Chapter 4: The Enemy Hidden Behind the Enemy

The anonymous message remained on my phone for three hours.

I read it until the words stopped looking like words.

*You think your husband is your biggest enemy. You’re wrong.*

At first, I assumed it was a threat from Adrian.

It made sense.

A desperate man whose empire was collapsing would do anything to regain control.

But something about the message bothered me.

Adrian was many things.

Cruel.

Arrogant.

Manipulative.

But he was predictable.

He attacked directly.

He wanted people to know he was powerful.

Whoever sent this message was different.

They didn’t want attention.

They wanted fear.

And that made them more dangerous.

I sat in my father’s old study, staring at the fireplace that hadn’t been lit in years.

This room had always been my safe place.

Growing up, whenever life felt overwhelming, I came here.

The shelves were still filled with my father’s old books.

The leather chair where he used to read financial reports.

The wooden desk where he taught my brothers and me about honesty.

My father had always said one thing:

"Money reveals who people truly are.""

I never understood what he meant when I was younger.

I understood now.

Adrian didn’t become a monster because he gained money.

Money simply removed the mask.

The door opened.

Marcus walked in.

He immediately noticed my expression.

"What happened?""

I handed him my phone.

He read the message once.

Then again.

His face became serious.

"Did Adrian send this?""

"I don't know.""

Marcus handed the phone back.

"We need to assume everyone connected to him is a possibility.""

A few minutes later, Julian joined us.

Unlike Marcus, who remained calm even under pressure, Julian looked angry.

Not emotional anger.

Controlled anger.

The kind that made people nervous.

"I traced the number.""

I looked at him.

"And?""

"Blocked. Encrypted. Whoever sent it knows what they’re doing.""

Caleb entered behind him.

"And whoever it is knew exactly when to send it.""

We all looked at him.

He continued.

"Not after the gala. Not before the investigation started.""

His eyes narrowed.

"Right after Emma learned about Adrian’s backup plan.""

The room went quiet.

Because that meant one thing.

Someone had access to information they shouldn’t have.

Someone close.

I stood.

"Could it be someone inside the company?""

Julian nodded.

"Possible.""

"Could it be Vanessa?""

Marcus shook his head.

"Unlikely.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because Vanessa is reckless. She wants attention. This person wants control.""

That was true.

Vanessa loved being seen.

She wanted Adrian.

She wanted his lifestyle.

She wanted everyone to know she had won.

This person wanted something else.

Something bigger.

Caleb crossed his arms.

"Emma, there’s something we haven’t discussed.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

He hesitated.

That alone scared me.

My brothers were not men who hesitated.

"Before Dad died, he had concerns about one of Adrian’s investors.""

My heart stopped.

"What investor?""

Julian looked at Marcus.

Then Marcus answered.

"A man named Richard Voss.""

The name meant nothing to me.

But the way they said it told me everything.

"Who is he?""

Julian walked to the window.

"Someone who built his fortune by destroying other people’s companies.""

"A corporate predator," Marcus added.

"He was interested in buying into Whitmore Global several years ago.""

I frowned.

"But Adrian refused.""

"At first," Julian said.

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

Julian turned around.

"It means Adrian changed his mind.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Why?""

"Because Richard offered him something.""

"What?""

Julian’s expression hardened.

"Protection.""

The room became silent.

I finally understood.

Adrian’s success had always looked suspiciously easy.

The sudden investments.

The rapid expansion.

The impossible business deals.

I had always assumed he was brilliant.

Maybe he was.

But maybe someone had been pulling strings.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Marcus looked guilty.

"Because Dad wanted us to keep you away from that world.""

I laughed quietly.

"Keep me away?""

I looked at my brothers.

"Adrian was my husband.""

None of them responded.

Because they knew.

They had protected me from danger.

But they had never protected me from choosing the wrong person.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

Everyone froze.

This time, there was a photo.

I opened it.

My blood ran cold.

It was a picture of me.

Taken yesterday.

At the gala.

Standing beneath the banner.

The moment after Adrian slapped me.

The message underneath said:

*You embarrassed the wrong man.*

Marcus immediately reached for his phone.

"Caleb.""

"I’m already tracing it.""

Julian stared at the photo.

"This isn't about Adrian anymore.""

I knew he was right.

The gala had been the beginning.

Not the end.

Someone wanted Adrian protected.

Someone wanted me afraid.

But they had made one mistake.

They underestimated the Hale family.

And they underestimated me.

The next morning, I walked into Whitmore Global Holdings for the first time in months.

The building was exactly the same.

Glass walls.

Marble floors.

Employees moving quickly.

But everything felt different.

Because I was different.

For years, I entered this building as Adrian’s wife.

Today, I entered as the woman who could take it apart.

The receptionist looked shocked.

"Mrs. Whitmore.""

I smiled politely.

"Actually, it's Ms. Hale.""

Her expression changed.

Small words.

Huge meaning.

I walked toward the elevator.

People whispered.

Everyone knew.

The news had spread.

The cheating.

The slap.

The investigation.

The collapse.

When the elevator doors opened, Adrian was waiting.

He looked exhausted.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a man who had finally realized consequences were real.

"Emma.""

I ignored the emotion in his voice.

"I’m here for my belongings.""

His face fell.

"That’s it?""

I looked at him.

"What did you expect?""

He lowered his eyes.

"I expected you to hate me.""

"I do.""

The honesty shocked him.

"But hate is easy.""

I stepped into the elevator.

"Understanding what you did is harder.""

The doors began closing.

But before they shut completely, Adrian spoke.

"Emma.""

I looked back.

"There’s something you need to know.""

I waited.

His voice dropped.

"Richard Voss isn’t coming after you because of me.""

A chill went through me.

"Then why?""

Adrian looked terrified.

"Because of your father.""

The elevator doors closed.

And for the first time since the gala...

May you like

I wondered if Adrian had been afraid of losing everything.

Or if he had been afraid of what I would discover.
