.""
The words were finally spoken.
The thing I had feared.
Adrian closed his eyes.
"I told myself I wasn't doing anything wrong.""
I almost laughed.
"You told yourself marrying someone for access was acceptable?""
"No.""
His voice cracked.
"I told myself I would stop before it went too far.""
"But you didn't.""
"No.""
He looked at me.
"I fell in love with you.""
That sentence hurt.
Because I believed he believed it.
But belief didn’t erase damage.
"You loved me after you lied.""
"Yes.""
"You loved me after you built our life on a secret.""
"Yes.""
"You loved me while sleeping with Vanessa.""
His face collapsed.
"I made mistakes.""
I stood.
"No, Adrian.""
My voice was quiet.
"Mistakes are forgetting an appointment.""
I looked directly at him.
"What you did was a series of choices.""
He accepted that.
For once.
"I know.""
The honesty almost made it worse.
"Why did you stay with Vanessa?""
He looked ashamed.
"Because Richard told me he needed leverage.""
"Leverage?""
"Against you.""
My chest tightened.
"What does that mean?""
Adrian swallowed.
"He knew if I was exposed as unfaithful, your family would investigate everything.""
I stared at him.
"So the affair was part of the plan.""
"Yes.""
"And the slap?""
His face changed.
Pain.
Regret.
"I lost control.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You showed your control.""
He looked at me.
"You had years to choose me.""
Silence.
"You chose him.""
Those words broke something in him.
But they were true.
After he left, I sat alone for a long time.
Not because I wanted him back.
Because closure was strange.
Sometimes the truth didn't heal immediately.
Sometimes it simply stopped the bleeding.
That evening, Julian found something new.
A hidden account.
A payment trail.
And one name connected to everything.
Not Richard.
Not Adrian.
Someone else.
Someone we never considered.
My brothers gathered around the computer.
I stared at the screen.
A name appeared.
My heart stopped.
Because I knew it.
Everyone knew it.
A respected public figure.
Someone who had attended the gala.
Someone who had stood silently while Adrian slapped me.
Someone who had watched.
And done nothing.
The name on the screen was:
May you like
*Judge Marcus Hale.*
My brother.
